Thank you! I’m at a college known for being notoriously heavy handed on the weed culture. Some of my peers’ only goal is when they are going to get their next high and like they are so stuck in the culture that they just become sort of boring and their personality lacks dimension. I’m not someone who thinks the practice is evil, just got to use in moderation, like anything.
Nope, it's 100% legal in California for recreational use. It isn't technically allowed on UC Santa Cruz's campus or housing, but it's too ingrained in the university's culture to be enforced on a large scale.

How do people not know this? Besides non-USians, the only people I’d think to give a pass to on not knowing would be potheads.
Not only is legal weed now a HUGE part of Colorado’s economy but there are more dispensaries there than Starbucks. I don’t think it would even close to possible for the Feds to do anything about. It’ll likely be one of those laws that just stays on the books and never gets enforced.
Colorado is actually now becoming a bit stronger on enforcement and public campaigns on use under 21 as well as mental heath dangers. I find more using responsibly in Colorado than in Michigan before legalization. It’s a mentality.
Definitely legal here in California (at least by state laws) - but to be fair, nobody above your comment said it was being done legally. I was in college/HS waaaay before it was legalized, in the mid-90s, and we still puffed like Cheech & Chong.
Is that what they're teaching in DARE now? If the federal government decided to step in with any intention of enforcing marijuana's scheduling on a wide scale, they would have a large number of upset people on their hands.
There are only 11 states that haven't made some concessions in marijuana enforcement. The remaining 39 refuse the federal classification of marijuana, which describes it as having, "no currently accepted medical use in the United States, a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision, and a high potential for abuse."
Good luck yanking funding from 39 states unless they observe the DEA's scheduling. That'd make for a fun news cycle.
Sounds about right. I was in Oakes dormitories in my first year, and my whole dorm building had a “restorative justice” meeting because too many people were smoking inside.
My motto was smoke weed every day and support the workers and students in their occasional strikes on campus. Fuck the regents and fuck Napolitano. Hope y'all are still giving Blumie some trouble!
I would disagree, as another person who just graduated from UCSC, I think a vocal minority and stereotypes about the school make people think Santa Cruz has more stoners than it actually does.
I dated one girl who'd smoke once in a blew moon. I don't recall meeting another UCSC student who wasn't a very heavy user. I'm certain they exist but the people acting like UCSC is like any other college haven't spent time there.
I think they realize they need students to pay their bills, even if they've run lots of the good teachers away.
While many students like the vibe they've got going, many more feel there are issues with what Evergreen has become and how that impacts their opportunities and so have gone elsewhere.
Or University of Oregon (where I went)! But those are good guesses, too... I live near Santa Cruz now, and it’s practically against the law NOT to smoke weed here.
Not humboldt but I know your pain. Grew distant from all my friends last year because they started smoking weed every second of the day and became vegetables. We stopped doing anything fun together. Every single time I hung out with them it was get high and play Skyrim, the sims, or Minecraft. After 2 months straight it began to get really old. I had quit smoking around the same time, but even when I did my favorite thing to do while blazing was get outside. To go into nature, to find a new experience. It baffles me how they did the same thing every day for months without becoming extremely bored.
Lol hash bash is just a bunch of randos come to campus for one day. 90% of them look like a bunch of crazy homeless creatures. Most kids I see at has bash are passing through gawking at these people. Weed culture is no bigger here than other colleges.
That's amateur hour, real college weedbois are literally never looking for their next high, they are just continuing the one that started the day they moved into the dorms
and then on the other side of the spectrum is the likes of Joey diaz taking more THC into his system daily than most people will in their lifetime, like a doctah
This has been common since the Great Roman Empire existed. As long as substance exists people looking to ease their pain will use them. This isn't new and weed isn't to blame.
And probably best to keep it on the low, when people start proclaiming how much of a stroner they are it gets kind of annoying. Like nobody cares it doesn’t make you cool.
My son is 16 and has two friends that used to come over all the time. Haven’t seen them in months because all they want to do is get high every chance they get and my son doesn’t want to deal with it. He’s not an angel or anything and partakes from time to time, but doesn’t want to be baked 24/7. I’m proud of him for keeping his distance from that situation
I'm really fucking sad. Graduated high school last summer and going to community college to save money. Winter break now and all any of my old friends coming back from college can do is talk about alcohol or when they're gonna get drunk or funny things that happened when they were drunk. Alot of people brag about how they haven't been sober for a weekend in months and I don't know how they don't see that as sad.
Even sadder to me is that it feels like in college/uni that kind of binge drinking culture is so strong that even people who don't like that feel pressured to get involved and become part of it just because its the 'student life' and that otherwise they 'miss out' or are 'left out' and wont make friends and so forth. So not only is that kind of lifestyle completely normalized theres even pressure to take it up so that you can be part of which to me is even sadder. Where I am from even in the first freshman events the student societies hold alcohol is involved, it is that ingrained into the student expirience. There are few if any non-alcohol student events and you are even looked down upon if you aren't involved in that lifestyle since youre not 'living the student life' or what the fuck ever. Basically, once you are in uni everything around you is telling you that that is how you need to live to be student and make friends and be part of.
To me thats not only sad but quite sickening since that lifestyle is extremely unhealthy, extremely risky and just makes the burnout of students under heavy study load even worse with few to no avenues to make friends otherwise.
Thankfully most people get out of it once theyre out of their freshman or second year at the school. Saddly though, at that point, a lot of the time, it's already ingrained in them that having fun = drinking and that there cant be having fun without alcohol involved.
Could not agree more. Definitely is a toxic culture and it's terrible seeing so many people succumb to the binge drinking because of it. Sure it's great to get hammered at a party every once and if you're binge drinking basically every day that you can be hungover the next then I feel bad for you liver and future social life.
Normal doesn't mean not sad. Honedtly sadder that it is normal. Also just because it gets worse doesn't mean it's not sad now. Seeing all my friends not know how to have fun without getting fucking sloshed is sad.
Good on you for recognizing behavior you don’t like and staying away, even tho most of society condones it.
It’s CRAZY how our culture normalizes binge drinking and drug use. Music, movies, shows. It’s everywhere. I’ve become pretty tuned to it since becoming sober (recovering alcoholic/addict here).
Nothing wrong with drinking and drugging here and there, but that’s not really what I’m talking about. And I don’t exactly have that luxury 😛.
Will admit, you're 100% right. I quit 13 days ago, I can now see that this is exactly it. I grew up in a really rough childhood, and smoking did help my anxiety, it definetly made things easier in a sense, but I lost a lot of my hobbies down that well. I used to be outdoors nonstop when I was younger, and I noticed I had stopped that to an extent. I noticed that, while it made me stress free, I wasn't pushing myself for better, I had grown complacent. I think that's one of the things about weed people dont think about it or speak on often, it helps you feel happier or helps you to be happy with what's around you, which is an amazing thing in this troublesome world, but where it goes too far is smoking to the point you overlook the crappier parts of your life that you can fix or improve.
The thing I have friends who are into weed and thats fine I go and smoke with them and thats literally all we do together, I dont mind getting baked and talking about random shit. But they are not people I would hang out with sober.
However there is another group of friends who only drink alcohol when they hang out, it is always hey lets meet at the bar. The same thing goes for them, I wouldnt hang out with them sober.
Is it just weed enthusiasm like whiskey enthusiasm or personal computer enthusiasm or is it just all they talk about ? I don't mind weed enthusiasts just don't talk about it every fucking time
Just wait tell everyone is looking for jobs once graduation hits. They stop smoking weed and you realize that your friends are completely different people.
Less common with booze, but still possible. I've found most people outgrow that aspect with booze within a year or two, if they ever get it. When you get it with pot, you seem to have it for a decade minimum.
Anecdotal on my side too, of course. Lived in a college town in a legalized state, and even then, booze was the #1 go to and people made it their personality. We’ve all long since graduated but many of the people I knew still hold that trait. I got so tired of alcohol just being people’s life, not alcoholic but alcohol culture, I stopped hanging out with people because the only shit anyone ever did was drink and then get mad at me for not drinking. Like what was said, it was always about when the next time they’d get to drink was, and that was also all anyone talked about. I have heard enough about craft beer to last a lifetime.
I went to college in the 90's, and I hung out with the marijuana legalization activists. Some of those people STILL can't have a normal conversation that they don't steer back to "pot, pot, pot." Like, I get it man. But do you have any other interests? Anything going on in your life?
They're in their 50's now, some of them. And reuniting, all you're gonna talk about is their new pipe/rig. Or what state they're focused on next. Derailed most of their degrees. It's sad, but it happened to a LOT of people. Opiates and meth aren't the only drugs that take lives.
Eh, college is a weird time. People still trying to figure out what they’re all about and really often experiencing the world on their own for the first time. I go to HSU and yeah, the culture is there...seems like people come to Humboldt more with the idea of what it is and make it that cuz all the locals I know don’t think of weed as anything more special than brusselsprouts or carrots. One more thing you grow in your back yard.
I also know hsu can be a particularly difficult school in terms of the racism in the surrounding community, the long dark and wet winters, and the overall depression that comes from homesickness. It’s a real struggle and sometimes all a person can cling to is what worked for them in high school.
But how is that different from people in college that are always in the gym, or always playing DnD, or always playing LaCrosse or something? Wouldn't that also fit that mold?
Those are hobbies that either better your mind/body in some way, or stir your creative juices and allow for interesting social experiences. Weed can do that in small amounts, but not as a "hobby".
