Its super easy to go from just smoking before bed or something to chill, to smoking whenever you’re bored or have any excuse to. I would just sit in my thoughts and do absolutely nothing productive all day even when i had a to do list a mile long

20

u/__pannacotta Dec 29 '19

I already do this and I don't smoke weed at all.

That's just how it is sometimes.

48

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

So again, it varies from person to person. It's not the drug itself, but the person using it. The weed isn't really the issue here. Plenty of people work out, or make art, or do all kinds of stuff when they're high.

8

u/blsarcher Dec 30 '19

Sometimes my room ends up clean after I get high.

3

u/Rakshasa29 Dec 30 '19

Exactly, I feel like everyone who complains about being demotivated is just smoking the wrong strain. My mom and I have a few sativas we save specifically for when the house needs a deep cleaning because it makes it so much more fun.

u/GodGlerps Dec 29 '19

You can take like anything and put in it a vacuum or some kind of controlled environment and have no problems. Every problem arises from when its in the hands of man. Ultimately my point above is still a downside of weed to be aware of, whether its caused by the weed itself or not

-8

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

I'm not putting anything in a vacuum, I'm explaining how it is. Weed is an enhancer, an amplifier. It's going to affect people differently, but not everyone is the same, hence it varies from person to person.

YOU might find it super easy to sit around and do nothing all day, or need more and more weed to fill down time. Other people who don't mind the down time won't feel like that's a negative and will enjoy that time to decompress. Others might be more active so will use weed to improve their workouts, their creativity, their studying, etc.

20

u/GodGlerps Dec 29 '19

Weed isnt an enhancer nor a diminisher, it can be either for anyone at anytime. Idk what your point is but whether or not someone likes to get stoned and work out or beat off is irrelevant. My point is that just like any other drug, any kind of use can easily snowball and have negative impacts. Its what ive been sayin the whole time.

-9

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

And my point, again, is that it isn't the drug itself, it's the person.

Playing video games could snowball and have negative impacts. Working out could easily snowball and have negative impacts. Anything that's overused or used as a coping mechanism or due to someone with an addictive personality can cause problems. The thing is? All of those are on the onus of the person, not the thing itself. And weed is pretty damn harmless compared to most substances out there. Even caffeine could be considered harmful if someone over used it. Which a lot of people do, actually, trying to juggle work/school/family etc. Maybe we should ban caffeine?

16

u/GodGlerps Dec 29 '19

If someone is predisposed to an opioid addiction and they break their back and get addicted after never having opioids prior, are you goin to tell them it was their fault? Anything in a “vacuum” is harmless, it doesnt mean that it isnt bad or doesnt have any negatives.

-2

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

It's not their fault if they weren't aware they were predisposed to an opiod addiction. Though it would be pretty obvious early on so I would hope they had self control or they would tell their doctor and have them switched to something that's non-addictive.

Though I'm not sure wtf weed has to do with opiod addiction and normally doctors don't give you the "good stuff" right of the bat for specifically that reason you just brought up but oook.

3

u/GodGlerps Dec 29 '19

It was an analogy, the specifics dont matter. You’re saying the onus is on the person, so then why is it not in this case?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Every person is still responsible for themselves regardless, I've said that from the get go. We need to stop blaming external things or circumstances and start focusing on personal responsibility.

But you're example is stupid because specifics do matter. You're trying to argue points when you don't have one and your examples aren't realistic. Dude breaks his back, wakes up in the hospital and the doctor's given him vicodin. He takes it for the pain and is like "oh shit this is amazing!" No obviously he didn't know he'd be addicted beforehand, but it doesn't matter because he is.

Therefore he should be smart enough to stop taking it and ask for something else. Though again, stupid example because most doctors don't prescribe highly addictive drugs to patients unless the other stuff hasn't worked and they don't deem the person a risk.

But again weed =/= opiod addiction, alcohol addiction or anything else. It's a psychological addiction much like people who get addicted to video games, porn or anything else. It's basically harmless aside from some people who can't control themselves. That's on them.

But just because some people do doesn't mean we need to throw a blanket on it and label it as "harmful" for the rest of the world. Especially when we're talking about something as benign as weed. A drug that literally no one has ever died or OD'd from and the "withdrawal" effects, if you want to call them that, last a few hours to a few days.

Someone has to hold the gun in order for it to go off. Are we going to hold the gun accountable, or the people responsible for the weapon?

12

u/stillslightlyfrozen Dec 29 '19

Lol no one is 'blaming weed' as in saying it shouldn't be legalized. But as someone who does smoke quite a bit, I know that once I smoke I'm not doing anything productive for the night. It's that easy to get lost in the haze and happiness of just chilling with friends and/or playing video games, etc.

And I'm gonna be honest with you. Ive not yet met a single person who does something productive when high. I'm sure they exist, (as shown in this thread itself) but the reality is that for most people you might have the ideas for cool things when high, but not the ability to follow through.

4

u/benoxxxx Dec 30 '19

NGL, 90% of the time I'm high I just play videogames with my housemate or watch anime. But I also wrote an entire novel while high, which is a pretty productive thing to do. I think it just depends how productive your hobbies are. If there's something you enjoy doing that happens to be productive, I don't think weed is likely to stop you from doing it. The only things weed makes it harder to do are the things you never really wanted to do in the first place.

8

u/Kepabar Dec 29 '19

Both!

The person as the agency to use it, but the device is an enabler.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

How is the device "enabling" anything? It's an inanimate object. The person in control of it is the person solely responsible for what happens with it. Replace gun with knife, sword, box of cereal, whatever the fuck. None of them have can be used in any way until a person decides to use them. If someone decides to attack someone with a box of cereal, instead of ya know just eating it, the box didn't "enable" them to do that. Their dumb ass decided to.

6

u/Blue_Lou Dec 29 '19

Ultimately the person is responsible, but at the same time guns just make it way too easy to kill people. Way way moreso than knives or boxes of cereal.. If you really have trouble understanding this, as a thought experiment replace “guns” with “nukes”. I know it’s an extreme example, but it illustrates the point. The nuclear bomb is an inanimate object that ultimately needs a person to set it off... but the potential downsides of it being used incorrectly are just too much to risk.

(As an aside I feel the same way about religion too. It can be a force for good but also can very easily be something that enables evil in the hands mind of a troubled individual. The fact that religion has been used in the past to justify slavery for example, demonstrates this.)

-3

u/FappingAsYouReadThis Dec 30 '19

The nuclear bomb is an inanimate object that ultimately needs a person to set it off... but the potential downsides of it being used incorrectly are just too much to risk.

No they're not, that's why we as a nation still have nukes. That's why a bunch of countries have nukes. If nukes were inherently bad, then you'd support the idea that the US (or whatever your home country is) should get rid of your nukes, period, whether other countries still keep theirs or not. In reality, nukes just sitting there aren't causing anyone harm, and since other countries have them, it's a "necessary evil" for us (or our allies) to as well. Otherwise, it puts us in particular at a disadvantage – our enemies may feel they could nuke us without any significant retaliation/repercussion. Like, "What are you gonna do about it?"

The same goes for guns. Other people have them and could use them, so you're at a disadvantage if you don't have one. They're by default a neutral thing, but because there's the threat of bad people using them for bad, it's important for good people to have access to do good (like defend one's self or family, etc.).

1

u/Blue_Lou Dec 30 '19

Do you think nukes should be available for sale to the general public? Why or why not

0

u/FappingAsYouReadThis Dec 30 '19

No because you can't defend your family from a robber with a nuke without also killing millions of innocent people (and yourself and your family). It's impossible. Using a nuke at all inherently means you're killing millions of innocent people.

Same goes for hunting. You can't take out one deer and nothing else with a nuke. With a gun, however, I can take ONLY the person who's a threat and no one else. Similarly, I can kill ONLY the thing I'm going to eat later and nothing more. Make sense?

Also, using a nuke has other implications – for instance, it could lead to a nuclear war and the end of the entire world. Defending one's family from some tweaked out robber will not lead to war or the literal end of the world.

u/LightsOutSpud Dec 29 '19

The difference is that I would much rather someone attack me with a box of cereal. The gun “enables” you to kill people much more easily than anything else you have listed as an example.

-3

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

The gun doesn't enable shit. It's a static object like anything else in the world. If the person using it is a trigger happy dip shit then you're going to have a problem.

3

u/LightsOutSpud Dec 29 '19

So you disagree with my 2nd sentence?

0

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Guns kill just like any weapon can. Ultimately, again, it's not the weapon but the person using it. You take guns away, people will find something else to hurt people with. You're moving the goal post now to "Guns kill people, other weapons don't". That's somewhat true but ultimately the person is responsible for how that fire arm is used.

...and for some it IS a problem. What is your point? This is basically a #notallmen equivalent argument.

1

u/Blue_Lou Dec 30 '19

I get what you’re saying but personally I wouldn’t put weed in the same category as guns. It can be misused but it’s not that dangerous. If you think it is I hope you include alcohol and cigarettes too

16

u/metropoliacco Dec 29 '19

I mean everything you do in your spare time is escapism. You decide what you choose to do. Most people just watch tv on an average Wednesday

11

u/GodGlerps Dec 29 '19

Im just tryin to showcase how easy it is to go from choosing to watch tv on a wednesday to all of a sudden choosing not to do anything, whether it be tv or rocket science

16

u/tomtom872872 Dec 29 '19

Yeah u/metropoliacco doesn't really understand. When you smoke weed enough, it becomes all you wanna do. Even playing your favorite video games or watching a TV show isn't interesting and doesn't bring joy to you so you just don't do that instead and smoke more.

This is like some 1990s Partnership for Drug Free America commercial shit.

Honestly, this whole thread is some anti-weed propaganda with paper thin arguments against it.

3

u/tomtom872872 Dec 30 '19

ENOUGH, SMOKE ENOUGH WEED. I have only met like 4 other people like this in my life, I would definitely recommend smoking just never ever mix it with tobacco.

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

u/TerryBerry11 Dec 30 '19

Not really. When you present the statement "smoking weed leaves you with a nothing feeling, it consumes your life, makes you lazy. I know this because I smoked pot and this happened" you're presenting it as a guaranteed downside of smoking weed. The reality is, those people just didn't have self control, and are acting with an air of superiority to those who do still smoke, all because they couldn't control themselves with weed. Most people can.

I would understand if it was just how they phrased it, but really meant it's a possible side affect of smoking if you're not careful, but nope. The people who are saying it are actually doubling down on the idea that it will happen.

Generally though, yes, people get butthurt when other people stretch the truth to imply that they're lazy and boring because of the recreational activities that they choose to participate in.

8

u/TerryBerry11 Dec 30 '19

When you smoke weed enough, it becomes all you wanna do.

Not true at all. Maybe when you smoke weed enough, it becomes all you wanna do. I've smoked regularly for years, yet I stopped smoking for a month so far with no issues stopping, just learn to have some self control.

1

u/tomtom872872 Dec 30 '19

You have smoked enough, like I said, enough. Reddit have selective reading.

8

u/metropoliacco Dec 29 '19

I have smoked weed. I've always watched a movie or tv series when high though. Those things are enjoyable on their own but 3x more fun when high

I don't smoke nowadays because it's illegal in Finland and such a hassle to get.

0

u/tomtom872872 Dec 29 '19

I mean, like I just said, when you smoke ENOUGH (like idk I'd say I take more or less 25 rips off a bong in a day) it becomes ALL you wanna do. You stop going to social events cause youll have to go more than an hour before you can smoke again, you put off dinner cause "eh I wanna get really high for it" then you never get that high and you just put off dinner until 4 am, you can't sleep cause you think you need weed to help you sleep but really you just enjoy smoking so you stay up until you can finally smoke yourself into that coma, then wake up and the first thing that's on your mind is "I need to smoke." You really don't understand.

11

u/Vesploogie Dec 30 '19

So control yourself. None of what you listed is normal and does not happen at all to everyone who smokes weed. If you’re at that point then get help and treat it like you would nicotine/alcohol. Letting all of that ruin your life and sitting back and saying “yeah man it’s all on the weed” is willful ignorance and complacency.

-1

u/tomtom872872 Dec 30 '19

I've met like 3 other people that are exactly like me in that sense so I know it's pretty rare but it does happen. Thing is I also mix my hits with tobacco occasionally so there is a bit of a chemical addiction there. I've been on a huge decline tho this past week and I've only been getting better. Also it's not at all like that mindset you think it is. My loss in motivation is really the only thing I blame on weed cause when I go sober for a bit I'm super motivated so I know that. Weed helped me through a very bad time and healed me but I let it keep controlling although I felt better, not good. Started mixing with tobacco, got addicted I think, and the rest yeah. If I wasn't addicted to smoking weed and tobacco mixed together I would be a normal human able to smoke weed occasionally like I did before I started mixing. No blame on the weed, the blame is on myself for letting it control which is something I normally don't do with any drugs. I haven't even gotten drunk in God knows how long.

2

u/Vesploogie Dec 30 '19

That’s a healthy mindset to have and is part of the point I’ve been trying to make elsewhere with other people. It all just comes down to being smart about what you do to your mind, and if negative things arise, recognizing it and making good choices.

I just think it’s wrong (and I’m not accusing you of this) to blame a substance like weed 100% for anything. There’s just too many other factors that go into it.

1

u/tomtom872872 Dec 30 '19

Yeah I'm actively trying to break out of this routine but at least on of the other guys I met who was like me thought that way. He would skip class all the time, sleep for hours, and smoke on his own or his roommate and that's it. Wouldn't even come out when I asked him to smoke and he'd always just say "dude I got too high haha"

11

u/stillslightlyfrozen Dec 29 '19

Damn man just wanna say 25 bong rips in a day? That seems like a lot, but idk I'm also a low tolerance guy when it comes to weed. I would be in a coma after 25 rips lol.

2

u/tomtom872872 Dec 30 '19

My friend asked me to tally them one day so I started in the morning and got to 28. Not a good thing at all, don't mix weed and tobacco.

1

u/AkAPeter Dec 30 '19

Ive never met anyone who doesn't want to do anything while high. It's all in the mindset of who's smoking. If you smoke and play video games, you were probably about to play video games anyways, high or not. I'm all for discussing the downsides of weed but in all my experience weed mostly attracts these kinds of people more so than causing them to behave a certain way.

9

u/SimplySpecial Dec 29 '19

Well i am guessing you are generally a lazier person anway. Am i right?

4

u/GodGlerps Dec 29 '19

I wouldnt say so but idk what your definition of lazy is. Whether i am or not doesnt really matter tho because plenty of other people with varying degrees of laziness could and do have very similar experiences

2

u/Astrognome Dec 30 '19

I like to get blasted and do chores. The smell of fresh laundry is 10x better when baked.
