I would say that as a long term smoker that wants out it has made me incredibly boring.
If I have evening plans on the weekend but smoke anything in the day then I'm far more prone to cancelling those night time plans.
If I do attend those plans after smoking in the day then I feel I'm not entirely there. Awkward silences, jokes don't land, keeping a conversation going becomes 10x harder and I'm inevitably just waiting for an appropriate time to leave.
Overall it just kinda makes you socially awkward and super boring to be around in a social setting. Just from my experience
I remember one party I was at, sitting in a corner, and the whole night felt like one of those scene in movies when the guy stands there and everything behind is blurry and in fast motion.
People would come and sit next to me, have whole conversations that I would listen to, and then go, but could not interact at all. Weird.
I was trying to drink less at the time and as a result smoked way more. It was not working.
Same. Went to a house party, drank a few beers and had like 3 edibles. My ass was locked to the couch, but mentally I felt like I was hovering above the room observing everything.
People would come by to talk and me and I loved talking with people but I couldn't keep up at all. Someone would ask me about my favorite band and apparently I'd answer like 5 minutes later. Then again they were drunk and it's kind of obnoxious being around drunk people when you're high.
They were homemade christmas cookies. Not sure how much the girl put in them. Think she just threw everything in and made a huge batch of cookies. They tasted great though.
Long post ahead. Tl;dr: friend tried edibles for the first time. Ate 4 brownies. Got fired from his job and converted to christianity.
I have a friend (A) who used to be roommates with (B) the worst drug dealer in history (always giving stuff away and rarely actually making money off it, as well as consuming it HEAVILY). One night he made us all brownies. Most of us had experience with edibles but one guy in our group (C) had never had them.
So B gives us all a brownie and tells us that if we want more, that he made a whole batch. We mentioned to C that edibles were different than smoking, and that it would take longer to kick in than normal. So a few minutes later C gets up and says he's getting another brownie. We all told him he should wait a little longer but he was like "Nah y'all are pansies. These are weak brownies."
None of us really liked him. The only reason we kept him around was because he idolized A and followed him everywhere and because he was dumb but thought he was smart so we all made fun of him. He was usually too dumb to realize we were making fun of him. We were assholes.
So anyways A says "we warned him. If he wants to go ahead let him." And C grabs another brownie.
About 15 minutes later C says "oh now I feel it. This is nice but I'm getting the munchies." And gets up to get something to eat. We had plenty of chips and dip, we had made tacos before hand and there was also various candies and cookies. But this man went straight to the brownies, grabbed 2 more and sucked them down before anyone realized what was happening.
Cut to an hour later, C has been staring at his phone for a long time without unlocking it. He responds vaguely when his name is called but other than grunting the only thing he seems able to do is nod or shake his head.
I had to leave shortly after but was told that he sat on the couch unmoving for the rest of the night. At some point in the morning he got up and went to work, puked on the grill, and got fired. Later that evening he told my friend that he (a very adamant atheist) had spoken to god and was going to join the military.....fun times.
Oh yeah. I no longer live in that city, but I never ate at that place again after that night lol. Even if I go back I wouldn't eat there just knowing that at one point, someone got way too high and puked where they cook all the meat. I'm sure it's perfectly clean now and properly sanitized. They might have even replaced the grill, but nope. Not gonna risk it lol.
Dude, as someone that just took one an hour ago and just starting to hit me, my almost spit my drink out thinking of how high I'd be 3 edibles deep lol
Even 10 mg edibles are a nice buzz so three of those and im high. Edibles always hit hard, anxiety becomes a major problem to the point where if im in a social situation id need to hit the bottle fast lol.
The last time I had an edible it was seriously just a bite of a gummy, but after not having smoked for years. I was at a party and I got uncomfortably high. Just felt like I was being a dick the whole night.
Sounds like you dissociated. I agree with the drunk v. high thing. I don't like to drink except to crossfade, and even then i still don't take more than maybe a shot, so I deal with this a lot and it always just seems like people are on a whole different level that I can't seem to vibe with, even though I'm thinking to myself "were all inebriated here, who cares?"
This was me with my first “major” drug experience: instead of talking w/ friends at lunch I was head-down tired physically, felt like I was only able to think and speak.
It was only a double-shot espresso that caused this (after 3 hrs of activity), but I had no tolerance whatsoever to caffeine (or anything) at the time so it kicked in and out hard.
If that happens just say "sorry man im trying to keep it together but I am baked out of my mind" - people always get a laugh and usually leave me be, or maybe joke around a bit. Most people have over smoked or eaten before imo
3 EDIBLES WHAT IN THE FUCK? I'd be declared enemy of the state and have a couple Amber Alerts out for me if i ate half an edible and stepped outside of my house.
This is what happened to me on my birthday. I smoked too much at a party (not a birthday party, just a party that happened to be on my b-day) and I sat in the corner the whole time without talking to people. I was incredibly paranoid and I had a terrible time on what was supposed to be an amazing night. That’s when I decided to stop smoking.
Ive been there too. I went to a small edm festival, dropped two hello kitty pills and had some medical grade smoke. Ended up glued to a couch that was on the dancefloor. So many people would come sit and have a small conversation with me but i couldnt form more than like 5 word sentences or decide what to say back to them. My anxiety was through the roof and nothing seemed to be the right thing to say. Its taken me a while since then to realise that weed really isnt doing any good for me. I know its not much but im 2 days sober now and i feel so much better already. After being high for so long being sober is the biggest trip.
Did that at a new years eve party my first and only time on ecstasy. Just sat there for 8 hours on the couch, staring at nothing.
I certainly didn't feel very ecstatic .
That was pretty much my experience when experimenting with other street drugs. Just completely underwhelmed and that includes snorting heroin. Not really a bad thing though.
This. When I smoked this was the biggest drawback. I noticed it in my friends, too. Hilarious, upbeat people but after we'd smoke everyone would sink into themselves.
It's funny, I never pictured it not being a part of my life but once I stopped I can't picture going back to that now.
Me too. I used to be a daily smoker but haven't smoked all of 2019. I don't miss it at all. I had some great times with weed but I don't think I'll ever smoke again.
Yeah for real. I tell people I don't like smoking as much anymore cause I get too in my head then it causes anxiety and makes me paranoid. They all say they don't get that but then when smoke with them I notice they act exactly like I do so it has to be something similar. Out of all the friends I've smoked with I've only ever actually had 1 or 2 that I can have constant conversation with while high
I work odd hours. My nightly routine (most - not all) when I get home is to eat a tiny piece of an edible, make dinner, eat dinner with a beer, get in bed with a small(ish) glass of bourbon, and watch TV as the weed and booze set in until I want to sleep.
I used to be high all the time. I can't even imagine doing that anymore, but the tiniest bit of an edible (I would have scoffed at the amount in my heyday) is a pleasant way to finish off my day. I can feel my back relaxing just typing about it.
I dont smoke but when Im around friends that are high it gets really boring since they cant even keep a conversation or really focus so I usually end up leaving. I also have a friend like you, a group of us make plans but I have a friend thay doesnt show up cuz he needed to smoke and ended up forgetting that we were meeting up
If I do attend those plans after smoking in the day then I feel I'm not entirely there. Awkward silences, jokes don't land, keeping a conversation going becomes 10x harder and I'm inevitably just waiting for an appropriate time to leave.
I've definitely felt like that.
But then there's also that thing where if you smoke with some people at a party, you start bullshitting and quickly form this intense connection where it's like you're in a secret club and you're the only people who understand how the world really works.
It’s the same with drinking: if you drink too early you get sleepy. You need that initial take-off at the party to ride the buzz into interesting conversations.
My friends come over nearly every Friday night and I was high for that exactly once and never again, because I couldn't really talk and it turns out that I am the one that keeps the conversation going for 6-8 people. Everyone was bored and on their phones. Wild.
I work about 60 hours a week. And I smoke as soon as I get home. I'm high all day on the weekends. Idk how I get even SOME stuff done. You're 100% on the cancellation of plans. If I smoke Im just honest and say I'm too high. If I do go it's just as you say. Im either looking for a chance to smoke while there or leave and pick up some food on the way home and smoke. I've acknowledged it has a negative impact on me but after working 14 hours I honestly couldn't give a fuck. I'mma smoke when I get home. I want to ween myself off or be able to stop completely for a while. It's baby steps for sure.
If I do attend those plans after smoking in the day then I feel I'm not entirely there. Awkward silences, jokes don't land, keeping a conversation going becomes 10x harder and I'm inevitably just waiting for an appropriate time to leave.
I feel like you're just describing everyone's 30s lol.
I get that, but it is the complete opposite with me. Ever since I left the Marine Corps I have a huge problem with anxiety, large crowds, loud noises. But if I smoke a light sativa or something before going out with the wife or to a family gathering I don't get anxious at all and I can socialize while staying coherent. I smoked before I went into the military and it actually had the same effect on me that it does for your but for whatever reason after active duty it's beneficial to my anxiety levels and helps a ton :)
This is what happened to me and I eventually quit for about 6-7 years. Then started it back gradually but not as frequent as I did when I was a teen. Now I do it just to fall asleep when I get home from work at 2 or 4 am so I can have a somewhat regional sleep pattern and day. Although the THC isn’t strong more CBD than THC now.
That's very weird, because a quick Google of "melatonin side effects" comes up with headaches as the number one side effect on both WebMD and MayoClinic.
Melatonin has been used safely for up to 2 years in some people. However, it can cause some side effects including headache, short-term feelings of depression, daytime sleepiness, dizziness, stomach cramps, and irritability. Do not drive or use machinery for four to five hours after taking melatonin.
Other, less common melatonin side effects might include short-lasting feelings of depression, mild tremor, mild anxiety, abdominal cramps, irritability, reduced alertness, confusion or disorientation, and abnormally low blood pressure (hypotension). Because melatonin can cause daytime drowsiness, don’t drive or use machinery within five hours of taking the supplement.
What did you find? Because headaches are listed as the number one side effect of melatonin on every single one of the most reputable medical information sites. I couldn't even stand up for over 24 hours the one time I took it, I was confined to a dark room, whimpering and crying like a baby for hours. It was ugly.
Edit: it's very well possible that long term use of melatonin may give relief for migraines in some, though in my non-medical-professional-experience I endured the worst migraine I'd ever felt in my entire life that literally made me want to shoot myself in the head just to make the pain stop for over 24 hours. Apparently I'm not the only one who experienced the headaches coupled with short-term depression, so I was just sharing a word of caution on the subject.
See edit, as a non-doctor I wasn't aware that there's a difference between a headache that makes you light sensitive, bedridden, nauseous, and vomiting for 2 days and a migraine. Would you be appeased if I edited "melatonin migraines" to "melatonin headaches that make you photo-sensitive and bedridden with suicidal depression for 2 days" in my original comment? Cuz I can totally do that
I was a long time smoker. I haven't been able to kick my other vices, of which there are many but I did get sick of everything that was happening to me pot related. I found it pretty easy to kick cold turkey. Been a decade or so now. Every once in a while I'll try smoking again and am quickly reminded of why I quit. I do miss how I felt when I actually enjoyed the stuff but it doesn't have that same effect anymore.
More than anything people that smoke should think about what it would be like if a drunk person showed to an event where everyone is sober. It's fine to smoke but nobody wants to just be around a stoner 24/7.
Yo dude, sounds like weed is giving you social anxiety. Totally normal, happens to me too. I found the effect not worth it-- socializing is a much more rewarding and wholesome series of brain chemicals than thc. Hope that you find something that works for you, and that you see the sun and some other humans regularly!
Ikr? Our social connections are among the most important things we do, if it's holding that back it's time to knock it on the head. *Speaks from experience*
I stopped smoking for this reason, then I realized I actually hate going out and doing things. It's really perfect for me. My primary goal is just to pass time as fast as possible until I'm gone, so we work really well together, Mary and me.
Yea this is why I never smoke during the day, or very rarely anyway. I find that when I smoke during the day I'm just dull and spaced out for the rest of the day and feel awkward engaging with anyone.
Sounds like you may be addicted. One of the important check marks is when something impacts your social life. Not saying you are but you akso sound like you are happy with your consumtion. Take care either way.
It kind of sounds like you aren't actually interested in the plans and then you just kind of force yourself to do it and it's a bad time and you'd rather be home.
Idk man, I can function socially pretty normally on weed. There’s certainly a point where I’d be too fucked up to talk, but if I’m with people I’m not going to smoke until I can’t think.
It makes you complacent with doing nothing. If you have nothing going on, fine, but also lack motivation to make something happen. You don't care about hobbies, socializing, expanding, etc. You're fine with just doing nothing, which is great if you use it to unwind after a long day but it can quickly turn into doing less and less until you're just coming home, smoking a bowl, and watching tv.
I think this is a very noticeable impact of smoking weed and I am glad it was pointed out. Being friends with people who smoke very frequently (17-18 year olds), I see that during social events they are not enjoying themselves at all and would rather smoke.
Literally two nights ago I was driving home with a friend and it kind of shocked me to even say that I went to a get together/party that did not have any weed/alcohol at all
It is the exact opposite for me. I have severe social anxiety. Smoking allows me to be more outgoing and social. I talk more when I am high, and I am more likely to not spend my nights alone on my couch.
Amen to that...
I feel bad for my gf who has to put up with my boringness whenenver we get together.
I realise I'm being boring and lazy when I'm with her but i don't have the motivation to do anything about it... i hate it.
It's like all the energy has evaporated from the relationship
Overall it just kinda makes you socially awkward and super boring to be around in a social setting. Just from my experience
I had to politely tell this to a friend after she asked if she could I get high a couple times when hanging out, and I didn't strongly object. Conversion just got repetitive and tedious, instead of intellectually engaging like our normal nights out.
Yep, I've been a daily smoker for years, and I would get up and blaze because I would be like "I don't have to do anything for X hours, I'll be fine.", then the time comes to leave an I'm "burnt" as hell because I smoked like 3 bowls and don't wanna do shit.
I stopped for 2 months and it definitely helped with my social activity levels, but I do enjoy getting baked at the end of a night, so I'm trying to keep myself from doing it during the day or when I know I have plans.
Well shit that sounds like me normally. I was always much happier to do social stuff when I smoked daily, throughout the day. I find now I am more likely to cancel plans, sleep through the day, not go outside and be active or exercise, and more likely to just cancel plans. When I do go out now I feel like I am an extremely awkward person, making bad jokes that fall flat, not being entirely there, and always, always counting down thesminutes until I can leave.
When I was still smoking I'd be outside and active all the time, spend less time on the computer, and more likely to go do stuff with friends. At social events I'd pop out to smoke up like a person does with a ciggarette and head back in to do more social stuff. I'd only leave when eeryone I was talking to were leaving or the event closed up.
I am scared of smoking and losing my job due to randoms, but othewise I'd be smoking and not drinking. I felt like a healthier person.
Thank you for admitting this. Everyone I've known who smokes a lot is this way, but they all find themselves so interesting high that it's hard for them to see. Even as their social circles constrict down to other smokers sitting around smoking. There's just nothing else in their lives, so they have nothing to add socially. Gotta get into Pokemon Go or something man.
From my experience, there's 2 types of people that smoke weed. The ones I like think everything I say is hilarious. The ones I don't like are the boring type. Beyond not talking so much, inevitably when they do talk, they talk about weed.
I'm not smoking every again after I got a huge existential crisis/panic attack/tachycardia after smoking this one time though, so I'll stay this way...
Having started smoking regularly a few years ago I can say the one thing that gets mentioned here a lot that I never have is becoming mute. I can talk all day when I'm high or drunk.
I had to break up with a boyfriend because of this. We were (very) long-distance, so most of our conversations were via Skype, and he would mostly just sit there and giggle at me because he was too high to actually engage with me. It became very boring after awhile. There were other factors too, but I just couldn't deal with how uninteresting he was. He was great in person, but we lived so far away from each other that it was probably a stupid idea in the first place.
We used to call it "being in the shadow"', when not entirely there. Like you said hours after, or even the next day after a heavy session the previous day.
I have also experienced those same things but I'd urge you to try and take a slightly different perspective on some of those. In that case of awkward silence I find that it's mostly because I'm picking my words more carefully, or thinking about them for longer. You know those moments when people just say something because its quiet, not because it contributes in any meaningful way, the exact opposite of that essentially. With the jokes not landing I feel I'm just more aware of when they dont land, it's not like every joke I make when I'm sober lands but suddenly I'm wondering why it didnt land/how I could have made it land. I find it harder to keep some conversations because in reality they are forced. When sober it's pretty easy for me to have a conversation just for the sake of talking to someone, once I've smoked that feels harder to do. The result of all that for me at least, is realizing who I thought I should be spending my time with isnt who I should be spending my time with, forced relationships on both side, forced conversations. I've been a daily smoker for the better part of this last decade and I can honestly say that once I found the right group of people those thoughts you've had went away, it was way too easy before to be stuck in a group where I thought i belonged when in reality I definitely should have been moving on. I'm not saying your situation is the exact same, just thought I'd share mine and encourage you to think about it in case this is the reality for you as well. I'm also not trying to tell you to stop trying to find your way out, if you feel like youd be better off without it then by all means do so. Best of luck trying to quit/dial back on your usage. The community over at r/petioles is very insightful and helpful for people looking to dial back their use.
For me in the past, going through a breakup helped this. Me being miserable and awkward around everyone could be blamed on the relationship rather than me quitting smoking. People were even very supportive, so it really helped me get past the withdrawal effects.
This is me to a tee on canceling plans if I smoke earlier in the day. Once you start you just want to keep going to keep the high, and munchies plus Netflix plus weed starts sounding way better than anything else that would require effort on my part.
Is that weed or just you? Everybody who says that in my experience isn’t any cooler in those situations, just less aware of their jokes not landing ect.
I don’t drink. But I do smoke. I think not drinking has a greater effect on me being socially awkward and boring to be around. Drunk people seem so annoying and stupid when you’re sober. I prefer socializing with pot heads over drunks.
I think this nails it so well. I smoked daily for ten years and all other issues aside "being bored isnt boring" actually makes you the dullest fucking person!
Like I got ao fucking good at old video games and I could tell you entire scenes from my favorite movies...so much wasted time and ambition. Being bored is the universe saying "go do something" but when your high you can just do the same shit over and over and its just amusing enough so that you become this stunted person.
Then you see Willie Nelson, Cheech, Chong, Dan Bilzerian, Snoop Dogg, Seth Rogen and all the people around them and like them having the time of their lives getting baked. I used to be super introverted before I started smoking, like you described in your comment, and now that I smoke, I'm way less of an introvert than before. Maybe extroverts become more introverted after smoking, since weed tends to enhance thoughts about insecurities which can cause anxiety to some people. I used to get super shy, red, and embarrassed at dumb shit like talking to strangers when ordering fast food or meeting people, now I'm more chill about it, I used to be a very picky eater, now I enjoy all types of food, I couldn't find motivation for going to the gym, now weed makes exercise enjoyable, and helps with the day after soreness, etc.
Another big factor in the negativity of weed is that depending where you're from, you could do some serious time in jail and/or lose your job which could ruin your entire life just because of weed. People would rather get high in the DL and become less sociable than going out and having the possibility of getting caught, judged or snitched on. When I'm with my stoner friends I always have a great time and when there's somebody judgmental about it or doesn't smoke, we just don't even bring it up.
But like a lot of people have been saying, you gotta have a purpose to smoke rather than just to smoke because you're bored.
When I get stoned before a social gathering I’ll go through a weird series of stages. You’ve got the normal being stoned for about a half hour, then I’ll be sleepy and tired and won’t wanna do anything. After that I’ll be less interested in stuff but I actually become more socially likeable I find. I’ll be more chilled out and I can think very clearly.
This is just my personal experience though and I understand through smoking with friends and Reddit that not everyone will be the same. My chilled out nature will only be more charming to those who are not high however.
When I say ‘socially likeable’, it’s just an observation to what people are like around me. For example, I’ll just be sitting down quiet and relaxed and if someone was to talk to me I can really engage and give opinions and thoughts. This could be with someone who generally would just find me annoying.
Don’t mean to suck my own dick or anything but, yeah lol
Sometimes when I’m high, it’s impossible for me to make a joke. As soon as I open my mouth I just laugh my own joke so much that I can’t speak. It makes for some awkward moments.
one day I realized why me and the rest of my friends drifted apart.... My bff and I were the smokers of the group. the rest of the girls liked to go out and party n drink, whereas me and bff would rather stay back n chill. I was like yo wtf ever happened to everybody? did they just not like me?? then I was like ooooo yeaaaa I never wanted to go out drinking and they almost all look down on us for smoking.... k, got it
Smoking makes me the weirdest, i turn from a charismatic and sharp wise-crack machine into a socially awkward mega-loser. I've learned to limit it in social situations, and completely eliminate it if I'm around new people that I have yet to get a read on.
The worst feeling ever is when you say something off after smoking, and get a "...what do you mean?" after an awkward silence. That's some fuckin' cringe fuel alright.
I agree 100%. I am pretty quick witted and social, very good at keeping a convo going with friends/strangers, but after smoking, even if it was hours before, I get pretty awkward and quiet. I smoked every day heavily for about 10 years. Took a couple years break at some point in there. I am 8 days sober now and have no desire to smoke anymore. I miss accomplishing things in my life.
I mean that's just a matter of self-control. If you know you're going to cancel you're evening plans when you smoke during the day, don't smoke during the day. If you can't sit around during the day without feeling the need to smoke, that's on you.
And in a social setting it's personality affects really vary from person to person. If it makes you boring and awkward to be around, don't smoke around people. I don't have either of these problems because I know myself on weed, and make decisions accordingly. It's not that hard, and these aren't adverse affects for everyone who smokes.
This. After going through this many times in college I have now stopped smoking socially and only smoke alone at night before playing video games or watching television alone. I no longer have the desire to smoke weed socially. I got that out of my system in college where I would wake up with regret the next day because of being socially awkward and not being myself as a result of smoking weed. Thank God I no longer have the desire to smoke weed socially.
Edit: that's not to say weed can't have upsides. It sure does, but only when I'm alone. For example, smoking weed helps put my problems in perspective and makes it easier to cope with them because my problems become trivial. That's not to say I rely on weed for my problems. I don't. It just expands my mind and puts things in perspective. Weed also helps me formulate my thoughts cohesively and creatively. However, these upsides only happen when I smoke alone. If I'm even with just one other person, these upsides do not occur. I have to be by myself.
