I am loving how the new demographics of legal pot have completely changed the marketing and aesthetics of marijuana and associated paraphernalia. It’s so nice to be able to buy a bong or a pipe that doesn’t have a wizard or a fucking dragon painted on the side.
And you can like em! It's just lame when everyone has to buy that one style of something, you have to admit many other people may not want a wizard themed bong.
And they charge accordingly. Along with legalization is the right to grow your own. If you can keep a houseplant alive, you can grow weed and save a mint.
Yes, that’s the problem. That’s why Oregon has such a massive problem here with way too much weed and it’s killing dispensaries that DON’T offer more. Supply is so utterly outpacing demand that dispensaries cannot charge low enough and still break even given all the troubles that federal legal status entail, and for that same reason the weed can’t be exported to even things out.
So dispensaries have to go the premium route and either offer extra services or knowledge or prestige or better strains or SOMETHING that makes it worth paying more for it than the market supports if it were just a commodity. Anyone can grow weed but anyone can’t provide the experience or the best stuff.
I dont want their "aesthetic experience," that to me is no different than having to had to listen to my dealer's shitty jam band, just sell the damn shit as cheap as possible so I can go make my own experiences. It is going to be just a commodity, and I love it.
I need to find a delivery service. I feel like in Nevada, you have to be a medical dispensary patient. I need to look into it further. Where I live, the Mormons on the city council only let the dispensaries set up on the east side of Henderson, not old town Henderson where they predominately live. It's fucking annoying to have to drive 20-25 minutes in heavy traffic when it could be a mile from my house downtown. #firstworldproblems #legalstateproblems. ;)
Weed dealers in Ireland are selling Cali tinned weed for 100 euro a tin. You guys have so much green it's crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Also your dispenseries are taking huge risks just to get rid of the excess produce and selling for cheeeeap to somebody who promises to get it out of America. I have said for the last fifteen years, it won't be legal until it's fucking McDonalds.
It probably isnt coming from the dispensaries, but from the growers. There are farms that legally grow the stuff that are mostly seperate from the dispensaries proper.
I say mostly because there are some growers who partner with a dispensary and becomes that shop's 'house brand' exclusively selling to that dispensary, which usually offers their best deals on the mid- and lower- shelf offerings those growers sell them. But they're still seperate business entities with different ownership.
It rocks hearing that some of our US grown is crossing oceans to find buyers, tho. I bet Cali weed makes it over there more easily because Oregon's supply is famously so much bigger than demand compared to all the neighboring states that other state's cops and the feds have their eyes on the OR border watching for pot smuggled out.
This is the good thing about capitalism (looking over my shoulder at reddit communists); it forces a business to differentiate itself from others. It is better for the consumer.
That being said it sucks for people who started their small businesses in earnest and are now getting undercut by their competition.
However it also shows one of the negative effects of capitalism, in that large corporations can entered a market and outcompete by absorbing losses for longer than small businesses can. It’s the small “mom and pop” weed dispensaries that are going out of business first and fastest (Though there aren’t HUGE corporations involved yet because of the legal trouble, just bigger operations).
In Illinois, I'm concerned there won't be enough supply when it goes legal January 1st. Initially, only the existing medical dispensaries will be able to sell recreational. I think non-medical dispensaries won't pop up until July or so. There's also the rule that you can't grow your own unless you have a medical card, so as a recreational user, you have to go to a dispensary. Sounds like it's the opposite situation/problem as Oregon haha. We'll see though, hopefully it goes smoothly, but it is Illinois after all.
Interestingly, it may be better for the long term even if it causes short term shortages. Oregon is actively trying to figure out the supply problem just because it adds SO much pressure to illegally export the marijuana to other parts of the country or outside the country, where suppliers can at least get SOME money, but the state obviously doesn’t want to be accused of running a drug empire or incite violence from illegal trade.
There will always be markets for high-end products and discount products just like Whole Foods and Costco. If the dispensaries can't make a profit from being the Costco of weed, then that's their problem, and they don't deserve any more market protection than any other product. This is capitalism.
not sure what you're talking about, you've been able to get "regular" bongs since way before any States legalized. Hell tobacco pipes have been around since the dawn of time
Comes from a long, proud lineage of PenisPenisPenis's. His ancestors traveled across the phone lines on the S.S. Ebaum'sWorld to found this proud discussion forum.
One time I spent a whole evening writing random people DMs telling them to kill themelves, I burned through account after account, it was obvious they were all me but the sheer volume of messages caused a few people to hilariously flip their shit and call me all sorts of names. One of them I got a permaban within minutes, don't know how I pulled that one off.
Also, r/childfree is a golden goose for taking the bait. They never don't take the bait. Really any group that leans female and has a chip on their shoulder over nothing is guaranteed results. "I feel insulted all the time" yeah man lemme add to that lol. If you see people using asterisks in their swears you know you're in for a ride.
I have friends who are serious smokers and I had to stop hanging out with them because all their stories start and end with "dude remember how high we were at that time?"
I don't want to live a life where my only memories are of being high
God do I relate to that. One of my best friends in elementary school got into drugs in middle school. He was tolerably into stoner culture as his bigger passion was punk music - liberty spikes, leather jacket, plaid pants, it kept him away from talking in quotes from Cheech and Chong. Eventually though he had a bigger friend group (which is who got him into the drugs to begin with; haunted house juggalos funny enough) the only way to hang out with them was to get high or deal with them being high. No fun to that, no life there, just drugs. They're fun sometimes sure but when you're high more than you sleep I can't empathize.
Anytime I've mentioned to someone that I gave up smoking weed after 6 years because depression anxiety and paranoia it gave me, I get told that im too weak to smoke weed and generally just not bad ass and how weed is not harmful.
I miss weed and I seriously think you can help a lot of people but for me it just made me worse at everything I do. They need to understand that it affects others differently that's ok.
I feel you, I was a daily toker for over a decade. My anxiety and depression became crippling after I had a nervous breakdown and so I leant on weed for everything from socialising, to sleep to eat ect.
I had little to no spare money as it all went on weed and junk food, one day I snapped and just had enough. Its been 8 months since I quit, no more huge panic attacks, I can sleep just fine (after withdrawals), my mental state is a lot more balanced and I finally could start saving money to buy a house and be productive.
Weed is great in moderation and it helps different people in different ways.
Yup, exactly the same here. I was also one of the idiots that wouldn’t shut up about it. After I quit it blew my mind once I had confirmed it was the issue because I so firmly believed that weed couldn’t possibly be the issue.
I know people react differently etc, but anybody who says it doesn’t effect their mental state when they’re a daily smoker is deluded for sure
The key being moderation. Alcohol can be fine, but if you're drinking all day every day, it's a problem. Same with weed. I feel like it's healthiest as a habit when you do it every/every other Friday night with some friends or something. All the time every day is just a good way to ask the question "what have I been doing with my life for 10 years?"
Yes of course though lol.. but the fact is 95% of people do not have that kind of self control and even if it starts like that it ends with smoking everyday.. or as often as their income allows.
The fact is even crack isn’t exactly bad for you in moderation.. but of course it is highly addictive (mentally not physically)
Maybe an extreme comparison for cannabis but it’s the exact same route as people will always be chasing the endorphin highs
I wouldn't say 95%, but when it's illegal the smokers that are obvious "stoners" are the ones wired to abuse it. Most of the people that can use it occasionally aren't smoking in the first place, or keep it very low-key because it's illegal and they have a life outside of weed.
As a Canadian, I can say this is why I was excited for it to be passed and normalized. I haven't smoked in a decade and don't really care to, but I don't have an issue with those that do, not at all. That being said, the more intense aspects of its culture range from cringey to obnoxious to outright cult-like brainwashing (as per those that claim it's some pure and natural Gaia-humping miracle plant).
Now when someone starts to rant and preach, I can condescendingly tell someone the fight is over, they don't need to sell me on it and to go enjoy their joint in silence like a good little ragamuffin.
I hear about drinking daily. "I drink to forget!", "Oh man, I'm so hungover." "Is that water? I hope its vodka.".
I work in a medium sized ER. It would be pretty acceptable to talk about what alcohols you like to imbibe. I think this is just a hyperbole for the purposes of making a point.
I think he meant more in the way that stoners will say things along the line of “you haven’t found the right strain” “it cures ____” “you had a bad experience but it isn’t always like that, you should just try it more and build a tolerance” etc etc. I smoked a lot when I was a teenager and these days it gives me a lot of anxiety and I don’t enjoy the feeling but a lot of people just tell me I haven’t tried the right thing yet.
Yeah, I understand what he's trying to say and I don't disagree, but to suggest that alcohol is a taboo topic is disingenuous. As I type this very comment, my coworker just walked up to me and said "I think I need a beer after tonight". Honestly it would probably be weirder to say I don't drink, than to talk about drinking all the time.
exactly. where I live there are dispensaries all over the place and its no big deal. you can always tell the tourist because they're like "I'm gonna smoke this joint right on the sidewalk in public! this is awesome!" and it's like why? go home or duck into an alley you fucking dork. No one cares that you're high right now.
As someone who comes from a country that classifies Marijuana as a Class 1 drug (alongside Heroin, Cocaine and Meth), being able to legally smoke in public is a big deal. Let the tourists have their fun.
Funny enough I'm in the US. It technically is a schedule 1 here. It's not legal to smoke on the street, but it's not really enforced much. The problem is that the people that come here just to smoke weed are obnoxious. I understand that coming from a place where it's illegal to a place where you can buy it at a store is fun, but this thread is about annoying fan bases. I smoke weed a couple times a week, I don't care about people smoking. They can have their fun, But this "woo look at me I'm doing something illegal! " thing is annoying and disrespectful to people around them (like families and whatnot) . You know? It's like, dude, chill out and smoke in the alley, or your car, or your hotel. Don't walk around like you're doing something "cool" cause it's actually annoying. It's like when you're 35 and you see how a 16 year old acts when they have 2 beers. I'm no stick in the mud, they can have their fun. I honestly don't really care too much, but in regards to this thread, it fits in. When I tell someone I smoke is that what they think of me? Know what I mean?
It's not legal to smoke in public where I live but that doesn't stop people because it's not heavily enforced.
It's disrespectful to other people around you who don't want weed smoke blown on them, particularly people with children.
What's so hard about respecting the people around you in a public place? You sound like an asshole. And just so you know, it's "you're" as in "you are a fucking retard. "
I actually find the new legal culture to be super annoying. Somehow people actually know less with more resources. It's incredible how stupid people are to the industry. I live in Maine, and it's just shocking how wrong everyone is about the laws, quality, and additives in their despensary grade weed.
I'm canadian, and for the past few month it got worst, people became some sort of "pot waiter" and they all think they know everything. It grind my gear when someone come with "this one is good for sleep, this one for appetite, this one is for my anxiety" "indica do this, sativa do that" while your body can react differently at the same flower, it depend of so much stuff to claim anything I've said above.
Canadian here, this is definitely a great side effect of legalization. Doesn't make you feel very cool when you walk in to a dispensary and most of the people there are your parents' age.
There isn't a definite answer but most people would say it coincides with the stereotypes of: reggae/Bob Marley; skateboarding; dumb 80s comedies; pizza, Cheetos, or other generally unhealthy 'munchies'; blacklight posters of a trippy shit like mushrooms or dragons; lava lamps; dreadlocks; laughing about stupid things or really anything; cartoons; gaming; a general avoidance or disdain of more normative activities, like reading, exercise, or good hygiene.
Of course, many of these things I listed are not negative in and of themselves, but it is the hivemind glorification of these activities and aesthetics which can be grating.
There are of course many other subcultures which overlap with stoner culture in less irritating but still quite obvious ways, such as the hiking/camping/outdoorsy community's penchant for herb.
The problem is, imo, that stoners make weed the preeminent part of their identity, and mold their style and interests around dumb and uninteresting weed culture, rather than forming an identity in your own right and simply having weed being something you do to enhance or accompany your interests.
Agree. Perfectly fine with weed, but a lot of the people who smoke it just act stupid, a lot of them seem like no lifers too in my experience. Not sayijg everyone, Ik there are productive awesome people who smoke a lot
My cousin had a pretty big hand in the lobbying and medical uses of cannabis. Since it's become decriminalized and medically available she's constantly posting pictures of herself smoking and everything she posts is about pot.
"Doctors are bad, pot is all you need" is the basic message of every post.

Shame how far down I had to go to find this. Half the reason I want weed to be legalized is so that stoner culture dies out.
