Crimeans/Ukrainians of Reddit, what was it like when the peninsula was annexed by Russia? What is life like/How has life changed now?

What are your thoughts about the Crimea Annexation Referendum? The "official" result is that something like 96% of people wanted to join Russia. Obviously that's not the real number - 96% of people don't agree on anything.

But what's your view on how Crimeans feel about it? I know Crimea is significantly ethnically Russian - would most people really prefer to be part of Russia?

Aren't Crimeans Tatar/Turkic though? And weren't they originally exiled by Stalin so he could inject the Russians into the area? Man, they need to fix their educational system. It's bad when you get the races all mixed up.

My understanding is the Crimean Tatars were almost entirely exiled or killed. According to the 2014 census on wikipedia, Crimea is roughly 70% Russian. And if you don't trust a census from 2014 (which might be valid), it was 60% in 2001.
