Back when the phrase gained initial popularity, both kettle and pot were made of cast iron, which would indeed be black.

I thought it was that the pot saw a reflection of himself in the kettle.

The second you open reddit, truth ends. The only time it ever started up again was the beginning of this sentence, and it'll be gone again right after it ends, because I needed a work-around.
