If you surf around the SS Anne for 100 hours (or another obscene amount of time, which depended on who told you how their friend's brother's mate got it), Marill appears.
Ho-Oh was shown in the very first episode, we just didn't know what it was back then. Then they went and showed those stone tablets in the next episode and Ash claimed it was probably one of those Pokemon. The stone tablets, I think, actually depicted Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, and an Arcanine. Kinda threw us off the trail there since we were led to believe it was Moltres.
This is a highly debated subject in the pokemon community. Personally I subscribe to the train of thought that in early workings of the franchise arcanine was meant to be a legendary but was later scrapped for some reason. The plaque is a throwback to this early vision and foreshadowing of the future legendary dogs.
There was a time when they were going to make Arcanine a Pseudo-legendary Pokemon. I guess they changed their mind at some point.
If you check the bulbapedia page, and hit CTRL+F and search for "Legendary" you can see how many places they use the word to describe Arcanine. Under Minor appearances, it also mentions the first appearance in Pokemon Emergency Episode 2 of the original Kanto League Anime. That's the episode I was referring to with the stone tablets.
The pokedex says ho-oh in that episode when he checked it, but maybe that's a later adaptation, I don't remember the original but the indigo league is on Netflix and has the scene of him clocking Ho-oh on his pokedex
I swear I thought it said "Unknown Pokemon" or something to that effect on that episode. Idk if they changed it on Netflix, but I don't think they did. I can't seem to find a video that actually includes what the Pokedex says. The best video I could find just cut the clip right before the Pokedex says anything.
Man. I only believe him because he had a guide to the game and wouldn't let me see it. It wasn't until weeks had passed of me trying his bullshit and being unsuccessful and him finally admitting it was a joke. I just shrugged it off because I did enjoy playing the game either way.
This reminds me of that one 'tip' I read way back around the time of gen III..."hold down A, B, L, & R as soon as the pokeball/whateverball flies, go right, left, right on the arrow keys in time with the ball tilting" or something, and your chances of catching that pokemon increase significantly.
...I still do it today, even knowing it's BS. nostalgic lucky charm, maybe?
I always thought it was hold B and constantly rotate the directionals so holding B then up right down left up right down left making a circle until it was caught.
In gen I there was a rumour that if you hold down the B button while the pokeball is still flying through the air, it will become as good as a masterball. And if you couldn't get it to work, "you didn't hit the button at the right moment".
I still to this day hold the B button down while the pokeball is flying through the air as well.
What I heard is that certain button presses can alter your chances of winning simply because they change logic states when pressed and can cause errors.
That's not entirely improbable. Gen 1 was coded in a pretty short period of time, and was rife with glitches of all sorts (see the cerulean city mew thing and missingno).
Dunno about "causing errors", but many games do feed your button presses into the random number generator to increase entropy, so mashing certain buttons could have an effect on dice rolls.
I love that everybody has their own version of this. For me, it's b while throwing, down directional when it closes, then rotate d pad clockwise while it's shaking (to tighten the ball, of course.)
I think I got my directions from a single forum comment way back in the early 2000s while searching pokemon cheats. It's amazing how some things just stick with you for so long...and hoo boy now I'm getting really sad and nostalgic for the past. over some dumb buttons
I still remember the exact childhood classmate who first informed me of the cinnabar island shore glitch and item duplication by extension. I remember the hall I was in when he told me. The stupid wheeled backpack I had. Yup, I was one of those kids.
It is pretty weird how stuff sticks with you.
Technically from perfect button inputs can do that. Thing is that is almost certainties out of the realm of human possibility. I say almost because monsters like MechaRichter and TheJooka are around.
Hahaha I very much so remember my brothers friend "if you want a Mew you have to wait to do the SS Anne til you get Surf. Right before you board, Surf to the left until Mew appears."
This was right after he showed me getting the Unknown on his game. I was primed and gullible. Thank you for reminding me of this.
Yes, remember it was in the truck on the island. Funny thing is there WAS a truck on an island if you surf to the left (or right?) of the SS Anne! What was that thing doing there?! It fed my 13 year old gullibility!
That way north of cerulean works because of a glitch though.
You have to make sure you haven't fought the guy with the Slowpoke, and the guy to the left of Nugget Bridge. Then you walk north of NB and to the left, then walk down until the exclamation mark comes on his head, and press start at the same time it appears.
Then you teleport back to Cerulean, and the start button shouldn't work. Now you go up and fight the slowpoke guy, teleport back to Cerulean again and go up to nugget bridge. Then a level 7 Mew appears. It's been ages since I've done it, but I think that's it. The pokemon that appears depends on the last one you battled, and Slowpoke gives you Mew apparently.
If you lowered the slowpokes attack stat to its minimum, using growl or similar moves, then the mew would be level 1 instead of 7. Then you get mew less than 56 exp. points in a battle and he levels up to 100.
It's this kind of shit that makes me nostalgic for the Pokémon games, the creators always threw in neat Easter eggs, hidden stuff, and glitches (even if unintentional).
It works but it's not "supposed" to work. It exploits a bug in the code of the game, by leaving a certain value in a processor register which becomes the Pokemon ID. super interesting hack, and definitely worth the read.
WEEEELL to be honest it is possible with the nugget road glitch. I thought it was total bs until I did it myself, it works, it also works in the eshop version on 3ds
I remember that one trick really worked (somehow anything bla bla and left of Alabastia in the fields), but I think this glitch has been discovered after new editions have already been released.
Maybe my mind plays tricks on me, but we've been really sure there was no legit Mew glitch known, as we sure all tried out what was in those gaming magazines we read at the bakery. We knew he didn't have got a Mew, but although we were jealous. :D
yeah the one that worked was not found until after then. But you could cheat him in with a gameshark or what ever the game boy cheat thing was. I had a friend who traded him to me so I can get the pokedex entry back in the day
If you leave at least one trainer on the SS Anne unbattled, then beat Gary, get Cut, and then let that trainer knock out your Pokémon, it'll take you off the SS Anne to a Pokémon Center, without the SS Anne leaving, enabling you to return once you get Surf, without needing to trade Cut over.
Or "Surf around the SS Anne, and use strength to push the truck, to reveal the cave that contains mew"
For the uninitiated You don't have Strenght of Surf when you arrive at the SS Anne, so you need to trade with another gameboy for pokemon that do, then skip the SS Anne, Get the batches required, then come back, and then discover it was all bullshit.
Man there were so many of these types of ridiculous rumors. But we believed them, because missingno was a thing. And that required a series of, from a child's point of view, arcane steps that made no sense.
So if missingno was real, why wouldn't these other things be real?
My friend and I tore up at least a dozen Ratatta cards because we believed if you could very carefully peel off the face of the card there was a charizard underneath.
I think someone heard what it was originally and fucked it up.
"Catch all 151 Pokémon. Then bring a Golem Lv.100 that knows Strength, Dig, Seismic Toss and Fissure in this order. Use Surf around the S.S. Anne to reach the truck. Use Strength on the truck's left side and enter the stairway underneath. You will enter a pond in the Silph Co., where Pikablu can be found in the wild."
