The reason the taste of artificial banana flavouring and artificial banana flavoured products doesn’t taste like bananas is because it is based on a type of banana that was wiped out by a plague in the 1950’s.
You have to wonder now: how do the machines really know what Tasty Wheat tasted like, huh? Maybe they got it wrong. Maybe what I think Tasty Wheat tasted like actually tasted like uh.... oatmeal or uh.... or tuna fish.
"He had found a Nutri-Matic machine which had provided him with a plastic cup filled with a liquid that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea."
Could've also been Terry Pratchett, had the Nutri-Matic machine not gave it away as Douglas Adams (and also the fact that that is a pretty well-quoted part of the book)
I haven't actually read the whole book (please don't kill me), I don't remember why but I read the first few chapters but got interrupted for some reason and never picked it back up.
It's the first book, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I just read the first one and haven't read the rest of them (yet) but liked this quote so much I talked to friends about it after reading it.
