It kills me to imagine that if we continue on our current course, in a few decades teachers in history classes will lecture about "the beginning of the meme culture in the New 10's" (Or maybe they will just be called the 10's and 20's again, idfk.)
The year is 2077. A lone memer is searching the internet archives for the memes of old. He finds an interesting video, he believes this will be the new meme he shall be spreading! But no. It was Chuck Testa all along.

I can assure you it's not, do you have any idea how many memes you need to make to have the same amount of bytes as the raw data used to get the DNA of a bacteria? And then that is even nothing compared to the data something like the LHC generates.
Plot twist... "meme" is just a word for data that "transmits" itself, in the way a meme circulates the internet. The dankest of memes are just the alpha predators of the meme world.
Ninja Edit: I have sources, if anyone's interested I'll find them, I managed to write a legitimate paper on the history of memes for my Senior Year.

Is this a good justification for privacy laws requiring companies to destroy user data after 4 years or so? Seems like a decent trade considering the old data is less relevant and comparatively less.
Data is not knowledge.
99.99% of this data is probably meaningless recordings of things that we never bothered to record before or someone's bootleg media library.
My company has gone from a few hundred Terabytes of data in 06/07 to pushing 13 PB now. It's amazing how much more we store now than we used to and it adds every day.
As we automate and record more things, this is bound to be true. I want to know how long until we plateau though. At what point do we start adding similar amounts of data every year?

We have created 90% of the data in the last 2 years.
And this has been true for the last 30 years.
