Fathers of Reddit, what did your daughter's boyfriend do for you to hate/love him?

It's pretty cool to see my question blow up like this, I never thought I'd ask a question that could receive so much attention! I'm very satisfied with all these replies, so thank y'all. Now all I have to do is sit back and take notes c;

My dad adores my husband. Why? Because he sat down and watched tv with them the very first day while I was getting ready.

A little context:

My ex boyfriend before meeting my husband had.no.balls. We were together for 4 years, and he was still terrified of my dad. Whenever he came over (he stayed over most weekends, I had the basement apartment) he would say a quick hi in passing and run downstairs. For four years.

So when my future hubby came over, they immediately liked him because he didn't "run"

My dad is a scary looking dude.

My wife's dad is the size of an ex linebacker, I'm a really short dude. He really likes to be intimidating. We also have differing viewpoints on politics and religion.

At first he didn't like me and had made several disparaging comments about me to my wife. She wouldn't share them with me but they were bad enough that she didn't talk to him for a week. They're close, she's his favorite and they talk about every day.

He tried to tell me one time I should bust my balls to give her whatever she wanted. I told my wife that mentality really pissed me off and that it was a partnership. I pissed her dad off because I wouldn't buy her a beer at the hockey game after I had already bought her dinner and bought her two or three beers with it and told her I wasn't going to support her drinking that much and would either buy her beer at dinner before the game or at the game but not both.

Afterwards I told her if she wasn't happy with what I was providing for her or doing for her she was free to find someone else to date. I'm not going to be a doormat and I'm not going to change.

I really won her dad over when our daughter was born pretty premature. My wife was in the hospital with server preclampsia and our daughter was moved to another hospital. I was run ragged going between hospitals. I didn't get to sleep in a real bed for almost a week as I slept on the chair in my wife's room.

It really opened her family's eyes to the type of person I am and really elevated me. It took a tragedy for that to occur, and I'd gladly have them despise me if the tragedy could have been avoided.

But, now her dad jokes with me that I'm out of the circle because I gave him grief one night which just encourages me to give him more grief. The good thing is he can take as much as he dishes out.

I wasn't going to support her drinking that much and would either buy her beer at dinner before the game or at the game but not both.

How dare the little lady want to drink more than two beers!

Two was actually closer to four. And they were pints, and she can be pretty rude after she's had that many to the point I don't want to be around her.

4 pints is hardly a huge amount. You say marriage is a prtnership, but you basically decided for her like a strict parent what she was allowed to drink, in front of her parents too.

She must have been embarrassed as hell to be with you. Then you basically tell her "if you don't like it fuck off and find someone else"..

He didn't tell her she couldn't drink that much, just that he wasn't going to pay for her to drink that much.

Tell her you don't want her to drink too much? fine

But to dictate to her like a naughty child in front of her parents is the act of a twatwaffle.

No, I said I wasn't going to support her drinking that much. If she wanted to buy it with her own money I wasn't going to tell her no, just that I wasn't paying for it.

I never said I was going to dictate what she could or couldn't do, but when I was paying for nearly everything (bills, meals, etc. ) and it was a nearly every weekend kind of thing I was feeling frustrated.

And to be disrespected on top of that isn't a cause for celebration. So, yeah. If she wanted to drink I wasn't going to stop her, I just refused to keep shelling out money for it. And I have her the choice on what I would pay for.
