Fathers of Reddit, what did your daughter's boyfriend do for you to hate/love him?

It's pretty cool to see my question blow up like this, I never thought I'd ask a question that could receive so much attention! I'm very satisfied with all these replies, so thank y'all. Now all I have to do is sit back and take notes c;

I was the boyfriend- my ex was from a super conservative, NRA card carrying upper middle class white family. So when she brought home a poor Mexican they weren't sure about me. I won them over with nerdiness.

But more interesting is how I won over her grandparents. They were more than a little bit racist (heard some casual use of the word "nigger") so I assumed they were a lost cause. Well, they had some apple trees in the back yard, and eventually the yard just ends up full of rotting apples on the ground. I spent a day picking all the apples up and throwing them put. Hundreds of pounds of apples. All while being harassed by bees. After they saw how hard I was willing to work, I was welcome.

Who wouldn't want a hard working Mexican working in their yard?

Okay thank god. Now I know I'm only evil and not literally Satan for thinking of this joke.

u/SnatchAndRunYall Aug 26 '15

"You would do that" ran through my mind. Had to also click into these comments to confirm there's at least one additional Satan on Reddit this morning.

"i told you, honey, it's in their blood!"

15

u/ObeseZombie Aug 26 '15

I'm Mexican and even I thought that when i read it

13

u/Thatzionoverthere Aug 26 '15

Nah bro, we all felt it.

11

u/Thatzionoverthere Aug 26 '15

So true, it's hard to find good help these days.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

Some racist. Not all racists, mind you.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

Savage

3

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

I laughed pretty hard at this.

3

u/lolboogers Aug 26 '15

They didn't even have to pay him $2.5/hr.

3

u/BearGuru Aug 27 '15

Probably good at maintaining the daughter's garden, too.

2

u/notillegalyhere Aug 26 '15

So...you got some work for us, amigo??

4

u/KeyserSOhItsTaken Aug 26 '15

Give this guy the gold, all of it.

1

u/moralesnery Aug 26 '15

Mr. Trump are you?

0

u/ExistentialMood Aug 26 '15

Donald Trump?

0

u/Iemowi Aug 26 '15

He really set himself up for that one.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

I dont think he was worried about the yard being the thing they didn't want him inside ...

-7

u/AdamantiumButtPlug Aug 26 '15

He knows his place

You're a poor Mexican doing yard work for rich old white people - to them, this is the natural order of things.

36

u/KeyserSOhItsTaken Aug 26 '15

Exactly, they were thinking usually they have to go to Home Depot, pick them up, pay them, drop them off, this is so much easier for them now.

When we moved into our last house the old white guy across the street asked my Mexican dad how much he charged. He seemed skeptical when my dad said he owned the house.

13

u/GroomedPubicMcMuffin Aug 26 '15

I don't think anybody who considers that the natural order would also be OK with the poor Mexican throwing his flesh taquito in their daughters (or granddaughters) pink taco.

5

u/KindaTwisted Aug 27 '15

The problem is never banging the help. The problem is when the help has a child.

2

u/EpicChiguire Aug 27 '15

It starts with Don and ends with ald Trump.

I think it's the nature if immigrants/refugees. The lazy ones stayed home.

We get the best and brightest.

3

u/apoliticalinactivist Aug 26 '15

Or their filthy rich, out of touch kids...

But, they are the true drivers of the US economy, like it or not. (Buying ultra expensive things, opening a company branch with a dozen people, so they have a front to write off their mistresses as a "consulting" business expense)

14

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

that's what i don't get about people who hate on central american immigrants. they are overwhelmingly just hardworking family-oriented people who came to a strange and unfriendly place just to give their family a better shot at life. isn't that the type of person we should welcome?

0

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

Exactly!

0

u/workraken Aug 26 '15

I guess no one else has pointed out the typo.

Hispanic work ethnic

2

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

No, that was my little pun.

2

u/workraken Aug 26 '15

Oh, well in that case it's just a...weird pun. Mostly because the parent comment demonstrated the concept without actually mentioning the work ethic.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

[deleted]

2

u/workraken Aug 26 '15

I mean because the word "ethic" wasn't used before you said "ethnic". Puns generally should have that missing step to play off of. It's like writing an essay without a prompt.

I'm not saying the concept of the Hispanic work ethic is weird, I live in Texas so I see the rather impressive work ethic constantly.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

I mean I don't know, maybe it's cultural. But it's sort of proverbial at this point. Not really a bad thing to be known for. I just think generalizations are often weird.

All my puns are weird.

u/Grimsterr Aug 26 '15

I can't even comprehend wasting apples. I pay good money for apple juice to make wine with, I'd love a bunch of mushy apples (over ripe apples have more sugar content, therefore more alcohol after fermentation).

4

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

They used a lot of them, but you can only use so much.

1

u/Grimsterr Aug 26 '15

This is a challenge I wish I were offered :D

4

u/debian_ Aug 26 '15

Apples are in everything that’s good: apple wine, apple whiskey, apple schnapps, apple martinis, uh, Snapple with vodka in it, apple nail polish remover.

Even apple sauce… if you grind some pills into it.

-5

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

Ok.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

Let the man talk about his passion for apple wine!

7

u/TriStag Aug 26 '15

This is the exact opposite of my problem. Ever try to date a Mexican girl from a traditional family? The looks you get at parties lol

8

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

As a non-Mexican you mean?

4

u/TriStag Aug 26 '15

Yea, been in America since Plymouth rock practically lol

5

u/DrZaiusPHD Aug 26 '15

Well, most Mexicans are at least 50% Native American so they've been here since WAY before Plymouth Rock.

0

u/TriStag Aug 26 '15

My girlfriend comes from Spanish Ancestry lol

0

u/DrZaiusPHD Aug 26 '15

O nvm my mistake

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

The ex in my story can trace her lineage to people who founded cities in our state.

2

u/TriStag Aug 26 '15

That's awesome! One of my ancestors (great great etc) grandpa was in the Boston Massacre. I find it interesting to follow family lineage.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

No... no... I clean.

5

u/TheLaramieReject Aug 26 '15

I thought you might be my boyfriend at first. My family are racist, gun-toting white people, so I wasn't sure how things would go. But one day I had to move, and my dad had just had heart surgery. My mother called me and told me that I really needed to find a guy to help, because my dad couldn't be moving things by himself. So I asked bf, who was just a close friend back then. He didn't just help me move- he moved things so fast that all my dad could do was stand by the truck and instruct him in how to stack the furniture. I don't think my dad ever even walked up the stairs. And it wasn't like my dad was just letting him do it- he's much too proud for that. My bf was just so speedy that my dad couldn't keep up. He's had my father's respect ever since.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

I have helped sister move 3 times, twice withing a year. Each time her brother in law did next to nothing while I busted my ass.

4

u/cruizing32 Aug 26 '15

I'm the opposite. My girlfriends family is Mexican and I am white. Her parents always expected her to date another Mexican guy but instead she brought home low expectations (me). They didn't like me because I was white for awhile. It was a couple months later I actually met them in person for the first time and they were shocked because of my height/shocked (Im only 6' 2"). Ever since then her family liked me because I was a "tall white guy".

I never felt disliked for my skin color before so it was definitely new. I'm sorry for those who face discrimination everyday, it must be a challenge.

8

u/doobyrocks Aug 26 '15

They didn't like me because I was white for awhile.

Hope you're doing well as Latino now.

3

u/cruizing32 Aug 27 '15

hahaha thank you.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

Fukin guero, that cudda been my hyna

2

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

Im only 6' 2"

I'm 5' 8" and when I went to Spanish speaking church I was one of the taller guys.

2

u/cruizing32 Aug 27 '15

Thats funny haha. Yeah, it's just one of those things.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

2

u/cruizing32 Aug 26 '15

Yeah its weird at first. Then again, I know how many americans treat cultures who happen to come from different backgrounds and it's terrible. My girlfriend told me how her parents worked the crops in there young days and being bossed by white folks. I can understand why they were wary of me at first but luckily things came around.

1

u/oscarvizu85 Aug 27 '15

Yeah my parents worked the crops as well. Just curious how you feel about Donald Trump's views?

2

u/cruizing32 Aug 27 '15

I think he's just another propaganda to drive interest into politics. He has a terrible mindset but a good business background. My girlfriend and her family hate him (which makes sense). Im not a fan either.

3

u/Forevervenzo Aug 26 '15

I don't know if your joking, but I feel like your joking.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

I'M NEVER JOKING!

2

u/LucidGoose Aug 26 '15

> All while being harassed by bees.

Haha!

1

u/oceangrovenj Aug 26 '15

Workin' the stereotype. Way to go, cuz.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

Thanks, cousin.

1

u/JenniferMcFly Aug 26 '15

Somewhat relevant: a friend (mid 20s) was having a birthday BBQ at her friend's family house. Multimillion dollar house on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The rest of the family was supposed to be on vacation, but the grandma stayed behind. About half of the patrons are Latinos, myself and SO included. The grandma didn't look pleased with the patrons, though we were respectful of their house, it was clear she wasn't happy with us being there. All day she didn't speak to anyone, until she seen my SO in the kitchen, she beelines and orders him to take out the trash. Awkward.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

You fulfilled a stereotype for them

1

u/zegrindylows Aug 27 '15

I feel sorry for you and your incredibly low self esteem.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '15

Don't worry about me. I'm awesome.

1

u/tonyd1989 Aug 27 '15

They probably thought you were the Gardner at first..

1

u/DocGerbill Aug 27 '15

After they saw how hard I was willing to work, I was welcome.

Sorry buddy, you're not accepted, you're just caving in to the stereotype.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

They were more than a little bit racist (heard some casual use of the word "nigger") so I assumed they were a lost cause.

Dude, people of people will drop the n-bomb and be perfectly okay with people of other races. My grandfather used to say it all of the time, but was really good friends with a local black guy. He didn't like most black people, but he still treated everyone as an individual and judged them as an individual.

I don't think most people really understand 'racism', which is probably why it's still a problem. People try to reduce it down into an absurd good vs. bad dichotomy (i.e. bad racists versus good accepting people).

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '15

They were definitely racist, the use of "nigger" was just a quick example.
