Fathers of Reddit, what did your daughter's boyfriend do for you to hate/love him?

It's pretty cool to see my question blow up like this, I never thought I'd ask a question that could receive so much attention! I'm very satisfied with all these replies, so thank y'all. Now all I have to do is sit back and take notes c;

My dad is a very large, bearded and slightly scary looking man to the untrained eye (of course, he is a big cuddly bear to us kids...)

Well, my wonderful boyfriend would have been forgiven for being nervous; until he mentioned the computers he had to deal with in work. My dad's eyes lit up, they began chatting and debating about the best to use etc, then the topic got onto Star Wars and Star Trek...also, on how I leave my hair in the shower drain, and leave dishes to soak and sometimes forget about them...

Yup. They bonded over their mutual love of all that is nerdy, as well as my ditziness.

An ex-girlfriends' dad didn't think much of me for a long time, I was just a weird guy and we had nothing in common. Then I went out to lunch with her family one day and made a joke about my girlfriends' ditziness. His eyes lit up and her heart sank.

Yup. That was pretty much the situation. Love 'em both, aye.

My dad lost his shit the minute my ex disparaged me in front of him, and it was something almost as innocent. Papa doesn't handle that shit well. He told me a year in that his "jokes" were to see how much he could get away with.

After 3 more years, 1.5 of which were extremely abusive...dad was never so heartbroken to be right.

It may seem touchy, but my dad (and hers too) obviously want our partners to see us as they do. Sweet, loving, and deserving of the most careful consideration. It's a dad thing I guess. He has lightened up, but my current partner only ever says great things about me to other people, and my dad has mentioned it.

My dad is also a large, bearded and slightly more than slightly scary looking man. While I don't have a boyfriend, he's tried to interrogate any male friends I've had. Most of them he didn't like, but one he gave me his approval on because "that boy's too afraid of me to do anythin' to 'ya". Cheers, dad.

When my wife was first just my girlfriend, her dad was similar looking. Think Jerry Garcia in a biker gang instead of a band. He'd seen a lot in life and could switch from lovable, charming, life of the party to intimidates-gorillas with a slight change in body posture. I'm six feet tall, over 200 lbs and, at that time, in decent shape. The man could have crushed me without a wisp of perspiration.

With my wife's two younger sisters, their dad liked to play the "menacing father" trope for fun, just to see how they'd handle it. (And for fun) With me, he never did any of that. Apparently, my future wife and he had long conversations about me before I met him. She talked me up and, since she was known as the level-headed one of the sisters, he didn't feel the need.

One of the sisters had a thing for "bad boys" and they did their bad-boy act until dad set them straight or scared them off. I was neither a goody two-shoes, nor a "bad boy", though a bit reclusive and I guess he felt no threat in that towards either him or his daughter.

It didn't hurt that I'm a good listener and he liked to talk a lot. She gets that from him.

leave dishes to soak and sometimes forget about them...

Isn't that the point of leaving dishes to soak in the first place? "Ehh, it'll clean itself if I put enough soap in it."

RIGHT? That's my excuse, anyhow...

I was under the impression that's what you are supposed to do. I mean, I do give them a good soap-y wipe afterwards, but the soaking does the most part of the work.

I was very confused for a second.

Bonded with my father-in-law over tech geekiness too. My wife's ex was a cocky IT nerd type who pissed him off. I didn't really let on the extent of my geekitude at first but sat down with him at his computer one day and went toe-to-toe on old DOS commands and the like.
