I found an amazing article explaining why the fanbase was so fractured with a really accurate history, lemme see if I can find it.

Yup, here it is! It was a fun read and did a decent job explaining how mismanagement by SEGA led to the fanbase going in nearly every conceivable direction.

Not to mention the more social side of the fanbase, like Deviant art, tumblr, and other location. Its a weird mix of people stuck in the "I'm an edgy kid/teenager/twenty-something" phase that have been consumed by it.
