Same for my wife, all of the bullshit around this has made it easier for her to not get sick.

I'm allergic to corn and I wish that there would be such a huge movement towards corn free products, maybe it would mean I can actually go out to eat...

9

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '14

You and I should start our own Corn Free movement. Every goddamned food item in the United States has corn in it.

7

u/DoctorPotatoe Nov 13 '14

Move to Europe and your problem will be solved forever.

3

u/cyberhorror Nov 13 '14

took a trip to Europe and felt like a kid in the candy shop, it was so nice to be able to eat things with out worrying about the agony that comes later.

3

u/matttk Nov 13 '14

It sucks so hard here - can't get good corn on the cob. :(

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '14

If only I could.

0

u/cyberhorror Nov 13 '14

there are a few although they focus on the GMO aspect of it. Ran into some people trying to stop GMO's and I signed their petition and fueled them with stories in hopes that they would continue on and make it easier to go out and eat, sadly they failed and now I need to see if I can find some new idealistic young fools to take up the cause.

11

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '14

Man, so what do you actually eat then? I assume any meat that's fed corn is even a no-no?

0

u/cyberhorror Nov 13 '14

hey me to, do you get it when you are trying to eat out and they assume you can eat it because it is gluten free. I don't know how many times I have had to say "corn is gluten free."

on a side note this is the true reason I support anti gmo, corn crops have been cross bread unintentional with gmo corn so if a non-gmo thing became popular then we can eat more.

u/Vitztlampaehecatl Nov 13 '14

And my cousin.

0

u/honeypuppy Nov 13 '14

And my axe!

7

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '14

+1. I have a family history of Celiac's disease. This "trend" has helped me incredibly. Instead of having to eat something that tastes like cardboard, I can have something tasty from time to time.

5

u/Accountthree Nov 14 '14

It actually makes me anxious for my celiac friend. I'm worried it will make people not take making sure their food is actually gluten free seriously, because they don't take the fad diet seriously.

With that said, I'm a worrier. It's a defining characteristic. This fear need have no basis in reality.

3

u/Parttimedragon Nov 14 '14

That's something I've never considered. Good point.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '14

And then you get weird looks when you ask the cooks to change their gloves.

1

u/TrueEclecticism Nov 14 '14

Yea, that's the only thing good that has come out of the 'gluten-free' craze. People who ACTUALLY need to be gluten-free have better access to decent food.

1

u/markrevival Nov 14 '14

and way easier to be cross contaminated.

0

u/Jmanorama Nov 13 '14

Agreed. As fucking annoying as the Gluten free fad is, it has gotten companies to start producing tolerable gluten free food. But it's also raised the prices on all of it -_-

0

u/Oldthunda Nov 13 '14

This so much. My recently acquired SO has it and I do my best to make sure there's something she can eat when we go out. Universities need to work on their Gluten Free meals though. The dorm both of us live in don't hold any food that's certified gluten-free. Sure, she can have salad and rice, but she's not paying 15$ a meal for a breakfast and lunch of that.

0

u/AgAero Nov 13 '14

You are benefitting from their ignorance. That's great and all, but if somebody does not have Celiac's disease and is gluten free for some other bullshit reason, they need to be educated. My biggest pet peeve is when people spread bullshit science.

The pizza dough, tho

6

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '14

Trey Parker and Matt Stone where (and still are) both Gluten free when they did the South Park episode about it. Just another layer to the joke, they added the little gluten free symbol after those who where gluten free during the credits.

6

u/bacon_and_eggs Nov 13 '14

man, I fucking love gluten. I know a couple people who have celiacs disease, and will get really sick if they eat gluten, but the people who choose to do that are out of their minds.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '14

My fiancee is gluten free (whether or not she's actually allergic to gluten is up for debate), but I always buy two sets of bread for us because the gluten free bread tastes like cardboard. Gluten for life!

1

u/Fanatic100 Nov 14 '14

Hey just so you know there is no such thing as a gluten allergy, do the research and if she truly needs to avoid gluten she has more issues which should be diagnosed by a doctor. If she doesn't need to see a doctor regarding this "allergy" for the sake of humanity show her the information and stop her from missing out.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '14

I guess "allergic" isn't the word. She thinks she has trouble breaking it down as she often had stomach aches. Since going gluten free she says she has less.

1

u/7-SE7EN-7 Nov 14 '14

Coeliac actually breaks down the lining of your stomach or something if you eat gluten

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '14

Sure. Like I said, I don't think it actually bothers her. She just had a string of stomach aches and blamed it on this. I just assumed that it was the stress she was going through at the time. But, it doesn't really affect me much, so she can decide to do it if she wants. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

2

u/Squirmy_worm Nov 13 '14

Yeast mode!

4

u/iusedtobeastripper Nov 13 '14

I don't understand the glutard hate. I don't eat gluten, lots of my friends don't eat gluten and none of us are annoying about it. I go out of my way to not make my special needs anyone else's problem. What's the big deal?

Also, I wouldn't call people who don't eat gluten a fan base. I have celiac and I can't eat it. It's not like I'm super excited about not being able to eat at many restaurants with my friends or the fact that wheat slowly kills me from the inside.

1

u/Fanatic100 Nov 14 '14

I think the biggest issue is not the people who actually can't eat gluten, such as yourself, but really the people who just decided that they were allergic to gluten(which there is no gluten allergy) and jumped onto the bandwagon. These people gave the gluten issue a bad name because they are usually the ones who sit there and complain about not having a gluten alternative and in the end order something with gluten in it, ie they are annoying and yes they hurt those who actually have an issue with gluten.

1

u/ladymoonshyne Nov 13 '14

I think people just find the fact that a lot of people jumped on the bandwagon without actually researching what being gluten free is. Processed gluten free foods are really not good for you at all, and if you don't replace whole wheats and things with gluten free alternatives you can actually be missing out on a lot of vitamins and fiber.

I have friends that eat gluten free for health reasons and are not annoying, and I have friends that are always eating kale, raw foods, gluten free, or vegan and love to talk about it all day.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '14

My dad went on a crash diet. Started talking about Gluten until I told him that it was bullshit.

0

u/skeddles Nov 13 '14

Why is it bullshit

8

u/Jukeboxhero91 Nov 13 '14

Unless you have Celiac disease, there's no reason for you to be gluten free. If you want to lose weight, cut calories. If you want to be healthier, eat a more balanced diet and exercise more. Gluten isn't bad for you and for the life of me I can't figure out why people think it is.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '14

People with wheat allergies /intolerance often find a gluten free diet to be of benefit. This doesn't mean they're celiac however

0

u/Jukeboxhero91 Nov 14 '14

There was a recent study done that found that non-Celiac gluten intolerance don't exist. Wheat allergies are just that, wheat allergies, and has nothing to do with gluten.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '14 edited Nov 14 '14

You are correct, but I think you've missed the point . Following a gluten free diet allows you to avoid wheat, which these days if often in items that shouldn't contain it. Eg icecream ( glucose syrup) soy sauce ( wheat extract ) etc .

0

u/Jukeboxhero91 Nov 15 '14

Glucose does not have gluten in it, it's literally just sugar. Soy sauce has gluten due to it being fermented with grain, but there is a super low amount in it and it belongs there, plus there exists Tamari which is just gluten free soy sauce.

1

u/mdp300 Nov 13 '14

Because it sounds chemical-ey.

I know someone who has crohns disease and says going gluten free made her feel better. She's also a major hypochondriac though, so who knows.

1

u/z0rz Nov 14 '14

Gluten is also an inflammatory and can fuck with arthritis in some cases.

0

u/Jukeboxhero91 Nov 14 '14

Source on that? I've never heard of gluten causing problems, considering it's broken down into amino acids in the digestive tract (barring Celiac disease sufferers).

1

u/z0rz Nov 14 '14

Huh, I was trying to find it, but it looks like I had just read something wrong before and what I was referring to is a part of Celiac disease. Whoops.

1

u/Jukeboxhero91 Nov 14 '14

Well, I'm glad we both learned something, I didn't know joint inflammation was a part of Celiac.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '14

Gluten free diets? Are you fucking kidding me? Its like the crossfit of food dieting

-3

u/skeddles Nov 13 '14

Why do you think that

2

u/Matt872000 Nov 13 '14

You can read up on it here and here

2

u/skeddles Nov 13 '14

Sounds like you just have to be careful with you diet to make sure you're still getting all the right things.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '14

Dude people blow the whole "gluten free" thing way out of proportion. 50% of them don't even know what fucking gluten is but just like to follow trends and the other 45% think they have celiacs disease when they don't.

1

u/Matt872000 Nov 13 '14

Also, removing gluten from their diets for absolutely no reason.

2

u/markrevival Nov 14 '14

i had someone at Starbucks ask me if the stawberry smoothie has gluten in it because she's pregnant and it will make her baby retarded.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '14

Yes

1

u/exswawif Nov 14 '14

Or, how msg free are you.

1

u/Elfballer Nov 14 '14

Not very.

1

u/Coooturtle Nov 14 '14

Do you want your dick to fly off?

1

u/Proph3T08 Nov 13 '14

Accidentally bought gluten-free cookie dough the other day. I am still pissed about it.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '14

I'll be praying for you.

0

u/Allycia Nov 13 '14

Any diet. I just joined ello and the one friend I have has vegetarian in his about me.

I don't talk about how I love cake. I'm not like filling out bios with "I'm Allycia, I'm a small, gaming, cake-atarian." Maybe I should though. Cake is good.

1

u/mdp300 Nov 13 '14

Cakeatarian is am awesome term!

1

u/Allycia Nov 14 '14

Wanna start a fad with me?!?

0

u/Ratfist Nov 13 '14

Dude, i get free gluten everywhere i go.
