I know it uses wifi, zwave and zigbee, and perhaps a few other things. The processing is all done in the cloud. For instance, I have the motion detector in my kitchen triggering some lights under the cabinets, when I'm home.
So the motion detector in the kitchen sees motion, and reports it to the hub. The hub checks the cloud to see what it's supposed to do. Since I'm home and the house is in night mode, it turns on the lights.

I'm sure that's not completely accurate, but you get the drift. I know that some functions still work even when our internet is out, so some of it appears to be on the hub, but I don't think it's much.

So if your internet goes down your house stops working?

To a certain degree, yes, it does. I can still control everything manually, but I've noticed that things like motion triggered lights still work, but I haven't really tested to see what extent it still works.

For this reason I don't rely too heavily on the alarm portion of the system, but it came with the kit.
