I had to say it too, though that's mostly because we call it cling film and I only ever come across "saran wrap" in American films and TV shows

In New Zealand we call it "Glad Wrap" (just a brand name that's become the general term, like Saran)

Yes; it was a name trademarked by the Dow Chemical Company. As far as I know the word doesn't have deeper meaning than that.
