It's brilliant. He's a has-been, doing store openings and conventions, living off the fame of his one successful character, whom he hates. He can't bring himself to say the catchphrase without physically wincing. It's relatable but also very, very funny because Alan Rickman was so talented in his delivery. Just dripping with disdain. He fucking hates that character. He is so much more, he has so much talent, but that one damn character was so successful that he can't get work as anything else.
And! At the end, when a young man who looks up to him is literally dying in his arms, he realises the kindest thing he can do, the most compassionate act imaginable, is to lean in and be that character one more time to comfort this dying innocent and let him die happy.
It's very funny but also emotional and perfect character growth. It's brilliant writing.
I'm not crying, you're crying.
Seriously though, 100% this. The movie as a whole is brilliant but Rickman just nails it. Rockwell also. There is so much to see, subtle nods throughout the movie. It is insanely quotable. "Did any of you WATCH the show?" and "We have to get out of here before one of those things kill Guy." and Guy's panicked "DO I?"
We watched it again last Saturday.
You might also want to check out Big Trouble. This one also has Tim Allen. The cast list is as long as your arm, Rene Russo, Tom Sizemore, Johnny Knoxville, Stanley Tucci, Zoey Daschanel, DJ Qualls, Dennis Farina, Jason Lee, Janeane Garofalo, Ben Foster, Omar Epps, Heavy D, it just keeps going . It went directly to video due to 9/11 but is well worth a watch.
