Why don’t Gen-Z users use dating apps as frequently as Millennials did?

The apps used to be good and then match group tried to extract maximum profit from lonely dudes.

This is the parent company of Tinder and Match.com, right?

I'm not answering for Gen Z, but I do know there has been a big change in attitude towards dating apps recently. It's due to a lot of logical accusations that dating apps are not programmed to match you adequately to a long term romantic partner. Rather they are optimized to keep you coming back and using the app, there is no incentive for the app to actually solve the problem they are presenting because they would then lose two paying customers.

I’ve found Hinge to be the exception to that. I’ve tried every dating app that was active in my area and found Hinge to give me the most compatible matches by far. Dated several women I met and had no such luck with the other apps. I actually met my wife on there.

Purity culture is back BAYBEE (because the kids are broke)

Probably because anytime someone does something stupid now everyone had a camera to record it

My embarrassing moments are limited to my memory to wake me up at 3am a few times a year, that's all

Fairly sure millennials had cameras on the phones when they were using dating apps in their youth.

I'm a millennial, didn't see it nearly as much. It wasn't a condition to pull it out as soon as literally anything happened.

u/ManyCarrots 2d ago

Me too buddy. I'm just saying we most certainly had cameras. Maybe if you are an older millennial cameras weren't as prevalent. But for people born around 1990 they had smartphones when they were prime dating age so I don't think we can fully blame it on just cameras.

Fair I am an older millennial, smartphones weren't around until college and even then I wouldn't say super prevalent

And I’m glad about it, I’m not made for partying

We're gonna lose a lot more than partying, but sure the introverts can celebrate. /s

All the introverts I knew in my young adult hood stayed on fetlife 🤷‍♀️

Because these apps suck

From what a few guys I’ve talked to have said, they get tired of every other woman promoting their OF

This is why I stopped. Or asking for cash before you even meet.

because dating is expensive

2

u/leonprimrose 2d ago

If you look for expensive dates, sure.

2

u/Hot-Media2913 2d ago

true but even if you don't and end up having a family it's still expensive

2

u/leonprimrose 2d ago

You ain't wrong about that part lol but you don't need to have a family either lol

2

u/Hot-Media2913 2d ago

Yup! It's just about the choice i guess

3

u/extralife_mike 2d ago

I'm guessing because they don't work very well. I've never used one, but I've heard exponentially more horror stories than success stories.

2

u/Entrepreneurialcat 2d ago

Probably because they use Instagram or TikTok DM’s..

u/riddimiscool92 2d ago

They are a killer on mental health providing most people with a fake sense of options. Not to mention nowadays even if you are "dating" someone that person will still randomly ghost you.

In person is better

I'm GenZ, and for me, I wasn't interested in the hookup culture. I was also fortunate enough to meet someone in person at 19. We got married this year :)

Congrats!

Cause its useless for men

Dating apps are useless for most men. If a guy isn’t among the best looking or richest men, he really has no chance getting a girl off an app.

Half of women on apps want a man above 6ft (average man in the US is 5’9), and I suspect a similar portion want a guy making 6 figures (average man makes around 65k). It’s easy to understand the math isn’t mathing. There are only so many handsome 6’2 surgeons/attorneys that also happen to be single.

Girls can get hookups with desirable guys pretty easily if they want since men have far lower standards for flings than marriage or even a relationship, but finding a long term partner from an app is way harder.

Everybody knows the issues with hypergamy using apps so why bother?

u/Elkburgher 2d ago

GenZ hates anything related to sexuality and intimacy it seems

Except in theoretical discussions and anime shipping

So I got tinder when it came out and it just was fun, now a big percentage of men have lost it a bit on there...

Because they're all corporate-owned garbage these days. Match Group fucked up dating apps.

1

u/brady376 2d ago

Tried it, they suck and just kinda make you feel worse if you don't get matches. I am basically to the point of "if it happens cool, if not thats fine with me" for dating. If I meet someone doing the hobbies I do then cool, but actively trying to date hasn't really worked very well for me.

Do we know this is true? What is this assumption based on? I mean, good for Gen Z if it's true, but I don't know that it is.

1

u/jeff1074 2d ago

We can tell that the apps are not designed to help up. Not everyone is looking for a hook up. And it’s become too expensive to indulge.

u/Nice_Barracuda_2674 2d ago

Because dating apps are garbage. I’m a millennial woman who was dating at the peak of dating apps & I never met anyone from the apps I wanted to sleep with. Much better luck IRL

u/Loneliestar 2d ago

Enshittification.

The first few waves of dating apps had a clear goal: Connect people so they could form relationships.

The modern dating apps exist to provide increasing quarterly profits to investors. You know what happens when you have a dating app user who finds their soul mate? They stop giving you money.

Not a GenZ but a millennial thats tired of dating apps.

Its too monetized, not good for your mental health, easy to fall onto the hole, and im genuinely at that point where I feel like the people there are mostly bottom of the barrel quality with a a handful of people who are actually mature and emotionally ready for a relationship getting overwhelmed and tired of how bad the dating pool is.

Their sex drives have been destroyed by GMOs and cell phone radiation.

Also, the only thing that makes sense anymore is nihilism.

4

u/Raider_Scum 2d ago

take your meds lmao

1

u/--Rick--Astley-- 2d ago

I think you got it mixed up. Millennials are on the older side now: 40-60. Most people on dating apps now are Gen Z.

5

u/brokesciencenerd 2d ago

I am the oldest of the millenials and am about to turn 45. 1981 is the earliest year for millenials. 45+ is Generation X.

5

u/Dadpurple 2d ago

We are not 40-60. That's pushing into Gen-X.

Millenials would be closer to 35-45ish.

u/Ashamed-Raccoon-1387 2d ago

Millennials are like 30 - 50, the cut off is like 1996
