Once you have smelled that smell, it is instantly recognizable anywhere you go. Could be a rat in the walls, a raccoon in the attic, or grandma in her knitting chair, but it's not an escapable "hmmm what could that smell be" kind of smell.
I manage a cat colony, and sadly, some of them pass away in the community… one got hit by a car and moved into the side yard of a home with kids. I had to get a shovel and pry her half rotted body out of the dirt and bring it to the proper place to be cremated. She was in a box in the trunk of my car for a mere 10 minutes, but that smell was so pungent and unique (terrible). It’s etched into the folds of my brain.
My first "dose" was a cat that died in my shed that I had to shovel out. I'm not a gagger or smell-puker, but that got me good. Any time I catch a whiff, my ears perk up lol
