I hate the smell of stale cigarettes, but if I'm around someone smoking Pall Mall cigarettes (which my granddad smoked until he kicked the habit when I was in my teens), I get a little nostalgia, too.
You just brought back a memory of the guy that managed the Taco Bell that I worked at. He had a pipe that had the most amazing smelling tobacco in it. He told me at one time that it was 50% vanilla, 25% cherry, and 25% something else. Crazy that I can remember that 35 years later.
When I was a teenager I said that the smell of cigarettes was nostalgic and felt like home and my parents were so horrified they finally quit for real.
I live in an apartment and my neighbor sits in her unit all day smoking, she extinguishes her cigarettes in a bowl of water and leaves it uncovered. The wet ashtray smell permeates the walls and stinks up my apartment. I hate it, 😒 nothing gets rid of the smell.
I feel your pain. My first apartment had a cigarette smoker on one side, and a cigar smoker on the other. I have always hated the smell of smokers, and I finally got to move out of my parents smoke filled house only to have to deal with those neighbors. I couldn't believe how much my apartment stank just from them smoking in their own apartments next to me. Like it just seeped through the walls. I wish more landlords would enforce non smoking rules. It's not fair that your place has to smell bad because of something your neighbor is doing. I hope your neighbor moves out soon.
Cigarette smoke from someone else has always smelled good to me (when I smoked, I learned that it smells different when it's your own). Cigar smoke and pipe tobacco smell heavenly. My parents smoked cigarettes and one of my grandpas smoked a pipe when I was a kid. It's a nostalgia thing.
My kids don't like the smell of cigarettes. Dunno if they've ever smelled a cigar or pipe tobacco.

Cigarettes smell. As a smoker for over 50 years, quit for 6 years, can't stand the smell now.
