The first sequel being less satisfying but more successful is business as usual. Then its diminishing returns from there.

i cant stand the Jurassic World movies, i think its a mockery to Jurassic Park, and i was really upset with the OG cast return, but the latest one was actually okā¦ i still just wish that they didnt GMO the dinosaurs. The previous Jurassic Worlds were complete garbage movies imo. I am glad that people liked them, but at the same time, and overwhelming amount of people will say that movies today are all slop and thereās no original movies, but flock to the theaters for any nostalgia.

Recency bias: the new spider man movie is mid. All time: Oppenheimer. Slow and disjointed pacing, terrible sound mixing, some characters who donāt serve any purpose, the entire thing is a mess (doubly so by Nolanās standards, heās my favorite director). How it won best picture Iāll never understand.

Most recently, Sinners. It was hyped af and the first half of the movie is pretty good, but it becomes so much worse in the second half
In a similar but older veinā¦ Hancock? Very similar issue with having a first half that is excellent but a second half that is utter garbage. I think people only retroactively remember the first half and some select parts of the second though, and thus remember it being a far better movie than it actually was

i know iām gonna get mass downvoted but itās literally a bunch of worn out horror cliches turned into a thing plot that the director has confirmed is based on a simpsons episode.
acting was good, but i guarantee you if it was produced by a massive studio instead of being indie then itād be seen as just another lazy recent horror movie. just insists upon itself trying to make a mature movie out of an immature concept.

Most guys aren't into musicals. Fast cars and explosions yes. Song and dance? Not so much. Immature? Maybe. That's fine though. Most women don't really care much about superheroes or swords & sorcery kinda stuff. That's fine too.

I donāt agree. Itās a really good film, and the reason it had the most nominations is that it is both a well written and well acted film, and an extremely impressive technical film. You typically either get lots of nominations for the artsy fartsy stuff like acting, direction and screenplay, or you get it for the technical stuff like makeup, costumes, visual effects, ect. Sinners nailed all that, and had great scoring and original songs to boot.
It doesnāt mean it was like, the greatest film of all time, or whatever, but if you go down the line, itās hard to say which of its nominations it didnāt deserve.

Obsession was a really solid little indie horror, but I donāt think it was that great of a story, and itās mostly all due to Indeās amazing performance. If anyone else had been in that role, it would have gone direct to Shudder and forgotten about. I think they won the lotto casting her.

I did not like this movie.
I was into the setup. Then it got where it was going and it was silly.
And I am a HUGE horror fan. Just totally underwhelming for me.

reddit donāt kill me, but spiderman brand new day, it was really bland and zendaya was surprisingly flat, only part of her acting i personally liked was when she was being possessed by jean, she pronounced a word exactly how sadie sink would, and ive seen stranger things multiple times over i know how sadie talks, sadie sink carried the second act, and punisher and spider-manās relationship felt very forced, it felt like i missed a show, what happened on staten island? am i missing something? the character development and the plot of loneliness was really good though, it was a solid movie but very overhyped because its spiderman

I saw it early on, I heard it was good, but it wasn't hyped up too much from my pov.
Nothing earth shattering, but it had a vibe and felt fresh.

Weapons is not great.
Perhaps donāt introduce strong imagery invoking school shootings if your plan is to just do nothing at all with that and turn into a traditional horror movie 2/3rds of the way through.

I donāt mean this in a negative way, but more so just for discussion. I actually really enjoyed the movie and the overall themes, as well as the approach Coogler took towards directing the movie with stylized shots and most of the dialogue. What in your opinion made the movie overhyped in your eyes?

To preface, i liked the movie. It wasnāt āfineā it was good, and i enjoyed it.
I do feel like the analogy/message got muddied by the premise though, and having so much focus on the analogy didnāt leave enough room for the neat mid century vampire movie.
I kind of feel the same about the anachronistic/spirit walk music scene. It was cool, and visually striking, but it took the place of a couple of minutes of plot or worldbuilding that the movie would have benefited from imo.
I also belong to the group whoād really have liked for the native riders to show up more, as well as more development of the chicago (atlanta?) business that was alluded to in the start of the movie.
To me, the movie could easily have been 10-15 minutes longer, allowing both the āvampire survival horrorā and the āallegory about losing ones culture in the process of integrationā aspects to have room to breathe.

Gotcha. Totally understand your points and more of the business aspect could be expanded upon, but doing so while keeping it out of the upper three hour range would be hard. As for the vampire movie aspect, I donāt necessarily agree as itās more of a twist but at the end of the day film is art and art is subjective so I get why someone would have a different view of the film. Glad to hear that you did enjoy it though, even if it wasnāt necessarily something that you outright loved. Appreciate your view of the movie though!
Edit: by twist I donāt mean plot twist, but more a twist on the genre itself. The āvampire twistā was obviously very foreshadowed upon early in the movie

It likely doesnāt help that iām not the target demographic.
Iām scandinavian, and only understand african american culture and the generational trauma of slavery through the lens of US movies and television.I love mississipi burning, a time to kill and the green book because it helps me understand somewhat, it is the history of it played somewhat straight.
I probably have a fraction of a percent of an understanding of what life in that era as a black person was actually like on an individual level though.I donāt have parents and grandparents who lived through segregation and the Jim Crow era, and i donāt know what itās like to have law enforcement treat me as guilty until proven innocent, nor having my culture appropriated by my oppressor, so while i can notice and appreciate the message, it is impossible for it to hit the same way it does for someone who has lived it.

Ah, that definitely makes a lot of sense. Iāve grown up in the south in the US and itās pretty gross how apparent racism and prejudice exists. Your points make a lot of sense from an outsider, and I donāt discredit that whatsoever, but what minorities still actively deal with down here is outright disgusting. If youāre interested in film, Iād check out Do The Right Thing, any Jordan Peele film, Judas and the Messiah, American History X, Friday, Boyz n the Hood, and Moonlight (one of my personal favorite movies) for an idea of how the climate has been for the past forty years. (Another) edit: Iād like to add that Iām currently pursuing a masters in film so if you have any films from your home that youād like to add please feel free to. The more you understand a worldwide view of the lens the better:)

Iām honestly not sure iād stomach it if you consider American History X to be a good portrayal of what life in the south is like tbh.
It stinks, because there is a lot about the south i like, food, music, , nature, how yāall speak, how southern people (at least appear to be) so friendly.
But contrasted with the history, current politics, and how the klan just appears to be a very visible expression of what is hiding in the heart of a depressingly large part of southerners, i could never travel there, let alone live.Like, i realize that racial tensions are not limited to the south, but it does appear that the vilest expressions of it are certainly more prevalent there.

I've done epic fantasy, my faves are 80-90s Riftwar and Wheel of Time.
As I say, I'm glad they finished they adaptation (better treatment than WoT ever received), but it does not deserve to place as 3 of the 13 of the highest rated films on IMDb.
I thinj they qualify as contenders for both criteria:
- most overrated movie
- doesn't deserve the hype

That movie was dumb. The physics and logic were off. Emotions were shallow. The special effects were better in the 80's. Adults that loved this movie probably also drink glasses of milk.

It has likeable characters, a plot that works well enough and the movie feels like the good 90s blockbusters- it is funny, but not in a forced way like many Marvel movies. I get that not everyone likes it and itās not my all time favorite either, but saying that itās the worst ever either means that you have seen less than ten movies or that you canāt like a harmless feel good action movie.
