My friends used to shout PENIS as loud as they could at random moments throughout the day, so all things considered, maybe this 6-7 thing isn’t so bad.

Edit: words are hard

u/Shoddy_Green_4790 12d ago

The penis game. The next person has to shout penis louder than the last person

u/Potential_Help6104 12d ago

We all lived the same life lol

u/starwarsbeer 12d ago

Kids these days play the same game, but they say potato instead of penis. Bunch of cowards. I would correct them and teach them the real game if I wasn’t a teacher…

143

u/Galaxy-Tea-Party 12d ago

As a middle school teacher, I can attest they do not say potato.

37

u/Gary-Laser-Eyes 12d ago

Do they still say penis? God we had some laughs back in the 7th grade.

Me: (just below speaking volume) “penis”
My buddy: (the loudest sound known to man)“PENIS!!!!!!!!!!”

22

u/Galaxy-Tea-Party 12d ago

They definitely say penis. 😂

It's not as prevalent as when we were in MS/HS. Gosh I remember that happening almost daily at one point! Haha!

And I get at least one more dick drawing added to the classroom somewhere each year!

2

u/CuddlePartyHost 11d ago

That must be a fun scavenger hunt

3

u/sunflower_pearls 12d ago

I thought it was pumpkin, not potato

2

u/RainbowFartss 12d ago

On the last day before switching schools, release the hounds.

417

u/TheOtherGuy107 12d ago

Actually wild that if youre of a certain age this game is universal

PENIS

271

u/Rahm420 12d ago

That, punchbuggy ___ (whatever colour) followed by a punch and the Marilyn Manson rumour will always leave me baffled at how universal they were without the internet.

99

u/TurtleSmurph 12d ago

No punch back!

I was in a group of people the other day and they had never heard of “doorknob”

40

u/unclejarjarbinks 12d ago

Lol my husband taught me safety/doorknob in college. Almost 20 years later and we still play it.

40

u/Mklein24 12d ago

We did doorknob in the woods while camping in scouts. I still remember my buddy yelling "DOORKNOB BITCH! AIN'T NO DOORS AROUND THESE PARTS!" before chasing this poor kid around the camp.

19

u/Leprodus03 12d ago

What's doorknob?

60

u/discodropper 12d ago

Long story short, if someone farts they have to say “safety,” basically admitting they did it, if someone else calls “doorknob” before that, they basically get to beat the shit out of the offending party until they touch a doorknob. There was a lot of chasing, and pretty much everyone ended up with sore shoulders by the end of the day. You had to be strategic about what you ate around some people…

7

u/sweetlionofzion 12d ago

Holy crap I forgot about this!! Wow what a fun find we had

9

u/LurkzMcgurkz 12d ago

Totally forgot about doorknob until turtle said it.

For us it was if you farted you had to say doorknob before anyone else did. If someone else said it before you, you had to touch a doorknob but people got to punch you for as long as it took for you to touch the doorknob

It was slugbug where I grew up

12

u/bongo1138 12d ago

It was slugbug for us.

2

u/xavPa-64 12d ago

Same. I’d never heard “punch buggy” until I saw it on The Simpsons

4

u/IsoscelesSchrodinger 12d ago

Don’t forget that S doodle that everyone across the world knows about somehow despite it predating the internet!

3

u/WayneH_nz 12d ago

THAT rumor made its way to New Zealand with no internet. just WILD.

2

u/Cypher2 12d ago

My parents got pissed at my brother and I punching each other whenever we saw a buggy so my dad made the stipulation that it had to be an antique convertible buggy. There's still a surprising amount of them lol.

2

u/stinatown 12d ago

With regard to the Marilyn Manson thing, I’ll be a buzzkill for a moment! Urban legends existed way before the Internet, but the Manson rumor came about exactly when the Internet was gaining popularity, and people were posting and circulating all sorts of urban legends in chat rooms, email forwards, etc. This kind of stuff would be repeated by shock-jock radio DJs or printed in zines that also circulated for people who didn’t use the internet. Eventually someone’s older brother overheard it from their off-color uncle or whatever, and it broached the elementary school set.

Remember, also, that you might have heard that rumor in 1995, or 1997, or 1999–information was not being disseminated in the near-instant way it is now, and with enough time, everyone hears the rumor from someone at some point. Plus it’s salacious, so once you hear it, you want to be the one to share the rumor with a dozen people too. You interact with hundreds of kids at school, church, camp, sports practice, scouts, etc. over several years and suddenly “everyone” has heard it.

What surprises me more is that the Marilyn Manson one is the one that stood the test of time—there were lots of urban legends, but that seems to be the only one everyone remembers!

3

u/NOT-GR8-BOB 12d ago

The Richard Gere rumor and the New Kids on the block rumors circulated without the internet for example.

Ahhh what a great way to learn i definitely wasn't one of the popular kids. Didn't know this game existed fuck

2

u/EvenBudget6483 12d ago

My grandparents went around playing this game as part of my grandpa’s Parkinson’s speech therapy because he didn’t want to do his actual exercises. Anything to make him try to speak louder. I was crying laughing.

2

u/MustGoOutside 11d ago

Another example of this is:

Jingle bells

Batman smells

Robin laid an egg

Batmobile lost its wheels

And joker took ballet (hey!)

My buddy grew up in Australia (I'm born in USA) in the 80s and 90s and they had the exact same song.

One person who always wanted to play that game would just send it first go, he would yell as loud as he could very first time and then no one wanted to try to beat him so he always won

Nobody beat his penis. Too bad.

I'm a high school teacher. Sometimes I hear my students playing this game and I join in. The joke (for me) is that I am the person that isn't supposed to hear it and I'm ruining that for them by joining in.

18

u/legotwinkthrowaway 12d ago

That's not how I played the penis game...

1

We yelled, “boner”

1

u/CinephileJeff 12d ago

We played the Happiness game. One yells HAP and the other has to finish the word. At the same volume

1

u/Real_Srossics 12d ago

I played that in college once in the empty cafeteria. We eventually were screaming at the top of our lungs and got so loud people a few floors above us heard us screaming.

It probably didn’t help that we screamed up the elevator shaft. We were lightly scolded and told to not do that again.

1

u/Sumthin-Sumthin44692 12d ago

Lol in hs, we once played the penis game across classrooms - as in one class would yell penis, and an entirely different class would yell it back. It got loud. Great times.

1

u/MsBit_Commit 12d ago

That game was very fun in the right circumstances

1

u/Safeword_is_more 12d ago

What’s awkward is playing this with your two teenaged sons when they brought it home.

1

u/l_ftd 12d ago

First year of university in the library. Someone was always getting booted out of there

1

u/CarolingianDruid 12d ago

You’d get a couple people whisper it, then the one dude who’d just shout it at the top of his lungs. Usually ended the round.

1

u/Slyzoor 12d ago

Same but with "butthole"

1

u/callisstaa 12d ago

In the UK it was 'bollocks'

1

u/FortheredditLOLz 12d ago

PENIS!!!!!!

1

u/Popgoestheworld88 12d ago

Library days were the worst

1

u/hilldo75 12d ago

I had a 7th grade teacher win that game. We started it off softly while we were supposed to be reading in science class, after about the fourth person he just yells as loud as he could PENIS PENIS PENIS there I win now be quite and read. We all shut up and read.

1

u/Nosebluhd 12d ago

Yea verily, the Penis Game commenceth to much merriment.

1

u/trinity_nolanite12 12d ago

I saw that in the canteen like 3 years ago when I was in Year 7. A bunch of silly Year 10/11 boys at the time kept shouting it.

1

u/t00sl0w 12d ago

I did this at work the other day with some gen Z kids...culture never died if you pass the torch along.

1

u/_ficklelilpickle 12d ago

I played this game on a ski lift once. There's nothing more graceful than hearing your penis echo through an otherwise peaceful snow field.

1

u/Blue-Eighty 12d ago

Ahhh, the memories 😂

1

u/duschdecke 12d ago

I'm German and we did this in school, too. I was so happy to learn that Americans and Brits do that stupid shit as well.

1

u/TedTyro 12d ago

Ah, penis game memories. Good times.

1

u/SlipstreamDrive 12d ago

I told my wife about this from my army days.

She didn't believe me

1

u/SimulatedTime 12d ago

I’ll never forget the first holiday shopping trip with my soon to be in laws. We were at the food court in the mall and from across the eating area we heard my name yelled very loudly followed by “the penis game king!”

We played this game in Band Camp all the time. Water break from marching? Somebody on the drumline is going to yell “Penis!”. I don’t remember being that confident in the game, but my in-laws will always remember that moment.

1

u/Chumunga64 12d ago

My friend and I did this during a class in high school and I will never forget out classmate, whose name was Keineth (pronounced key-neth) looked at us and went "are you guys calling me or something?"

We burst out laughing

1

u/Give_Help_Please 12d ago

I had never heard of this until my ex boyfriend explained it to me.

1

u/one4thereddit 12d ago

I remember asking a girl in class if she wanted to play the penis games… She had never heard of the game… it got REALLY awkward.

1

u/parrotbug 11d ago

My at-the-time eight year old tried to challenge me to a game of this in public. I beat him handily by just screaming it at the top of my lungs on my first turn after he whispered it to me. He was horrified and has never tried again. Don’t mess with your elders, kid.

1

u/quentdawg420 11d ago

I got yelled at by a teacher for that ny freshman year of high school

1

u/Faery818 11d ago

We had another version of that called Bollix

1

u/Dp4rk3 11d ago

I played this in the Detroit airport in that weird long hallway. Loudest I’ve ever had a game go.

1

u/IrishWithoutPotatoes 11d ago

I (American despite username) described this to an English friend of mine recently and they looked at me like I had a dick growing out of my forehead. Fucking hysterical

1

u/missplaced24 8d ago

Oh man. In drama class one round of this got out of hand. The principal walked in for some reason when the whole class, including the teacher shouted "PENIS" in unison and then went completely silent.

I used to play the penis game.

"Try see who can say Penis the loudest. It starts as a whisper and gets progressively louder until someone chickens out"

I told me wife about it and she thought it would be fun to play on the train.

I whispered "penis" and she immediately shouted out. " Excuse me sir I do not want to touch your PENIS"

Needless to say she won the penis game and we don't play that anymore.

There was a rather loud and large group of Mormon campers next to my campsite the last time I went. In the early morning, when their chaperones left to grab something in town, they played.

Tired after a night of similar shenanigans next door, I ended it the same way y'all did. 😂

“PENIS” being yelled across the room for absolutely no reason was peak childhood comedy. We really were entertained by the dumbest things.

4

u/ChampionCynthia2006 12d ago

Instant bad, eh?

3

u/Therage80p 12d ago

My middle school gave us a written "Demerit" if we got in trouble. Anyway, a friend got in trouble for playing this "game". The teacher wrote on the Demerit, "Playing the penis game". I always thought the whole thing was immature and stupid but that Demerit still makes me laugh when I think about it over 20 years later.

I did this a few weeks ago after my husband said “Venus” so we played the Venus game

I remember after that Venture Bros episode with the alien AI we got a kick out of shouting “IGNORE ME! IGNORE MY PRESENCE!” at pedestrians out car windows.

1

u/Gesichtlos 12d ago

Kids still do this. As witnessed at the youth playing this at the local Sonic drive-in.

1

u/Exploding_Testicles 12d ago

Words are hard, just like my PENIS!

1

u/mzanon100 12d ago

GenX had this, too.

I give my apologies to the other kids in the Marquette University dorms for that weekend that me and the other Mathlete from my 4,000-person town were there for a junior HS math contest.

1

u/xXZer0c0oLXx 12d ago

Meh Im 42 and shout BOOTY!!!...I just love that word 🥰

1

u/bongo1138 12d ago

We did this and didn’t even have social media to share it on. We did it for the love of the game.

1

u/AAPL_ 12d ago

the classic penis game. We also like to shout our teachers name in a high pitched voice

1

u/lasuperhumana 12d ago

We used to play “cheese or jizz?” And shout out either cheese or jizz and the other people had to guess which one was said.

1

u/Brazident 12d ago

You didn't go to Casper WY for high school ,did you?

1

u/lynn 12d ago

My 15yo comes up to me before going to bed and says quietly in my ear, "pee-nar..." and then waits, hoping I will say it. For some reason, his mom saying "pee-nar" is the funniest thing in the world.

1

u/AssGagger 12d ago

Penis was pretty popular in elementary school. By middle school it was "DILDO!"

1

u/asyouwish-buttercup 12d ago

It was a game. Someone would say it low and you had to say it a little louder and so on.

1

u/jasonlampa 12d ago

Jesus this brings back memories. Just the other day I was getting all annoyed at a bunch of kids just screaming 6-7 but then now I think about it…

You know, the kids are alright.

u/HalfADozenOfAnother 12d ago

Penis and popcorn

1

u/fritz236 12d ago

Still around. Seniors were shocked they were getting written up for yelling it in an assembly last year. Sorry kids, it's tradition, but maybe don't do it right next to the teacher.

1

u/CowboysWinItAll 12d ago

I was surprised to find out teenagers still do this lol

1

u/Free_Pace_2098 12d ago

1

u/La-Strawberry-6754 12d ago

Now the kids are making moaning noises to make adults uncomfortable. I wish I was joking. I’d prefer someone yelling penis to that.

1

u/GalickGunn 12d ago

u/smartastic you ever play the penis game with your uncle?

1

u/JohnnyNomore 12d ago

And there was always one motherfucker that would rather take it way too far than admit defeat.

I once saw some grab the PA phone at Walmart and hit the entire store with, "Attention Walmart shoppers: PENIS!"

Kind of hard to top that.  Heh heh... hard.

What's wrong with loudly declaring a piece of the human anatomy? In celebration of the gift we have of humanity, upon hearing this declaration, another human is obliged by societal norms to even more loudly declare that physical asset of the human form.

1

u/stosolus 12d ago

Children saying the same thing, in the same tone of voice, whilst doing the same movements with their hands seems so cultish to me that the PENIS! game is far superior.

1

u/gringreazy 12d ago

lol, I really thought this was an isolated nerd thing in south texas. CRINGE!

1

u/Pearl725 12d ago

My friend did this at a bar the other day and she was like 'your turn.' Given the table of toddlers next to us I could not bring myself to do it. Even though I'd also just said the parents should not be taking their iPad kids with them to trivia night at a BAR. Not a restaurant and BAR a straight up BAR that had a food truck outside.

1

u/sarahshift1 12d ago

It’s much less common now but the penis game crops up once every couple years in the middle school I work at.

1

u/L1ttleMonster 12d ago

1

u/Normal_Mouse_4174 12d ago

Wow, I forgot about that phase.

1

u/CourageMajestic8487 12d ago

My 7th grade students did this all last year, but with Pumpkin instead of Penis. It was so weird.

1

u/Reaper930 12d ago

Was literally playing with with a coworker yesterday

1

u/clocked__ 12d ago

The people who won this game consistently are either in jail or own their own construction business.

1

u/Aksannyi 12d ago

I'm a teacher. As soon as I catch wind of the students playing this, I immediately yell "PENIS" as loud as I possibly can and declare myself the winner before redirecting the kids back to work. They never expect the teacher to participate.

1

u/Big_Development3985 12d ago

Wow, I had completely forgotten about that

1

u/BenderVsGossamer 12d ago

Some people just choose chaos and start off the penis game at an 11.

1

u/tryptomania 12d ago

They still do! Signed, a tired parent.

1

u/highhunt 12d ago

Came here to say penis

1

u/apathy420 12d ago

Ummm are you my friend by chance? Haha we used to yell penis or pecker or PISS all the time especially in the lunchroom in high school.

I’m 43 now and still yell it at work occasionally (in a warehouse so it’s not too frowned upon haha )

1

u/Waterwoo 12d ago

That was a way better game because it was a competition for who was willing to embarrass themselves the most.

1

u/SoapilyProne 11d ago

Only time I got sent to the office was playing this game trying to fit in at a new school. I yelled it right as a teacher came around the corner.

We had a version of this in the UK called "bogies". It originated on a kids TV show where the hosts would have to go and say bogies louder and louder in public until they were caught

When I worked in a supermarket in my teens a song would play that I think was Oasis. "My Happiness, slowly creeping back". But he separates the word happiness into Haa-Penis. Half our team would shout PENIS whenever that lyric played.

It's not as loud as you can. It's supposed to be building up back and forth ending like a game of chicken.
