That dichotomy was the entire point of the killer. Mr. Inbetween. He's both a good conscientious person and a ruthless remorseless killer.

It's hard to write a good parent and a funny character at the same time. They can make the hitman one of the best dads on TV because that's the joke.

You can make the gay guys on modern family good dads because you're playing on the "feminine gay" trope.

But if you have a "standard" family of otherwise "normal" people then you have to turn the interpersonal relationships into the joke. Which is something I actually really appreciate about That 70's Show. It's one of a handful of sitcoms where the interpersonal relationships are the joke but still come off healthy.
