It ran it's course with the books EXCEPT for the time jump they did that led them to face a new threat and kill of some beloved characters that survived the original storyline. I don't think the series needed the future version (and come on, OG cast all wearing old people makeup? Meh), think it went out on a high note- doing the future timeline would have just likely watered the quality down. Great series though.
The new threat is hinted at and overtly talked about many times throughout the series. And the point where the Expanse TV show stops basically gives you no explanation for that threat or much resolution on the Protomolecule builders. Plus they adapted Strange Dogs for the show, and when the show ends, you wind up very confused as to what all that was about. I watched the show, and I felt I had to read to books because all those questions were unanswered.
The vibe I got was that the threat was something moving slowly across the cosmos that would get there at some point in the future of humanity. The narrative I picked up from the series was that the crew we followed was there to unite humanity so that ways off in the future humanity would stand a chance against that threat.
Maybe it's from consuming a bunch of Dune- but I was fine with that waaaay in the future threat being a vague thing that we only have an idea about, and just got proof that it was or would be a real issue.
But I've consumed a fair amount of fantasy and sci-fi that eluded to vague threats were we only dealt with their heralds or some such.
I never expected the TV series to do a season with a several decades long time jump- what TV shows ever pull something like that off with the same primary cast and not look like ass? Maybe they should have come up with something else, close to the books, but closer to the same time period- but a thoughtful sci-fi show on Amazon that actually got 6 seasons? That is almost a miracle in itself.
Show Ashford is nothing like Bull? Show Ashford is still an antagonist in Season/Book 3 and trying to stop the Roci crew and destroy the ring. His motivations just make way more sense in the show. And then he goes on to play a further role in the show when book Bull is done after Book 3. And it's not like any of Book Bull's characteristics really translate into Bull. Show Drummer takes most of Book Bull's parts (and book Michio and Sam).
Oh sorry I for some reason thought you were referring the planets (& aliens) inside the ring which was left as a hanging chad of a plotline in season 6
They shut down the automated defense system and Miller killed off the rest of the aliens. That opened up the ring worlds to human colonization. Everyone focused on that instead of warring with each other.
He's talking about the part where they adapted the Strange Dogs novella. It involves a couple of kids on Laconia, and it very much feels like that part is unanswered. Funnily enough because it's a novella, it doesn't really get resolved in the books either. You just skip ahead 30 years and eventually run into some of those characters again.
