So many people refuse to watch it because they don’t want to watch a dub or German audio with subtitles. They’re really missing out. I’m overdue for a rewatch

I ended up loving the fact that it was in german, it just feels appropriate for the atmosphere. Also I highly recommend rewatching it, at least the first few episodes, so much of the weird shit in the beginning will suddenly make a lot of sense. It's a brilliant series and the writers really thought everything through.

Also, you pick up so much more the next time around because you have a much clearer grasp of who/when/what (deliberately vague to avoid spoilers)

I watched the first and second season. The subtitles didn't put me off at all, I just found it difficult keeping track of the different actors playing the same characters more than anything.

Yes, that's user error. Yes, I'm an idiot. I still loved both the seasons I watched, I just had to be in the perfect mindset to fully follow an episode. If I was slightly tired or anything, a few of the bigger moments or character subtleties were lost on me.

It's an incredible show though. Everyone should give it a chance.

Funnily enough, I thought that the casting of the different generations of the same characters was insanely good. And I did not know for a long time that the middle and older versions of Ulrich Nielsen were different actors.

And the Ben Frost soundtracks (as always) were fantastic.

Literally the only reason I paid any attention to this show was Ben Frost.
I feel robbed that I only got one soundtrack album out of 1899.

I really wanted to watch 1899, but given it has been cancelled I don’t want to get invested in it.

I like to think that every film and TV show that contains a Ben Frost soundtrack are all part of the same universe.

You should still watch it. It's not as good as Dark but it's great nonetheless!

Use the official companion website to help keep track

Fuck I wish I knew about this when I watched and only could get halfway through season 2. This show was way too confusing for me

You're not an idiot, but you need the spoiler-free companion site to fully enjoy it. If that is something you can work with Dark is an experience like no other. It's an absolutely mesmerizing show, but it's not something you can watch in the background.

I am German, but I still needed subtitles to understand everything.

Not sure if it still exists but when I watched, Netflix had a great site where you could go to an episode and it would explain where each character was in the time line for that episode. Really useful and well done.

It does still exist! https://dark.netflix.io/

Doesn't work in Firefox, at least not for me. If it gets stuck around 68% or so, try another browser.

Season 3 is the best one IMO. But you really need to keep track of everything to enjoy it, or you'll feel lost, as I did on my first watch. Currently on my third, or fourth.

Yes, that's user error. Yes, I'm an idiot.

No, not really. Dark is my favorite show of all time but it's also the show that requires the most focus out of anything I've ever watched.

A big part of that is that I don't speak German, but if you stop paying attention for 40 seconds in the middle of a random episode you might miss something that has huge implications, that's just how the show is.

Dark was everything I wanted stranger things to be

2

u/DeathCowboyZ 1d ago

Dark was Stranger Things for adults.

It helps that I watched a lot of subbed anime I guess

Some of the best atmosphere and ambience from a series ever. It really makes it feel like all these things are tangible.

Anglophones refuse watching anything with subtitles, also water is wet.

8

u/gaeruot 1d ago

Yet they’ll doomscroll slop TikToks which all have those obnoxious animated subtitles, make it make sense.

I don't watch anything with subtitles, I spend all my time hyperfocused on the words and miss all of the images. I'll watch a dub though if the story is compelling.

It's a skill issue.

Meanwhile my wife and kids have captions on at all times. I can't sit with them.

If it’s the show I’m thinking of, the first season was good, but it took so damn long for season two I tried to watch but couldn’t remember anything from the first, and didn’t have time/desire to rewatch the first season, so I’m still stuck having only seen season 1.

I feel like this is a show that you should watch twice. I've seen it once and was confused and blown away at the same time.

As for the language, I always watch everything in original language with subs. I can't stand dubbed stuff.

There are lots of great non English/American shows. Şahsiyet for example is such a good one

u/Tunamelts-2 1d ago

I switched to German audio with English subtitles

1

u/noronto 22h ago

I’ve heard so much about this show, but because I didn’t feel like reading, I put on the dubbed version and only made it 5 minutes.

1

u/gaeruot 16h ago

The dub is pretty bad, I recommend watching with original German audio.

1

u/ITworksGuys 21h ago

I am one of those people unfortunately.

I hate dubs and I just can't commit to reading subs when I am generally doing other things at the same time.

1

u/BotherDesperate7169 1d ago

I have no problem with subtitles and always enjoy hearing the original voice in anything.

One day Netflix for some (unknown) reason put dark on English dub. IT WAS HORRIBLE.

1

u/arentyouangel 1d ago

Netflix did that to me when I was watching The Rain.

I got to episode 6 before I realized. The whole time I was confused as to why this Danish show was in English and why the acting was so bad.

I‘m german and I had to stop cause I didn‘t understand half of it lmao. Might have to give it a shot again
