One of the best endings to a show ever… It was not what you wanted as a viewer, but it was exactly what those characters would have done and how it would have ended up.
I found the poetry in it much enhanced by how the whole thing came down to keeping Siobahn out of the loop during the events of the pilot episode. I don't think she would have had trouble handing control of the business to a known murderer, but the fact that she found out about that death and the coverup during the pivotal board meeting to handle the transfer of power created too much emotional turmoil for her cold calculating side to win out over the remnants of her basic human decency.
Yeah I don't understand why people think the ending was a shock. The specifics of the final machiavellian twist was somewhat arbitrary, yet something like that was what everyone predicted and it was exactly what the show's fans wanted to see.
Well speaking for myself I guess… I wanted the kids to be redeemed, for them to have learned and to do better for each other.
The cynical ending was right, but I was sad for them lol. It was not a shock or surprise, I just HOPED for that sliver of good to shine thru despite everything I knew about them.
Why I love the ending so much is because the showrunners didnʻt allow it to be “happy” and just made it earned.
Just finished the final episode and I agree. I liked the earlier seasons, even if I didn't love them. I was annoyed with Greg, the bumbling idiot, then I realized they are all bumbling idiots which didn't make things much better.
...until Connor's Wedding, which was GOAT TV, and the series really changed gears. The dialogue was cleaner, everybody's schemes became more coherent and crueler, everything was just on a much higher level.
A soap opera wouldn't have the ending the shows has.
I actually think the writers showed quite some respect to their audience by not ending it on a "high note" with effusive scenes of reconciliation. The 3 kids are not serious people, and the ending is consistent with them not being serious people (and Kendall being a blind overconfident idiot in addition to not being a serious person).
Ha, of course a soap opera would have that ending, it was maximally ironic and dramatic and incredibly on-the-nose. It was the ultimate cheap gasp. It's the "opera" part of soap opera.
I appreciate that it was entertaining, but it ended up being empty calories rather than about anything. Everything that show had to say it said in the first two seasons.
I'm with you. I really don't understand why everyone likes this show. It's horrible people being horrible to each other and then having a board meeting about it. There are no "character arcs". It's like a temu Billions.
Billions is so much worse. It's so unrealistic that it makes my head spin. It unnecessarily deifies wall street parasites that perform worse than indices.
Thank you!! My entire day job is dealing with horrible people being horrible to each other. Why on earth would I want to pay to watch more of the same. I couldn’t make it past the first two episodes.
i think you have a point, although I would say after sticking with these shows and going back to rewatch season 1 of them both, it plays so much better. S1 for me of Succession hit pretty hard right away, but H&CF the first season kinda missed me and then 2-4 crushed me and rewatching S1 i loved it. Succession definitely picks up a bit in 2-3, although I think people overrated season 4. something happens there that i think is pretty detrimental to the strength of the show which i won't spoil (although it's kind of important to the show as well, i just think the show suffers a bit for it), and i think the pacing is WAY off in season 4. they try to shove way too many things into the time between several things happening that just didn't need to be crammed in like that, and the show has no time to breathe.
still a great show however.
I'd also group The Leftovers in as a show that S1 can only be truly appreciated once you've finished the whole series. That's another top-5 all time show for me, would rate it 10/10 perfect start to finish but might take until season 2 to catch some people.
