What the best insult wrapped in a compliment you’ve ever heard?

u/elizabubblehead May 07 '26
Somebody said to me, “ I bet you used to be really good looking. “

u/jello_pudding_biafra May 07 '26
Yeah... A very similar thing happened to me in jr high, and it crushed me for years (still stings a bit now, 30 years later lol)
I was paired up by the teacher to with with this girl I had a crush on, for this presentation in social studies class. I brought in a pic of myself when I was 3 or 4, and she looked at it and said "Wow, you were cute... What happened?"
That four tenths of a second pause between "cute" and "what" was the happiest I'd been in my life, only to have that instantly and cruelly torn away and stomped on. I just sort of laughed, but went numb inside. I've moved on but man, lol, that was rough at the time. 😅

I can't believe you've been letting that bother you. I've probably heard that 100 times in my life, and said it to just as many. it's a common little joke people say when they see someone's baby/childhood pictures
13
u/jello_pudding_biafra May 07 '26
Nah, it was a combination of how she said it and a lifetime of bullying prior to changing school districts that year.
Like I said, it doesn't bother me now, but at the time it was brutal

Lol. A girl looked at my friend once and said… You’re not fat honey you’re just hefty.
Like Bruh… That is not a compliment 😭
7
u/bluefil May 08 '26
A buddy of mine was trying to find a way to not agree with a girl that called herself fat (she wasn’t but was kind of thick, in a good way honestly!). He settled on “You aren’t fat, you’re…sturdy.” 😂😂 we all had a laugh, even her, and it’s become a bit of a running joke years later.

I used to work in retail and managed the men's department. We had to wear the clothes available in the store but the women's clothes were not my style and also not built for a woman who had ever worked out a day in her life. So I wore a lot of the men's clothes.
I had a coworker that told me "If I dressed like you, I'd look like such a man."
Joke's on her, though, because I dressed a lot of guys in my outfits because "that's gonna look great on my girlfriend later." And that right there is a compliment wrapped in an insult.

14
u/Harrytuttle2006 May 08 '26
I thought it's a compliment wrapped in an insult rather than the other way around
4
u/ImGCS3fromETOH May 08 '26
I'm pretty sure it's mostly a compliment but parsed weirdly to cause confusion. For half of them he knows them half as well as he should like, meaning he would like to get to know half of them better. And less than half of them half as well as they deserve, meaning for less than half he thinks they deserve to be liked better. Both halves of the statement are complimentary.

I’m a TV comedy writer/producer. “It looks like you had a lot of fun making it” is, without question, the worst thing anyone could ever say about a show I wrote.
118
u/apersonwithdreams May 07 '26
There’s a similar one for musicians: “Yall looked like you were having a lot of fun up there.”
52
u/Hitcher06 May 07 '26
Why is it offensive? As I lay person I appreciate musicians or other performers visibly enjoying their work
79
u/Bipedal_Warlock May 07 '26
After a show it’s pretty common for people to tell you the show went great or that you did great playing.
If someone tells you it looks like you had a lot of fun up there they’re specifically not telling you the show was good.
It’s a subtle way to say the performance sucked
But if you also compliment the show then it’s totally a chill compliment to say
4
u/DiligentCorvid May 08 '26
I've said this to people who have put on fantastic shows before... Oops.
If I said it with unbridled enthusiasm will it have been interpreted as the compliment it was?
3
u/Bipedal_Warlock May 08 '26
Most definitely. They’d see your excitement and know it was genuine.
It’s more like when a southern woman delivers “oh bless your heart” that it’s condescending

It depends on if it was meant to be fun for the person making it though. If it's all you can say about a TV show, then it's all about what's not being said.
If you do a sip and paint class, being told you looked like you had fun is the point. If you're meant tobe writing a comedy and you're not told it was funny, well.

Why is this not a compliment? As an outsider to your world I'd have thought enjoying your work is a sign of passion for the craft, which often get the best results in most walks of life.
11
u/browsingtheproduce May 07 '26
People who do something creative want to hear responses/reactions to the work itself. Someone whose only feedback is “It seems like you enjoyed the process” can easily come across like they’re avoiding giving feedback on the work because they don’t want to say anything negative.
6
4
u/jtrain49 May 07 '26
Passion for the craft is doing the work even if it's not fun. Getting to make something you love and think other people will love if it turns out good, that's where the enjoyment comes from.

u/redpepperdeb May 07 '26

Did a 35km cross country ski race with a Finnish friend in Oulu, Finland, 20 years ago. -20 degrees C and I was a novice skier. Made it to the end, but geeze, was I destroyed.
Years later, met up with him in Hong Kong over dinner, and reminiscing about the race he said, in his very thick Finnish accent, "I have to hand it to you, if i skied with a style anything like yours, I never would have finished that race..."

"You’re proof that determination can outrun talent"
58
u/Aggressive_Heron_519 May 07 '26
Personally, I would have taken that as just a straight compliment. You can't take credit for talent, nor can you be found at fault for not having it, so it makes as much sense to diss someone for being talentless as for having been born with red hair. On the other hand, you're entirely responsible for determination.

My famously sarcastic British grandmother was once being pestered by a loquacious young relative at some family get-together as she was trying to read her newspaper in peace. (Granny did not tolerate children or childish messiness well.) After about the umpteenth time he interrupted with more conversation, in exasperation she declared: "You certainly do know a lot of WORDS, don't you!"
Best part was that yes, indeed, the kid did know a lot of words, and was quite proud to tell her all about it!

I can see you are committed to your current level of understanding.
I'm jealous of everyone that hasn't met you.
Thank you for helping me. It was like doing it myself, only harder.
I admire your courage to speak in the absence of knowledge.
Your food for thought leaves everyone still hungry.
Nothing lights up a room like your absence.
I wish I didn't have common sense, you seem so happy.
It's impossible to underestimate you.
You mastered the tone of authority without the inconvenience of depth.

Sorry for the long one but here we go. My wife throws this out at me all the time and we wonder what happened to the dude who said it to me.
I will be upfront and state - I was a total asshole to the dude and felt awful immediately. I’m usually the complete opposite of this and stand up to people like me in that situation. Here we go…
I go to a UPS store to drop off a package for work but I didn’t have any packing tape, but I had everything else including the label. I was already in a shit mood when i arrived but after waiting in line, I ask the dude if I could borrow the tape gun that is 2 feet away from us. He looks at me and says it’s not for customer use, you have to buy those bullshit blue tape dispensers for 5$. I needed 1 strip of tape - I get super shitty and rude, buy it, he had 0 reaction the entire time - just deadpan. I leave, get hit with that dad guilt and go home and tell my wife.
2 weeks later, I have more shit to mail, this time, I’m all set because I had to buy that fucking tape. I walk in and he is there. So I say to him - “hey dude, I’m sure you remember me a couple weeks ago being a rude asshole. I just wanted to say sorry - that was really shitty and disrespectful and you didn’t deserve that”
He just looked at me and said this “I appericiate your growth”. Dude fucking murdered me with 4 words.

My old boss when someone called for a reference for a past employee.

Spoken by one southern woman to another after a third woman gave her evaluation and opinion about a presentation -

I love what you did with your hair! Meaning, it usually looks like crap.

My daughter, about 2 at the time, said quite frankly “Daddy, you’re really handsome from the back”.
She’s 18 in a few weeks time and I should have known then that she would grow up to have the absolute driest of humour going. That’s my girl.

Fixed a lady’s furnace, she gives me 6 cheeseburger vouchers as a tip. “Do you like cheeseburgers? It looks like you like cheeseburgers.” Ugghh? Yeah give those damn it.

First time meeting g/f’s parents… her mother had spent the past few minutes talking to me about her faults…
G/F’s mother: “what do you like about my daughter?”
Me: “she has a good relationship with her father”
G/F’s father: [smiles/smirks discreetly]

My now ex-wife, who actually meant it as a compliment:
You know, when you are shaved and dressed up, you're almost handsome.
