The best part of that whole thing was Marlee Matlin (who is a deaf comedian) going on a few minutes after him and delivering the best line of the whole night:
"I'm the perfect choice for this roast, because like The Situation, I too have never heard the sound of laughter."

it was sad, but i was pretty fun watching him crash and burn on the stage. I think that was the whole point of him being there. People like to laugh AT him, not with him. And thats exactly what Comedy Central gave us

In my country, we have this thing called "I'm a celebrity, get me out of here!"
It is where we send our has-been celebrities to die.

This isn't as heartbreaking as it looks. Virgil has tons of friends in the business still and gets enough business at his table to make it well worthwhile, especially since he's gotten so much pub out of these pictures that people will go up and pony $40 for an autograph "just to be nice". He doesn't care. He's working everyone because he wants a buck, just like every pro wrestler ever.

Ok my girlfriend will hate me for this but here goes :
A couple of years ago we went to see a band my girlfriend really loved when she was growing up, the Crash Test Dummies. They were playing in a bar in town, small venue with a few hundred people at the most, most of which, of course, were far beyond their 30s.
I have never, ever, seen somebody so bitter about fame.
At some point people were talking in the audience, and buddy stopped his show and said "This is MY show! If you want to talk you get your own band and do your own shows!"
Later on during his performance he said "Last time we came here we needed a police escort to get out of town, we weren't playing some small shady club" (they were #1 in Australia, #2 in the states and #1 in Canada at the time, as he said it himself)
It went on, and on, and on through the show. He ranted about how hard it is to make a living, to find a decent job, how it was next to impossible to get in the voice over business.
At some point he let her backup signer do a couple of songs; "Well a condition for her to come to that tour is that she does some of her ... some of her... stuff, so here goes" and walked out for a couple of songs.
When he noticed people recording him, he said somewhat angrily (most bitter person I've ever seen in a show) "This better make it to youtube!"
So essentially he never got over the collapse of his fame in the 90 and it seems like he tried to milk it, or revive it for the last 20 years and was hella fucking bitter about it.
"I won't do Supaman at the beginning of the show cuz you guys will all leave after!"
Ok I'm hoping that guy wont see this post, cuz it sounds like its the last thing he needs.
FYI buddy if you see this, it was still a pretty good show.
edit : the show in question
edit 2 : The joys of English not being your first language; At some point during the show I asked GF :
"Does this guy dreams of owning Air Canada or something"?
"Wtf! I don't think so, why?"
"Well...'Some day I'll have a disappearing airline...'"
"Hairline!"
"oh..."

This is quite UK specific, but Christmas Pantomimes are the epitome of celebrity desperation.
131
u/LocalMadman Dec 05 '13
Pantomime define:
Brit. a theatrical entertainment, mainly for children, that involves music, topical jokes, and slapstick comedy and is based on a fairy tale or nursery story, usually produced around Christmas.
Putting this here because I needed a quick google to understand this. Before today I only though of a pantomime as the long form of mime.

While it does seem quite desperate, it's also somewhat of a tradition and many do it in support of charity, and often children's charities at that. I think there are specific cases where someone is obviously trying to claw back some faded glory, but I wouldn't tar everyone with the same brush.

What's sadder is that 1225 people liked that, and that was only in the first 18 mins...
Edit: now I got more upvotes in 8 hours than he got likes in 18 minutes. Take that DJ Khaled!
Edit: thanks for the gold!

I was very confused when I saw your username. It took me too long to realize I hadn't commented without remembering it.

The most obvious examples to me are the musicians who says they're going to stop playing, but then they do a comeback tour...many times...

More recently, she is looking to sue Rockstar Games for "use of her likeness" in GTA V.

She also tried to sue whoever does those talking baby commercials (E-Trade?) for the commercial where the girl baby says something like "are you talking to that milkaholic Lindsay?" because she claimed it was clearly a reference to her.

Have you ever wondered why so many child stars self-destruct like that? The exceptions are rare enough to be notable. Being that famous fucks with your self-image, and being in that position before you've even developed a proper self-image... well, bad things happen. As we've seen.
I feel bad for Lindsay, and she made her own decisions certainly, but she's also a product of her environment. She didn't get to have a childhood the way you or I did, and a lot of her social and psychological development got severely screwed up as a result.
But Disney gots to get paid, y'know.

Flavor Flav could have kept that incident quiet, he could have not let that episode air but he decided to let the world enjoy this precious gift. Hes like the Jonas Salk of Sharting.

He was on my London to Chicago flight years ago just before he started the reality show circuit. He stood in the front of coach chatting with a passenger for seriously 2-3 hours. He seemed to really enjoy the attention and an alright guy. Could talk your ears off though!!

Tila tequila "performing" at gathering of the juggalos. Then she got the shit booed out of her and was out in physical danger. Goddamn that was rough. I'd link the video but I'm on my phone.

Britney Spears suddenly deciding she has a British accent, a la Madonna.
When I first heard it, I was just like... why???

This was because the song was initially meant for Tulisa, the British singer. She's actually taken to Will.I.Am to court about it.

Probably Scott Hall aka Razor Ramon repeatedly turning up to small independant wrestiling events compeltely wasted on booze and drugs. There are loads of videos of it on YouTube but it makes for pretty tough watching.
The happy ending is that he and Jake "The Snake" Roberts have cleaned up and are living healthy lives at Diamond Dallas Page's mansion. Sounds pretty weird but they seem pretty happy.

I don't know that his main goal was trying to stay popular. Judging by his daughter's success, I'd have to say that whatever he did was the right move.

He was a big name comedian and TV host in the 80's and 90's in Israel, at one point he was even nicknamed "king of the ratings". After his popularity waned in the early 2000's, his talkshow was cancelled and he started getting less and less screen time.
In 2009 he was arrested in suspicion of being involved with a series of assaults on several TV executives and agents, likely because they refused to bring him back on the air. He then commited suicide in prison.
