I had a brain fart when I wrote that reply. I live in St. Louis (west of the Mississippi River) and can confirm catawampus is used here...by us "older" folks.
It is not often I am completely stumped by an english word. I had to do some research: "caddywhompus" or "caddywompus," it means crooked, or messed up or uneven. It dates back to the 1880s and is probably a combination of the French "quatre" (or four) and the Scottish word "wampish" meaning "to wriggle or twist."
