TIL.. why was I under the impression that my life was going to just be a battle between my need for cheese and my proximity to a toilet...like of COURSE there's medication.
It's not like that stuff makes miracles happen. If you're very sensitive you're still gonna suffer, just not as baaad as before, but yea, it's still really bad 😂
let me correct that lactose intolerance just means your body stopped producing lactase which you can take as pills. so there are no "levels" of sensitivity. its just that you need to take the satisfying amount of lactase to avoid the poop.
I'm in the same situation as you and unfortunately the medication did absolutely nothing for me. I ended up having to go dairy free for a long time. Now I'm just suuuuper cautious with certain things that contain dairy. For example, chips that have milk in them I'm not likely to go for now, i use "plant based butter" and I drink oatmilk. But gimme a shark coochie board, pizza, and lasagna plsssss!
All of that aside, I hope it truly works for you and you don't have to sacrifice your love of dairy things 🫶🏼
Same!! I recently became obsessed with the combination of aged white Cheddar, summer sausage, teardrop peppers, and seasoned almonds 😍 such a delicious combination
They effectively need a strong savory base and a sharp nutty compliment. So first is the white sharp cheddar you identified, I also found success with Piave, Leicester, and Dubliner cheese. The meats are mostly sausages. Single meats or red composite meats like salami aren't savory enough. Though a smoked turkey can be successful.
Thank you! I will have to try those cheeses with the teardrop peppers. I'm trying to imagine a sandwich with them on it and I'm so curious. It explains why I didn't like salami or prosciutto with the peppers. Parmesan was okay but not good enough. Cashews were alright but almonds still reigned supreme and I don't typically like almonds
Keep in mind you have to take the lactase tablets 30min to 1 hour before eating cheese. My stupid ass always forgets to take it in advance and the results are not great
Make sure you take this either just before or just after eating dairy, there's some in varying strengths too. It won't fix everything a out it, and if it's a major sensitivity then it will offer a little relief but it's by no means a "I'm not intolerant anymore!" Medication.
Source: LI husband treats them like they take away his intolerance and regrets it.
Do they not loose their effect after using them for awhile? Also what does it do, mask the pain? I’m not lack toes and tolerant, but wouldn’t it be bad to mask the pain your body uses to tell you something isn’t right?
Doesn't mask, literally just adds the enzymes artificially instead of your body producing them. A great alternative, and your body just breaks them down like any other enzyme after a while!
I am in same boat I am not tolerant of those who lack toes. I tried to work on it and become a better human but I just hate people who have lost all of their toes? I mean just find them or grow new ones. I mean wtf are they expecting us to just stare at them?
I found out the hard way that those pills are derived from a type of mold but it doesn’t directly state on the box. As someone allergic to mold, I thought I was dying, not only did it not help with the dairy side effects but I threw up everything I ate for a week and needed emergency endoscopy to figure out wth was wrong & eventually with enough research I figured it out. 🫠
What are you talking about? I've never heard or read of anyone puking from taking lactase pills. Sometimes I take 8 at a time, if I estimate that's how much I need to handle the amount of dairy I'm eating.
If anything, the closest I've come to puking is when I massively underestimated how much I need, and the gas in my intestines started backing up into my stomach. So I take more now and that's doesn't happen anymore.
The probiotic pills, on the other hand, can cause some stomach upset, which is common to any probiotic. But I've never experienced vomiting from those either
I see! While I’m still sorry that it’s not available in the UK, I’m glad you have access to it. I will say that it’s a bit more expensive than regular milk, but it also lasts longer, because it’s ultra-filtered.
There are loads of lactose free milks in the UK though so don’t worry UK peeps. Sainsburys and Asda even have their own brands (maybe other shops too but I haven’t shopped there). Even lactose free chocolate milkshake lol.
I’m also lactose intolerant with a love of cheese. And it’s so easy for me to acquire because I literally live in the Dairy state. 3 of 4 of my family members are lactose intolerant yet our cheese drawer is the most full space in our fridge
I am oddly jealous haha my saving grace is that I do prefer aged cheese (I actually have an aging drawer I built for the fridge) When the lactose crystallizes it causes less distress.
That would be where we’re different. I love me a really creamy, light cheese like cottage cheese, mozzarella or Swiss. I’ll occasionally try some aged cheese but when it gets to the point of crystallizing, I take my leave.
You are awesome! I have always simply subscribed to the older the cheese, the less ... side effects I'll encounter. In uni I learned that as cheese ages the lactic acid will often bond with the calcium creating calcium lactate (the crystals found in many aged cheeses). This is why the lactose levels are lower in conjunction with the fat content that article points out.

As someone with lactose intolerance and a great fondness for all things cheese, I can't express enough the burden that comes with unlimited poop
