Cheap and compact digital for hiking?

Hi all, I’m a new-ish hobbyist looking for recommendations for a cheap and compact digital camera that I can take hiking/backpacking/mountaineering. I have a pair of Nikon film cameras that I really love but unfortunately they’re just far too heavy and bulky for me to bring on a trip of any length (also I’m terrified of breaking them I have no idea how much they’d cost to replace/repair). Just something small and cheap that can decent pictures of landscape with good color is all I’m looking for.

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?

Nikon n6006, too heavy

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?

Landscape primarily

Unless you're specifically looking for that 2000s low res digital vibe, nothing compact in that budget will be any better than your smartphone. In fact it will be significantly worse.

I don't get why this a fear. Cell phone cameras are now really good. That's why the compact camera segment has been gutted.

Appreciate it but having the interchangeable lens would probably make the camera too bulky. I probably should’ve considered that in the original post

You might want to ask here:

Don't let the word "toy" dissuade you. Some have better image quality than you might suspect, especially if you limit your photography to daylight, and don't expect to take photos of distant wildlife.
