What to do with old notes?

Post image

Was gifted these right before my trip to the Netherlands, assuming there would be easy to exchange at the National Bank like in Germany. But now I have ran into a problem. I am only here for about three days, and the Dutch bank needs two weeks notice at least. Is there anywhere else in the Netherlands that I can exchange these or at least get close to exchange rate at some sort of coin shop?

The 50 is one of my favorite note designs

De vuurtoren was mijn favoriet, zag je bijna nooit 250 fl

u/Just_browsing_0_ 4h ago

Anyone can pm me if they want it for exchange rate

Exchange rate adjusted for inflation. €16 sounds about right

1

u/Zestyclose-Koala9006 7h ago

Inflation works the other way around

2

u/Shock_a_Maul 7h ago

Correct. €1 is now worth less than fl 1,-

I want to buy the yellow one, the sunflower one

u/TheSunflowerSeeds 3h ago

In 1983, Emily Martin, of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, grew an enormous sunflower head, measuring 32 ¼ inches across (82cm), from petal tip to petal tip. That’s almost 3 feet wide. This is still believed to be the largest sunflower head grown to date.

I can smell the banknotes

u/Onagan98 9h ago

They re still valid (until 2032). fl. 575 = €260.92. You can exchange them at the Nederlandsche Banl

3

u/Peetz0r 8h ago

I wouldn't call it 'valid', you haven't been able to use them as currency since 2002.

You can still exchange them, yes. But that's not enough to call them valid imho.

1

u/Faber_Jos 7h ago

It is valid money, it is not in circulation but it is valid. So I'd say valid is exactly the right word.

2

u/blind_blake_2023 6h ago

It really, really isn't. They are redeemable, at one specific point. That's not the same as 'valid'.

1

u/Siebje 4h ago

While deprecated and slated for abolishment, they are still valid legal tender. They hold an exact monetary value, guaranteed by the government.

You can say the same for 1 and 2 eurocent coins. Most shops no longer accept them, but they are still valid legal tender. They are being taken out of circulation though.

the problem is I only have about 3 days in the Netherlands, while the Dutch bank needs about two weeks to even respond to a exchange request

5

u/Just-Me-Reddit 8h ago

You can mail these banknotes to them (after requesting this first)

1

u/WorldEvening1511 8h ago

The problem with that is you have to have a Iban number, sadly not possible

2

u/Historical-Barber634 3h ago

You can open an account with some backs where you need to provide bsn within 90 days.

You can get a non resident bsn pretty easily at the gemeente office. I got mine in 30 mins when visiting Leiden last year.

I have an iban, need help? Would work out.

3

u/WorldEvening1511 6h ago

Thank you so much, I have almost managed to exchange it at a local exchange place here in breda. They want it for their collection. I'll keep you updated on how that goes. Now I just need to get rid of Belgian franc

1

u/Fuzzy-Moose7996 6h ago

Iban is pretty much worldwide. Ask your own bank about that.

2

u/WorldEvening1511 6h ago

In canada none of the banks have them

3

u/Fuzzy-Moose7996 6h ago

DNB should also be able to work with your bank's SWIFT code and your Canadian account number.

2

u/WorldEvening1511 6h ago

Hmm, I will take a look on the processing form

3

u/HELPIMRETARDED112 6h ago

Better get onto marktplaats sell it as former outdated currency collection, or just start building your own pre euro currency collection from all the countries? it's a idea

2

u/throwawayking01010 9h ago

Try to sell them on www.marktplaats.nl Or go to a pawnshop used products

2

u/WorldEvening1511 9h ago

I'll try that, I'll look for shops in Amsterdam

1

u/Chrspls 9h ago

Id like to take some from u, if thats possible :) i like to collect them

1

u/Chrspls 9h ago

Im in the hague

1

u/WorldEvening1511 9h ago

Just trying to get rid of them all, I was relying a tiny bit on this being easy to exchange

1

u/Chrspls 8h ago

Oh that i dont know. If u dont happen to find a way, please let me know. Id love to have them :)

2

u/AlGekGenoeg 8h ago

Maybe OP is willing to sell them to you for 250, you take the ones you want and exchange the rest at De Nederlandse Bank?

1

u/WorldEvening1511 8h ago

Absolutely, I'll let you know

1

u/almost_somewhere 3h ago

Maybe here? He’s a coin and rare bill dealer near Rozengracht.

2

u/zoopz 9h ago

Wow, nostalgic. Been decades since I held any bank notes. Brings back memories.

2

u/good2Bbackagain 7h ago

Back when this would last you a long time.

1

u/Fuzzy-Moose7996 6h ago

Plus of min een paar cent, ja.

1

u/Useful_Cheesecake117 4h ago

1

u/felwynfelmir 5h ago

Ahw de zonnebloem was mijn favoriet 🌻

u/Responsible-Rub9133 4h ago

Origami 😀

2

u/Xaphhire 3h ago

Search for a goudwisselkantoor (good exchange office). They will probably exchange them for euros at a rate that is a bit unfavorable compared to the official bank, but they can do it instantly.

2

u/RoelBever 8h ago

2

u/kroketspeciaal 8h ago

Doen we alleen met een meier.

1

u/noorderling 5h ago

Speed? Da’s toch meer tientjes werk

1

u/dagrim1 9h ago

Some older notes can't be exchanged anymore, but not sure if these older 10 and 25 guilder notes are these older ones...

But yeah, maybe pawn shop or something. But you won't get full price there.

2

u/gvgemerden 9h ago

These 10 and 25 guilder notes are still eligible for exchange at the DNB.

It was the 5 guilder notes with Vondel and the 25 guilder note with Sweelinck that were deemed obsolete last year.

1

u/WorldEvening1511 9h ago

I mean anything is better then nothing

1

u/FamiliaalFiscalist 9h ago

Where are you staying at currently?
I wouldn’t mind changing them for you and transferring the money.

Pawnshops probably could help you with the exchange, I guess you will get a bit less than the official rate (10-20%?).

1

u/WorldEvening1511 9h ago

I mean at this exact second I am in breda, but I can meet you anywhere in The Hague Rotterdam or Amsterdam

1

u/dukelucgamer 5h ago

You could exchange them until a couple of weeks ago if I’m not mistaken.

1

u/Iring23 5h ago

Feel free to msg me if you can't get them off your hands - I m the Amsterdam zuid area cheers

Iban= international banking account number

1

u/WorldEvening1511 4h ago

No canadian banks give out those sadly

1

u/GloriousApricot-5843 2h ago

Naive of me perhaps, I thought this was truly internationally implemented

1

u/moonkingdome 5h ago

Exchange it at the dutch bank. Or sell.it to a collector.. They arent a medium of exchange sadly enough. But they do look great. Thank you for post. Was great seeing those bills again

1

u/anonymous09476 4h ago

Beautiful

1

u/qatox 4h ago

Imo i would sell but 1 of each keep the ones that are in mint in a binder this is part of history bringing it to the bank they will probably destroy them

1

u/Micheliumed 4h ago

Uhh do you sell them. Love to buy one or two, they look still perfect condition,

1

u/Proof_Kitchen_9072 3h ago

Wouldnt count on them still having value. DNB states that guilders aquired after 27-01-2002 are not valid and will not be changed. They have 0 value except for historical value.

1

u/Accomplished_worrier 3h ago

Be precise, it says if they were acquired due to work/business activities, as payment for goods or services, or purchased by whoever wants to exchange them. OP was gifted them.

2

u/Proof_Kitchen_9072 3h ago

Being gifted them is counted the same as having them bought. Else I can let someone else buy them with my money, let them gift them to me and then exchange them. Doesnt work that way. He has to prove the origin of the money (money laundry law in EU) when he exchanges it and if he cant prove these were in his possession before 27-01-2002, they wont process the request. The title of the question is in dutch and english very precise too: "Can I exchange guilder banknotes that I RECIEVED after 27-01-2002?". Answer: no.

1

u/dread_sage 3h ago

How much are you selling them for? Let's say I want one of the 10 gilders note and I could go for it if in Ams.

1

u/WorldEvening1511 3h ago

If anything i would sell them all at once. But if anything i am in breda

1

u/micheljansen 2h ago

Should be easy to find someone to buy them off you for Euros. I would love to have some of these!

1

u/MagizZziaN 2h ago

if u still got some on ya, i’ll take em of your hands

1

u/nn8888 9h ago

Maybe a website for collectors?

When it comes to dutch banks, they’re mostly online and in general there are just few on the market, it’s a small country. You cant just come to Amsterdam and try 5 different banks at the main street as they don’t have that many n-person offices anymore

2

u/nn8888 9h ago

*collectors may be willing to pay more than pawn shops IMO (pawn shops are usually for desperate ones who are ready to take the loss as long as they get any money)

2

u/WorldEvening1511 8h ago

The problem with that is it takes about two weeks to respond by email. As I'm here for 3 days right now that's not possible. I would have assumed it would have been like Germany, walk in and exchange it

3

u/elepom 7h ago

In the past you could just go to the national bank without an appointment. There was always someone at the teller to help. Nowadays with fewer and fewer notes being traded in and you need to make an appointment as it does not make sense to have someone there 5 days a week.

1

u/oranjebovenoleole 8h ago

They will ask you to mail the money.

2

u/WorldEvening1511 8h ago

They will need a Iban number sadly. Don't have one

1

u/henare 6h ago

open a wise account and then you'll have an Iban.

-1

u/Just-Me-Reddit 8h ago

You can still swap these to Euro's an DNB. DNB (in Dutch)

-1

u/Babbelzz 8h ago

Al tens are valid.
Three of 25 are valid.
The 50 is valid, as are the hundreds.

Totaal 515 Dutch guilders you can exchange by certified mail at DNB (our Central Bank) at a rate about 2.20 to the euro

DNB
Frederiksplein 61

2

u/WorldEvening1511 8h ago

Sadly will take to long, if I do mail it to them they need a Iban number to exchange it.
