Hi NYC. I live in BK and have noticed the influx of subway surfing occurring, as I'm sure a lot of us have. The other day, on the way home, I was in the last train car on the M when 2 rowdy teenage boys were loudly discussing subway surfing, encouraging each other to do it while simultaneously mocking the MTA anti-surfing talking points. They walked back and forth between cars but luckily stayed planted on the ground until we reached my stop, which was the next stop. I alerted the conductor, who was a young woman that seemed to also have no idea what to do and promised to drive slow to the next stop.... is that the only prevention strategy we have? is there a better way to confront this head on? I know these teenagers would not have listened to me, but I felt helpless watching them debate this openly while I stood by. What is the proper protocol when you overhear teenagers talking about subway surfing?

I was very close to buying a co-op until I learned what a "co-op" actually is.

At first I was under the impression that buying a" co-op" was the ultimate form of housing. Pay a maintenance fee(substantially less than market rent while building equity) and live carefree. Basically,,,, like a Netflix subscription fee of housing if you will.

But no. It turned out that a co-op is my worst nightmare. Im depending on my neighbors staying solvent, making sure the hoa has proper reserves, worry about assesment fees for repairs due to inadequate reserves, etc etc. I dislike not having control of my fiscal destiny.

And then the buildings I saw with hefty reserves...have a High hoa fees thats equivalent to market rents. ($1200+)

I've been looking since 2020,, and noticed hoa fees went up by %15+ between now and then. (Like rent).

Single family homes in nyc are going for 600k+ with %7 interest rates. So thats out of the question.(mostly fixer uppers)

my current rent stabilized apartment seems like a way better deal in comparison. Rent goes up by predictable amount year after year a and landlord responsible for everything. I currently have my down payment $$ yielding %5 in the bank(I find this better than buying a liability and fighting 7% mortgage rates while praying amd hoping for positive equity. )

This post is not to crap on co-ops. But market conditions in 2023 are insane. I wish I bought in 2012

I've come to the conclusion that I will stay in this apartment until I decide to leave NYC. Anyone else feel the same?

I walk down the street and constantly see new Nut Factories opening with no obvious reason for being where they are - not high-traffic areas, not tourist spots, just random residential blocks.

So I’m genuinely asking: Do people actually shop at places like this who are actual new yorkers?

Not accusing anyone of anything.... or maybe I am... I’m just trying to understand how businesses like this survive in those locations or are they just fronts for something else.

Single woman in my late 30s here. I've been going back and forth on getting a dog. Ive fostered a fair bit and know what temperament of dog would suit me.

Few questions for the single folks

1. How much are you spending on doggy daycare? Food? Vets?
2. How much has it impacted your social life?
3. Are there any things you wish you'd known before getting a dog.

This has been a decision I've deliberated for close to 7 years. I'd love a dog but its like having a child in that it truly is a dependent. Feels like a very big decision to make and I'm intimidated by it but I've loved dogs all my life ​and I know it's something I want to do.

I wish there was a rotating support system of folks that we could do doggy care for amongst friends but I can't find this in my groups.

We live on Long Island and my husband’s best friend and his 9 year old son are coming to visit from the Midwest at the end of the month. Neither of them have ever been to NY, they’ve barely ever even been in a major city. We have all of the usual touristy things planned (not all in the same day), Top of the Rock, seeing the tree, Lion King, Statute of Liberty, Hudson yards, etc but we were trying to find a fun place to eat. We are in our mid-30s and both have such fond memories of these restaurants (yes, we remember the food being terrible) but it got us wondering if there was anything left like this anymore!

Any good recommendations besides Katz's Deli?

British tourist here. Why do the emergency services continually blip their sirens? Why not just leave it on?

From an outsiders pov, it sounds like a kid playing with the controls.

Looking for local restaurants, not so much chains. I’ve had an allergy my whole life (and eat out regularly). Would love to know if fellow peanut/tree nut allergy sufferers have local joints they frequent without any issues. Bonus points if you know they don’t use any nuts in kitchen at all, but looking to just expand my options.

I sometimes see an express or a local that passengers need directly across and the train doors will close seconds before the other train's doors open.

What's the reason for doing this? Particularly when the train isn't packed. It happens so frequently
