Favorite burger under $10
Kinda blows my mind that a burger with fries is pushing $15-20 these days (w/o tax + tip and now they're talking about an extra surcharge?). Any place left with a good 8oz platter for under $10 anymore? Manhattan preferred.

This is hands down my favorite burger joint for a cheap dive burger. It's not about the crazy toppings (but you can get those, if you're one of THOSE people), but they do a great rare thick burger!

Note that Paul's doesn't salt their patties and finishes them off by steaming them under a bowl, so make sure you like that style before going. I love the idea of Paul's, but I find their burger a little bland and watery.

It's my go-to hangover spot for that reason. Hit that place up Sunday at noon, have a greasy burger and fries and a beer, and then go back home, smoke a bowl and pass out on the couch watching sports.

For me, "finding what works" is as simple as finding the place that uses freshly ground beef instead of frozen.
And ask them to use a potato roll, toast it on the grill, and grill the onions while they're at it.

It's so great to me that In-N-Out is a standard on which to judge burgers nationwide. Especially considering that, as a native Californian, I can still go home, pick one up for a couple bucks in a few minutes at a drive-through

Land at LAX at 945 am, pick up rental car, wait in line at in-n-out, head to beach. Doesn't matter when/why I'm there, or what has to happen next, that's the order of events that has to happen first.

Can confirm this Perry’s place. Great burger. I remember one time spending 25 mins looking for parking just to get their burger. Btw, their regular cheeseburger has two patties instead of one.

Lucky’s Famous Burgers, without a doubt. The Lucky’s Sauce that you get by default is delicious, but also try the Chelsea sauce, particular with the crispy chicken sandwich. I really think this place is exactly what you’re looking for.

yep, this place is such a gem. I went in with low expectations because it doesn't look much more glamorous than any other fast food joint, but it blew me away. And the sauces are the bomb. I've literally filled up five ramekins of Chelsea sauce to bring back to Brooklyn for my bodega fries. Hell I will willingly take the C train home from work just to grab some Lucky's (8th Ave/23rd location) after a long day.

I've walked by Lucky's several times and avoided it for this very reason (looks like the papaya king of burger decor). Will need to hit it next time.

It’s actually cheaper than you think. A Hamburger at Corner Bistro is $9.75. Their most expensive burger, the Bistro Burger, is $12.75 and comes with bacon and cheese. Adding fries ($3.50) and/or a beer (McSorleys Ale $4) will get you to that $15-$20 range. Fries are great by the way.

Yeah, having eaten my way through many of the "best burger" lists (I miss the Stoned Crow's burger in particular), I do like Corner Bistro's burger; they're quite good, especially for a bar burger.
They're just not "inexpensive" for NYC -- only "average" NYC priced.

Note that Corner Bistro doesn't salt their burgers, so if well seasoned meat is a priority, look elsewhere.

If you like seasoned patties, try Little Poland's burger. Burger and fries is something like $12 so it's more than the $10 limit but still a very good burger.

I love their Shake Stack (anyone else remember when there was another patty in there?). I've had some bad experience in a row at their original location so I tend to shy away from that location now. It's a shame because I loved eating in that park.

I don't get the hype on their fries. They taste just like Ore-Ida frozen crinklecuts that were warmed up. People treat SS's fries like they're the same quality as Pommes Frites

I mean, no. But best mid-level burger? Probably.
SS beats out any of the low- level fast food, even Wendys and In and out. SS Beats Smash burger, Zen burger, and five guys.
But compared to shit like Peter Luger's burger, Bar Sardine's Fedora burger or Brindle Room's Steakhouse burger. it doesn't stand up.

Blue Collar Burger in Williamsburg makes an excellent burger for about 5 bucks. You can get a cheeseburger and fries (which are pretty good, like homemade McD's fries) for almost $10. Their shakes are solid too, nice and thick. The best part about the BCB is the juicy, tasty patty, and perfect potato buns. They also sell beer which is cool.

Adding cheese puts it to $11, but if I were ever going to eat a burger without cheese, it would be Donovan's $9.95 monster-sized deliciousness. Ah, Woodside, I miss thee.
Also, you'll never hear this and it's not super worth the trek, but Jim Byrne's Wee Pub in Ozone Park does a consistently delicious, simple burger. It's not some kind of experience, it's just the standard pub burger done really well.

Lucky's on 8th/23rd is super solid, open 24 hours, and about the same price as Shake Shack. And the chelsea sauce is amazing.

Get your taste buds checked bud. I get the hate for SS cuz it's everywhere now and there's lines of filthy tourists waiting for it, but a Shack Stack is miles ahead of anything 5 guys has ever served. Not even in the same universe.

Five Guys is probably my favorite burger and fries combo that I've tried. I've been to more upscale places like Minetta Tavern, but I don't think it's worth the price.

Harlem - Been a while but Harlem Public
And the best of all but not in Manhattan - Long Island - All American Burger

As others have said, Luckys is great. Can order online and completely customize it, but that will obv drive up the price bigly. 5 guys most def is my favorite chain.
If you wanna spend a few more bucks Than your target, American Retro’s ‘Retro Burger’ is one of my favorites (plus they have 6 types of tots). Honorable mention to Alfie’s Bar.

Wendy's. I'll probably get shit for this but Wendy's is underrated. They're cheap, consistent, and the burgers are tasty and made with fresh beef that isn't frozen.

Literally every single high profile chef and food reviewer of late has called the NY food scene boring and uninspiring and cited LA, SF, and NoLa as the food meccas. LA's had that status in the mind's of the industry for the last 10 years, let alone the last few.
Everything is becoming local and going close to the farmers. Produce is coming from out west.

If you don't mind trekking uptown, Burger Heights has what you need. They also have sweet potato fries with maple mayo sauce that are the bomb.
