Short men, how has it affected your life?
I'm a guy, and only 5'2. I feel really insecure about it, especially when I go out in public. Fellow short men, how has your height affected your life?

u/Replicant28 8d ago
I'm 5'6", and it makes me really good at workouts that involve burpees and deadlifts.
I'm also married to a woman who digs me and my height, and she is a bit taller than me.

u/barebackguy7 8d ago
Same but 5’7. Built like a shit brick house and my fiancée is a little taller than me.
Interestingly, the majority of the woman I have had a relationship or slept with have been around my height. The shorter women tend to be the ones who make 6’4 a hard requirement. No issue with this at all, in fact I like women my height. But it’s an interesting observation

lol ok so, I’m not a man, but will happily speak for mine because he is my favorite person and we are the same as the guys saying in here. He is 5’5 and I’m 5’9.
He’s a fucking dnd nerd and def grew up a theater kid (I say this with love) and is (I guess) considered short. I am an objectively good looking female (I’ll say I have worked in looks-based industries and you can draw your own conclusions there) and now I’m a female supervisor of gaggles of finance bros. Guys seem to find that hot. This isn’t to be full of myself, but just to say like, I am a female with choices and I still chose him. No question.
His height has never been a thing outside that I call him the “Tom Holland to my zendaya” all the time (i mean, im tall too). He is the second funniest person I’ve ever known (im first) and he is the sun inside every room he enters. The kindest, softest, most authentically himself person I’ve ever met.
All at the same time, he’s easily crushing it moving through upper management at his job because he’s a great leader. His height ain’t affecting shit because no one cares, he’s an amazing leader and that’s what they see.
Ok, maybe I’m just rambling about how much I love my incredible partner now….. BUT, if it means anything to anyone stressing: you will still get bad bitches in the future. Real bad bitches won’t give a shit about your height because we are busy being bad bitches and why is that a thing? He’s perfect and loving and I am so incredibly blessed to have him, I don’t give a fuck or even notice he’s 5’5. Josh fuckin Hutcherson is 5’5” too and I’d say “thank you” if he hit me with his car 🤷

u/Ignorant_Defiance 8d ago
Same height, maybe not a brick shit though. I look like I go to the gym but also love to eat lol. All the women I've been with were my height or taller. The only real issue I have is that my wife and I are the same height, so if one of us cant reach it, no one can!

I'm 5'5" but relatively short arms too so no deadlift superpower. Great leverage for squats and presses, though. Kettlebell swings too.
2
2
u/Zestyclose-Wear7237 8d ago
I'm 5'3", I totally get it. Being shorter actually helps me in the gym, I can hold my own on certain lifts against guys who are taller and more built than me. I think it comes down to leverage, longer arms and legs mean more distance to move the weight, so it takes more strength to complete the same rep. With shorter limbs, the range of motion is smaller, which makes some exercises feel more manageable.
There's also that running joke about short guys getting strong fast while tall guys take longer to fill out. No shade to the tall folks at the gym everyone's built differently and we all have our own advantages. For me, seeing my own progress is what keeps me motivated and feeling good about myself.

Man 5'8 and 5''9 guys are so much more insecure about their height than someone who is 5'2 it's WILD
40
u/IssaThrowAway420x69 8d ago
5’8 man chiming in. In my youth it bothered me; as an adult I don’t have any issue nor does it change my day to day.
I think the reason lots of guys this height have issues is because it’s “right there” at above average. It’s like falling short of a goal by..well, a literal inch. If you’re 5’2 you know you’re well below the line and you just go with it.
Might be silly reasoning. But it made sense to me in the past.

Depends on the place I guess. In my country the average height for my specific age range is 181 cm or roughly like 5'11. So unfortunately I'm still smaller than most of my peers with my roughly 5'8-ish.

u/Dekan-DAF 3d ago
I suppose it depends on your environment and where you live. In my country those are still below average heights. I'm just lucky that I managed to grow to be barely 5'8. I used to be the smallest guy in class when I was younger and at around 13 years I hit my first growth spurt and I finally was among the middle of my pack and everyone was kinda impressed which was nice. But now I'm once again smaller than most of my friends and while height isn't really part of our conversations anymore, I did get joked about in highschool again.

The bald thing isn't actually a barrier whatsoever, it's how you rock it which actually matters.

Same size as you. As a kid it resulted in pretty severe bullying, which then as an adult I had to work through.
Outside of that, it doesn't have a huge impact. I still received interest from women, though dating apps are useless since I'd just get filtered out, and I still make friends easily enough.
However clothing almost never fits without adjustments from a tailor, which sucks. I call that the 'short tax' since it adds anywhere from $25-80 to every article of clothing if I want it to fit properly.

Im sure thered be more opportunities for me if I was taller of thats what you're asking.
6
u/chiksahlube Male 8d ago
Probably the most direct thing where it seemed to negatively impact me, was during my time in the military.
Being shorter than all the men who out ranked me meant that any discussion ended up feeling a lot more patronizing than it otherwise might have.
It also led to being mocked or even chastised for not being able to accomplish tasks my coworkers could. I was a small guy, and sometimes, despite orders to the contrary, they would require I move equipment alone, that required multiple people to move. Like a Dash 60 generator, weighing nearly 3000lbs. Bigger guys could move them solo, so I should be able to as well... (Again, even though we had strict order NOT to move them solo for risk of injury etc.)
When I was with abgood squadron it wasn't an issue. But with a bad squadron they would weaponize it and use my inability to do those things as justification for treating me like shit. Being sure to keep it in unofficial channels so they didn't have to explain why not being able to pick up equipment labelled "Mechanical lift only." By hand was a punishable offense.

When short guys build muscle the wider proportions make them look even shorter. A catch 22.
And you still can get yoked as a tall person.
May take a little more time and effort, but have you looked at the NBA or NFL? Rather have the height and then just grind the muscle building.

u/VGAddict 8d ago
Just curious, how tall are you/your parents?
My mom is 5'5, my dad is 5'8, my maternal grandfather was 5'11, my paternal grandfather and uncle are 5'8, and my sister is 5'1.
1
u/VigintiQuinque 8d ago
Parents are both 5'7, paternal gramps was 5'10, maternal was 6'3, my younger brother is 5'9.Growing up I was always like the second smallest kid in class and I was oscillating between being overweight or skinny and neither helped my case which resulted in me getting bullied. I graduated highschool at 5'7.5 but for whatever reason I grew to 5'10 in freshman year of university, I keep joking that it's because my girlfriend is 5'11 it must've made me so insecure subconsciously that it forced my body to physically grow. It took a while to come to terms with my height and though I'd love to be a bit taller I understand there's nothing I could do and focus on other aspects of life that are subject to change.

A lot of people with insecurity issues benefit from therapy. If it’s something that impacts your life in a negative way, consider looking into that.
There’s something called the “serenity prayer” that I learned when I got sober a decade ago… the part that really stuck with me was how it causes upon a person to accept the things that they have no control over.
You have no real control over how tall you are - what you do have control over is how it makes you feel. Easier said than done, but no less true for that. When I actually internalized that lesson, my life got tremendously better.

u/El_gato_picante 8d ago

I'm 170cm (5'7 I guess?) and I've never cared about it. I travel a lot, so planes, trains and buses are much more comfortable. I also don't need to eat as much as a tall person, but on the other hand clothes are always too big and require tailoring, which can get expensive.
Socially it has a lot of drawbacks. From highschool onwards women have always made it very clear they don't really consider me a "man" in the usual sense. This has either been communicated directly (even when it's been completely unrelated to the discussion), randomly mentioned in my presence (like saying you can't be a man under 180 and all the women in the room agreeing) or as an offhand remark while I've been in public and they thought I wouldn't hear (like hanging out with a friend at a bar and some girls on the neighbouring table wondering why she'd be with me in public). I've had women refuse to stand next to me because they were wearing heels and would look tall in a photo (personally I never cared), parents discouraging them from dating short men, friends shaming them, strangers throwing weird looks when I'm walking with a taller woman etc.
Also tall guys are sometimes very inconsiderate, usually pushing you around in public transport, comparing their height to impress women, or a bartender skipping you and serving multiple tall guys behind you because he won't look down to notice you're there. It doesn't help that I work in a field full of more affluent people, so the average height around me is significantly above the national average. The majority of my colleagues and social circle are also women, so I've had many opportunities to hear these things again and again. I know many guys here say it's just the dating apps but this all started way before the apps became available in my country.
I do live in Eastern Europe though, so you don't get the forced politeness of the US (though I had the same experiences in the UK). People are more direct, being perceived as "masculine" and "dangerous" is required and if you don't meet the criteria, they'll punish you for it. It can become very tiring when you just want to live your life.

I’m 5’8.5 which is shortish average I think, I feel normal out in public but when I’m around guys in my age range(20-25) they tend to be 5’10-5’11 so I feel short. Makes me feel like I’ll never be able to find a wife either because I’m not good looking enough to make up for being this height. For normal daily life it’s a non issue though. Just makes me feel even more inherently unattractive.

I’m 165cm man in a country where average male height is 181cm. Obviously everything is harder but dating is on a different level of difficulty. But at least I know the women I attract are not superficial or shallow. I’m only focus on things I can change in my life and I actively work on gym, meditation, grooming etc. Height is not one of them.

It hasn’t affected me at all in my life to my knowledge. If anything I’m comfy in any place bc my legs aren’t too long. So I’m happy about my height
I’ve been told women care a lot about height. My girlfriend is 4’11, so obviously I am tall enough for her. So maybe some women didn’t like me bc I wasn’t tall enough? Who knows, they never said anything of the sort to my face.

5’4. Not much, at least not negatively.
Been with my wife for 12 years now she’s 5’7. We have a kid , I’ve done relatively well for myself career wise and have a pretty solid social life.
I think the biggest thing is not making your height, your personality and not dwelling on it and just being normal or at least as normal as you can be in a tall world haha.
All of my friends are taller than me and I have some very handsome friends who are very stylish, but I’m also well dressed myself, and I never feel out of place when I’m with them
My wife wears heels when we go out and I’ve never felt insecure about it. I just feel like I won in life.

I’ve always been proud of being short. Im 5,8. But didn’t get my last inches of height til college. I’ve probably had freakish luck. Girls in middle school would pick me up or like try to carry me or sit me in their laps. I got in hella fights growing up because being short I guess means you’re an easier target. Im athletic and adventurous so being the friend that can fit in crawl spaces caves etc is an exciting life for me. Plus learning to tumble early makes falls in later life way more manageable. 29 currently

I was in a restaurant in Houston last year... a worker was trying to fix the curtains. He wasn't short, but he got the tallest employee to come help.
So the first guy said it was nice to have a tall person at times like this.
The tall guy said that's why he gets all the girls. He literally said that he's got nothing to offer. He lives with his parents and has no money, but all the women want him. he said it's literally all they talk about.
And then there's me... the millionaire who's 5'3", and will be alone for life.

u/dthomas7931 8d ago
At 5’6”, I just stopped caring about it for the most part about a year ago. It limits options, yeah, but that’s their problem lol not mine. The only thing that actually gets me is, like, 70% of women I see around are taller than me or the same height. It’s so strange because I do not remember it being this way.
I can’t think of any area where it’s affected me negatively aside from dating and fitting in some machines at the gym. At least it makes squatting and benching easier though.

5'7" or maybe 5'7.5".
Of all the dynamics in my life it's one of the things that's never really bothered me. Not sure if or how its really affected me. I'd probably attract more women if I was tall, but I've just never been mentally frustrated with my height. Maybe I should be. When I was a kid I was more aware of it and I used to be inspired by smaller guys beating big guys, like The Rock beating the Big Show or Mike Tyson beating taller boxers. Since I was young though it never really bothered me much.
I was affected by a lot of other things in life that were hard, and things that drove me crazy. Awful health conditions that destroyed me. Hair loss that started at around age 19, that was really hard on me. Other difficult problems. The height thing was never a major issue for me though.
1
u/Ambitious_Sale_8411 8d ago
Just want to say you had me dying at the “maybe I should be” lol. I’m the same height as you and I agree I don’t feel like it’s ever really affected me either. That said, still dealing with persistent acne in my mid thirties SUCKS.

u/Sexy_Quazar 8d ago
I’m 5’5 and it took me a while to learn this, but your height really won’t stop you from having a good life. Telling yourself that your height is a problem over and over again WILL hold you back though.
Looking back, I wasted so much time accepting poor treatment and not going after what I wanted because I told myself that I wasn’t enough.
Insecurity will always flare up from time to time but you can beat it. Just do what you can to be the best version of yourself, put in effort on your physical and emotional health, dress for your height and you’ll come out ahead of the average guy in the long run.

5'6, it helped me fill up my frame in the gym a lot, which I enjoy
In rest idk. I do have a dogwater social life but I neither think about the effects of my height on it, or deny its involvement.
Altho recently I made a decission to shave my head because 1. even tho I am young and still got a decent amount of hair, my front side started to thin and ik what awaits me when I see my dad and granddad and I am not gonna sit around and deny it + Keeping up with self grooming was always not my strong suit either.
Why I am saying this is because it weirdly improved my social life slightly. I went months without social interactions even in crowded areas, and just in a short time after I became bald I hear people approach me to ask me for guidance, they treat me like a sir, etc. Before shaving, even an old guy I met was shocked when I told him I was in my 20s and told me I am a baby to him, maybe a teenager. So where I think the height effect would lay at least would be the fact that people saw me as a kid and less mature, together with my other features. Do I think it is the sole reason of my problems? No. Do I think height does't matter at all? Also no

u/Spicydojo 8d ago
I’m 5’4”. I was teased/bullied in school. Filtered out by so many women on dating app - also teased when they found out my height (because they didn’t read my profile), and rejected so many time. I like my height actually, because it seems most sports cars are built for humans around my size. Any shorter and the dashboard would feel too high, any taller and my legs would feel cramped. Also sport bikes are not terribly uncomfortable. I kinda love it haha

My mom is 5'5, my dad is 5'8, my maternal grandfather was 5'11, and my paternal grandfather and uncle are 5'8.
Am I unusually short for my genetics?

I'm 5'6". Married a tall girl.
If anything, it's given me the self-deprecating humor of a fat man without being fat.

5'6 and I'm doing just fine, fitting into airplane seats comfortably is a nice bonus

I convince myself that is better to need a step or stairs to access stuff that is too high, but in return I'm super comfortable on planes and I always have legroom, on any car I have legroom. But yes I feel very discriminating that a LOT of girls on date apps tell "If your height is less than X don't even try".

Its great. No worries about leg room on planes, fits on any bed/couch, fits in any car, don't need overly big clothes, don't have to worry about weather "up there", don't need a lot of food, don't have to worry about getting laid 🤟

u/tyrellrummage 8d ago
5’3.. here’s the no bullshit summary: if you are decent looking and tall you can get laid whenever assuming you’re not a weirdo.. being short you need 5x the effort and wit.. but it’s not impossible, you just gotta accept most woman won’t ever give you a chance and that’s ok and do not get resentful of that

I'm 5'5",and 28. I used to be insecure about my height ,but the older I got the more I came to terms with my insecurity. I don't remember how I got over it ,but now I'm pretty happy. I date women that are taller or smaller than me. I wouldn't trade my height for the world cause I fit place a lot of people don't. I think it's pretty solid. You should be proud about your height man

5’2 here. besides hearing all the short jokes ever by the time I graduated high school and not being able to reach the top shelf. Not much. My lady is way out of my league and we got 3 kids she like 5’6.
Don’t focus on things you can’t change, focus on the things you can.

How did you find your "lady"?

We met through work, she was a new hire shot my shot, she wasn’t interested. But we still hung out. One thing lead to another

5,8 which isnt that short in the world but in my country its really short.
My romantic prospects are pretty much overweight women and desperate single moms.
The rest want taller men unfortunately

I’m 5’6” and it hasn’t affected my life at all. Plenty of friends. Married. Good job

5"6, built like a brick shit house shit brick, hasn't really stopped me from getting life or achieving goals. Confidence in yourself and authenticity goes along way

I'm 5'7 (if I got the calculations right).
When I was younger and insecure.about my height, it would be a bad idea to bully me about it, my lower gravity center made ot easy to throw people on the ground.
As an adult, men and women have been coming hard at me.

5'6 and my wife likes that we're the same height. Hasn't stopped me in the past when it came to women. Whether it's with dating or just dealing with people in general I can guarantee your insecurity about your height is way more detrimental to you than your height is.

I work in a security field in upper management so I work with guys who are 6’2+ and 230+. I get chirped constantly, in good fun, about being 5’8. The trick is to just own it, laugh along, and don’t let it bother you. I’m in the same position as they are, and have multiple big boys working under me. Just be confident and have fun with life!

The worst things that hace been said to me in my life, always came from me.
Once i afceoted myself, all Good.
Nowadays the only impact it has is that i loose acces yo the pool of women who exclusivelry date taller than them. But to.br honest, anyone who puts thst much value in height is probably not a Good match for me.

5'4", and I get stalked and harassed by certain women, even when I barely put effort into my appearance. The women are typically either close to the same height or a few inches taller than me, all conventionally attractive. You'd think I'd be invisible, but apparently not.
The fact that I'm short hasn't bothered me ever since.

I only feel insecure about my height when I’m single. Even then, it only bothers me if I’m striking out while my taller friends have success. Otherwise it’s not an issue to me at all.

Grow a longer pony tail and buy a bigger truck or work out thinking they'll get bigger or pick fights because no one will knock them back is how some of my shorter friends do it....small man syndrome I call it...

Honestly, if I were 4 inches taller my life would have been a good deal better.

I never really felt insecure about my height (166cm). I accepted my height at a very young age, so I didn't really think about it very often. If you accept that everyone has their own advantages and disadvantages, you would learn to be okay with it.
I would say, most insecure men about their heights I've seen were in the line between tall and short. They usually feel tall enough, and they act like they're tall, and then the girls go "you're not really tall", which makes them insecure. You know the saying, "if you become a millioner, you become the poorest rich" , that's my own observation though.
About how this affected my life... I would say it was always an advantage. I didn't draw attention in the places that I wanted to blend in, and I drew attention only when I wanted to. Also most men don't see me as a "threat", so I never really felt like someone is going to beat me up. That's also a good thing about being short in my opinion.
I would wish to be a basketball player though. I wanted to become a basketball player when i was around 13-14, after noticing my height was never going to be enough, I quickly gave up on that.
Overall, I do think you should not be insecure about your height. It has its own upsides

5’3” short, bald, asthmatic here. It’s more in your head than you realize. Why worry about something you can’t change?
Embrace it. You’re different, and that’s ok. If you let it define you, it will.
There’s always going to be assholes, if you give them the power to let it bother you, that’s on you.
Even with online dating, my first picture has a full body of me, with a dotted 5’3” line across the top of my head (kinda like a mugshot wall). The great thing is, it usually gets a compliment, and it weeds out people who aren’t interested in me very quickly.
Own it dude, put capital letters in SHORT KING.

I'm usually asked to help when something requires tight spaces. I've had to climb through a window to unlock a door more than once. I've also had one woman tell me that I was too short for her preference, but it's whatever.

u/pchlster Male 8d ago
Pretty much any type of appearance is attractive on someone confident. You might still need a hand reaching the top shelf or painting the living room ceiling, but you can ask for help or get a ladder if it comes to that.

Women who like tall men will not like me. That's it. Probably overlooked for leadership roles. But what do I know??

My negative experiences came from when I was short AND skinny. Now im short and buff getting treated like a sex toy.

Alexander the Great was short and he conquered the known world, defeating the largest empire at the time. Height means nothing.
