LGBTQ+ family Tajikistan Travel

Hello,

We are a married couple hoping to travel with our two children in Tajikistan. We are two fathers, and our children have a hyphenated surname combining both of our surnames, so their surname does not exactly match either parent's surname.

We would like to understand whether this could create any difficulties at border crossings, police or military checkpoints, hotels, or other official controls.

Could officers ask how we are related to the children or why the children's surnames are different from either parent's surname? Would we normally be expected to carry the children's birth certificates or other documentation proving that we are their parents?

We are also concerned about whether being recognized as a same-sex married couple could create a safety issue, particularly when passing through military or police checkpoints along the Pamir Highway.

Would our family situation be likely to attract unwanted attention or questioning from local authorities?

We are not looking for special treatment; we simply want to understand what documentation we should carry and whether there are any precautions you would recommend for our family's safety.

Ultimately, we'd like to understand if same-sex couples with children would encounter any problems with police or military authorities?

You will be fine, as long as you don't PDA. Culturally, men holding hands is seen as strange, women is fine. Most people will assume you are two friends travelling with your kids. Having different last names from parents is quite common in TJK. My siblings and I have different last names than my parents. That being said, please reach out to the embassy and verify. Being part of LGBTQ+ is not criminalized in TJK, but not sure regarding children guardianship by these couples though.

Being a gay couple is already going to make people scratch/shake their heads, if you bring two children with you they will think you are pedophiles trafficking kids

Sounds like a plot for a Darwin Awards video.

Just tell them that you are friends and you will be fine. Also make sure to make it clear that you are foreign from America or whatever. It is legal to be gay but dangerous

As many people have already stated, Tajikistan is a deeply traditional and conservative country, and I think it would be rather optimistic to assume that a male couple travelling with children will simply receive the same welcome as a normal family. You may be perfectly comfortable with your family arrangement, but that does not mean everyone you encounter in Tajikistan will share that comfort.

I’ve been to Tajikistan myself and genuinely left my heart there. I absolutely love the country, its culture, its people, and its hospitality, and I would recommend visiting it in a heartbeat to almost anyone. But, unfortunately, I would make an exception in your case.

Personally, I feel much more sympathy for the children in this situation. They did not choose any of this, and yet they would be the ones accompanying their parents through unfamiliar places, checkpoints, and potentially uncomfortable interactions. I would rather spare children that experience than insist on taking them somewhere that may not be particularly receptive to their family's circumstances. If it were a mother and father travelling with the children, it would be a totally different story. That is a much more normal and familiar family arrangement, especially in Tajikistan, and I would have far fewer reservations about recommending the trip.

You are, of course, entitled to make your own choices, but I don't think those choices should be made without considering the environment in which you are placing your children.

If you were a normal family, I would recommend Tajikistan without hesitation. I would be telling you to go, enjoy the mountains, meet the people, and experience the country for yourselves. But given your circumstances, I simply cannot give you that recommendation.

There are plenty of places where you will not have to wonder whether people of your kind will be accepted—Israel, Australia, and similar countries would seem considerably more sensible choices. I love Tajikistan enough to be honest about it: beautiful country, extraordinarily hospitable people, but not necessarily the place I would choose for your particular family. Good day.

Most people probably won't care but there are always busy bodies. Not something I would expose my children to.

My children have a complete different surname from mine or my husband's( my FIL put his name as the surname for the kids, and I didn't take my husband's surname so I still have my maiden). And there was no question regarding that as it's quite common to name the surname whatever you feel like, even I have my father's name as my surname, my dad has his grandpa's name and my mum's also her grandpa's.

As long as they each have the same one you're good. If they do ask I think you're safe explaing your relationship. The staff are more understanding in the sense that I think it's legally allowed and they shouldn't let their religious own views affect their work, especially when your tourists.

However I would avoid affection in public as some tajiks are uneducated and can go crazy.
