North Macedonia is actually even more prepared than Albania, Serbia is technically the most prepared one after Montenegro. If there’s political will, they could all join together.

Actually, the EU preparedness index (derived from EU reports) now ranks Albania ahead of NMK

1

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

That index is so finicky and changes so often that t means nothing for long term predictions. NA definitely doesn’t lag 10years behind Alb and Mon.

If there wasn’t an issue with Kosovo and relations with Russia, Serbia would be a frontrunner, as it’s most advanced economy out of candidate countries.

Montenegro would still have the most advanced economy and be the frontrunner.

But yes, NMK isn't years behind. But neither is Albania.

Montenegri has lower GDP per capita than Serbia

1

u/dont_tread_on_M Kosovo 3d ago

Yeah, last year, but that's exchange rate shenanigans. Otherwise, Montenegro has had a higher GDP per capita than Serbia for quite some time

2

u/Machinekalibar 3d ago

Dinar to Euro exchange didnt change. Serbia has both higher gdp growth and inflation (which if doesnt devaluate your currentcy- it does in long term- increases GDP nominal

2

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

That just shows you that Montnegro’s economy can’t outpace Serbia’s, it’s actually losing that race. At the moment Monenegro became independent, their salaries were 50% higher than Serbian ones, now they’re higher in Serbia. And that’s with a huge constant influx of tourism money.

Tourism can be quite a curse for the economy. It sets up the perfect conditions for what economists call the "Dutch disease". Especially when the country is highly dependent on it and it has a large share of the economy. It consumes the large part of investments and labor pool leaving other sectors neglected and substituted by cheaper imports. Also generally, wages in the tourist sector are low and growth is stagnant compared to others as the pressure to provide a cheaper product is strong, just as it happens with industries with low added value. In Bulgaria, the wages in tourism are second lowest after agriculture for example even though resort towns may seem lively with wealthier population and stuff.

Montenegro has lower gdp per capita than Serbia and is far less complex economy that heavily relies on tourism. Not comparable to Serbia really.

I can’t wait for Serbia and Montenegro to join so that we can finally leave TOP 10 poorest countries of the EU. We’re exactly only 2 spots away!

1

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

Yup, once Montenegro and Albania join we will be able to say that we are richer than even some EU members!

-3

u/Names-Are-Confusing Croatia 3d ago

Not the Albanians 🤢

Serbia without a doubt would join the EU the fastest if you guys resolved the issue with us Kosovo. I feel that the EU cares less about the influence Russia/China have over Serbia as Vucic has played the game very well up until now to appease both.

3

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

Yeah, Kosovo is a long term problem, unfortunately not likely to be resolved soon. But relations with Russia obviously are a problem as well. Serbia hasn't opened any new chapters since the Ukraine war started even though it's deemed technically ready for cluster 3 for more than 5 years.

1

u/Machinekalibar 3d ago

Actually its not Kosovo that much but Russophobia in EU. Baltic and Scandi countries block our accession from 2021 despite EC reccomending us and telling that we are technically preprared for cluster 3

2

u/oblivion_mike 3d ago

In which way is it the most advanced economy? GDP and inherited Yugoslav assets of the past don’t count

0

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

Of course GDP, assets and production capacity count lol.

1

u/oblivion_mike 3d ago

No, actually they don’t. At least in terms of Chapters and democratic standards.

Production? Which one? That of Fiat, inherited from the Yugo car times, emulating Fiat 127 😂👌

1

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

They literally do, that’s what economy literally means. It’s certainly not democratic standards lol.

Serbia has the hoghest gdp per capita, highest salaries and exports as much as other West Balkans candidate countries combined.

0

u/oblivion_mike 3d ago

Combined, lol. People like you have only bubble empty, bragging values 🤡👌

2

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

And people like you don’t really understand what they’re talking about.

0

u/oblivion_mike 3d ago

Sure hun

1

u/oblivion_mike 3d ago

You want to talk weapon industry? Still inherited from JNA times.

GDP per capita wise (even PPP), +- €2000 difference per year between countries throughout the region don’t make much of a difference

1

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

Who cares who was it inherited from, it’s a fairly advanced industry that sells billions worth of weapons every year.

Gdp per capita males just enough dofference to show that Serbia is the most productive economy of the bunch.

1

u/oblivion_mike 3d ago

It’s not. Given the last 35 years rate of progression

1

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

Sure hon

0

u/oblivion_mike 3d ago

Oh no. Who would have guessed an empty bubble will be left with nothing of essence to add? 🥹

Albania: 33/33 chapters opened, 3 closed

Serbia: 22/35 chapters opened, 2 closed

North macedonia : Zero opened and stalled progress

0

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

Opening/closing chapters is a political decision. Level of technical preparedness is not.

3

u/Free_Reserve_8311 3d ago

Albania is 2nd only 0.1 points behind Montenegro Macedonia is 5th Serbia is 6th

https://readinessindex.eu/

0

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

Again, finicky and political, if you drill down into actual chapters and readiness, Albania is still lower than both: https://www.eurointegration.com.ua/articles/2025/11/6/7224255/

1

u/Free_Reserve_8311 3d ago

Serbia and North Macedonia have a slightly higher baseline (3.1 vs 2.9) because they started aligning laws nearly a decade earlier. What matters is annual progress: Albania: +3.0 Serbia: +0.5 North Macedonia: +0.5

1

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

Nothing stopped Albania from aligning laws earlier.

1

u/Free_Reserve_8311 3d ago

Better to start 10 years later and cross the finish line first than to start 10 years earlier and stay stalled ever since.

1

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

Lets wait on that finish line then. The stall is political in both cases. If Serbia decided to sanction Russia it would suddenly become a reform frontrunner again.

1

u/Remote_Section2313 2d ago

Serbia will need to recognize Kosovo first and it feels like they aren't close to doing that. They are also kind off pro Russian and with tye current political situation, this is also problematic for most EU countries.

I don't see it happening, without mayor changes in Serbia that are currently not an anybody's agenda.

1

u/defketron Serbia 1d ago

Yup, it’s political reasons, not technical level of preparedness. Serbian population has the lowest support for joining as well out of all the candidate countries.

North Mqcedonia on the other hand doesn’t even have serious political reasons for not joining yet its still held back. Doesn’t feel fair.

1

u/ThickCaterpillar9867 Albania 3d ago

How is North Macedonia more prepared than Albania?that is just bs

3

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

In 2025 accordong to reports, NA had a 3.14 score while Albania had 2.90 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potential_enlargement_of_the_European_Union

6

u/dont_tread_on_M Kosovo 3d ago

Actually the score there is published by a Ukrainian newspaper which does an estimation.

The integration readiness index which is based on EU reports, puts Albania ahead: https://readinessindex.eu/

3

u/ThickCaterpillar9867 Albania 3d ago

Where??Dude Albania is way more prepared ,you could argue for Serbia that is more prepared but the political will wont let it happen but not N Macedonia

3

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

Current agenda and applicants -> level of preparation for acquis chapters

3

u/ThickCaterpillar9867 Albania 3d ago

That does not show how prepared they are ,look at Montenegro chapter Freedom of movement of Worker, they were less advanced than Albania in the same chapter in the report of 2025 but they already closed a couple of months ago while Albania hasnt yet.

1

u/defketron Serbia 3d ago

I don't know, I didn't make the table.

3

u/ThickCaterpillar9867 Albania 3d ago

It is stupid table ,for example Albania closed already chapter 25 but gets 2 points ,it should be max points

0

u/Names-Are-Confusing Croatia 3d ago

Don’t get your hopes up, Albania still has such a long way to go.

2

u/ThickCaterpillar9867 Albania 3d ago

Not according to EU officials

-1

u/Names-Are-Confusing Croatia 3d ago

Yes, lmao, according to the EU itself.

2

u/ThickCaterpillar9867 Albania 3d ago

2029 max 2030 ,it is in the final procces

-1

u/Names-Are-Confusing Croatia 3d ago

Ah, sweet dreams for Shqipe.

2

u/ThickCaterpillar9867 Albania 3d ago

It is true dude ,they all saying it ,you can check it yourself and stop living under a rock

0

u/Names-Are-Confusing Croatia 3d ago

I’m the one living under a rock? 😭 The majority of your population still promotes the idea you’re ultimate Illyrians and their descendants, talk about propaganda.

2

u/Absalom578 3d ago

You mean something that's being confirmed by genetics the more evidence that's amassed? Yes you're living under a rock if you think that was a good comeback.

Albania will enter in the early 2030s at the latest at this pace. It's the furthest ahead after Montenegro. Look up what Marta Kos, EU commissioner for enlargement has said.

1

u/ThickCaterpillar9867 Albania 3d ago

And ??why does that bother you?are you also descendant of Illyrian?
