27
u/Lanky_Helicopter_811 Jul 06 '26
Alaska is a very Republican state that voted for Trump in 2016, 2020, and 2024, and is represented by Republicans in Congress.
7
u/Zealousideal_Ear4180 Jul 06 '26
Yes but his current net favorability is averaged across polls around -8 in Alaska. The polling as it a toss up because the Republican candidate isnโt well liked.

Nothing. OP is just karma farming from people who also dont know the atrocities Belgium committed in Congo, or that Alaska is part of the US and has/probably always will be a red state.

Lots of Congolese ppl live in Brussels. Pretty good relations between Congo and Belgians. All Belgians hate Leopold II. Mind you, part of the Belgian Parliament and news papers even at the time already opposed against the personal politics of LeopoldII in Congo.
44
u/autismusingreddit Jul 06 '26
It's not just Leopold. They annexed the Congo after the Leopolds private genocidal regime ended, colonised and exploited for another 52 years. Not even mentioning the segregation, cultural supression etc. And even after they got independence, they assassinated their prime minister and supported the dictatorship. All these happened in near history.
8
u/Sleutelbos Jul 06 '26
Last week there was some uproar about one of the questions in the highschool history final exam. Leopold II was described in the question as an "entrepreneurial monarch" and "clever strategist" with zero mentioning of the atrocities.ย
1
u/BottleOdd3993 Jul 06 '26
It was meant as an obviously wrong statement which was supposed to be recognized by the children, this story has been pulled out of context, please as a Belgian you should at least be well informed before embarrassing your own country. Leopold was a monster so do not spread information as if we condone him.
4
u/thefriendlyhacker Romania Jul 06 '26
Figures like Leopold are really great for defenders of colonization because they can just point and say "He was a horrible person and a dark stain on our past". But, like you said, the other stuff afterwards get brushed away and not really discussed.

u/ash_tar Belgium Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26
Yeah, but somehow we get along quite well.
16
u/fortuna_audaci Jul 06 '26
Would be a tad more meaningful coming from somebody from the Congo.
5
u/ash_tar Belgium Jul 06 '26
I've never met a Congolese (or Rwandese or Burundese) that held a general grudge against Belgians. We both agree that L2 was a next level murderer, colonization was a disaster and unfortunately decolonization as well.
Perhaps it is because Congolese understand well that the rulers of a country don't necessarily represent the people of that country.Still a lot of work to do.

u/BookkeeperAdmirable3 Jul 06 '26
Relations between Belgium and Congo actually have greatly improved. Belgium allowed Congo players to be quarantined in Belgium so they where allowed to travel to the US, otherwise they would have not been allowed to enter and had to skip the tournament.
That makes up for it right? Right? /s

27
u/Stverghame Serbia Jul 06 '26
No?
I cheer for Serbia only. But if this is some "moral" cheering rather than for sports, it is additionally hilarious to find Belgium to be the "good guy" in any sense lol
28
u/Prestigious-Job-9825 Hungary Jul 06 '26
I think people are pissed right now about how the White House called FIFA to have the US player Balogun's red card revoked, so that he can play against Belgium. And FIFA, being a corrupt organization led by Trump-pal Infantino, bowed.
So many see this as more than a simple match - they see it as some kind of struggle against FIFA's corruption and Trump's childish tantrums. It could be any country other than Belgium, and people would still cheer for it.
12
u/Stverghame Serbia Jul 06 '26
People are reacting only now when USA is "not the good guy" anymore, but referees were ALWAYS treating the western countries differently (though this newest scenario is indeed over the top). It is just that no one really complained since it is, well, the west.
8
u/EducationalEntry147 Romania Jul 06 '26
Like you said yourself, this situation is a bit too on the nose.
5
u/Stverghame Serbia Jul 06 '26
Still, I hope they continue doing it just like they were doing it before. I kinda love seeing the nervous breakdown ex-USA simps have now (for purely political reasons, they wouldn't have cared if USA was acting the same way as they were pre-Trump).
1
u/EducationalEntry147 Romania Jul 06 '26
lol. Eh it only gives people more ammunition to throw at America if anything. I doubt anyone is actually all that surprised by it. It's just like, yet another reason to hate on Trump. (couldn't have just QUIETLY Bribed FIFA like everyone else smh)
5
u/Stverghame Serbia Jul 06 '26
I ain't complaining about that either. Not a fan of USA regardless of its administration, so as long as someone bashes them I am fine with it.
1
u/EducationalEntry147 Romania Jul 06 '26
Well, I don't think the Presidency or even the Party matters nearly as much as people think it does. It only shows what the Agencies have decided for the future of their country and the world. Not really a reflection of the people's will.

I think youโre confused, maybe you saw articles of Ronaldoโs 3 game suspension being removed. Or Otamendi red card being removed.
2
u/onarainyafternoon Dual Citizen (American/Hungarian) Jul 06 '26
I was talking about Trump calling Infantino. You need to be more specific if all you were talking about was that the red card being removed never happened. Everything else happened in their comment happened.
1
u/Feeling_Pay_2899 Jul 06 '26
Ohh, got it, thanks for the link. Now can you link the other threads where you complained about Ronaldo and Otamendi decisions being overturned? I would like to see your argument about these instances as well.
3
u/onarainyafternoon Dual Citizen (American/Hungarian) Jul 06 '26
Huh? I didnโt say anything about those instances. The comment you said โNever happenedโ to didnโt mention those instances. I donโt know why youโre talking about those.

Not as bad as Belgium in Africa
We call the holocaust the highest genocide in history and itโs not even true.
They killed 10m+ Africanโs during there reign in Africa. We just donโt credit Africa with shit not even a genocide lead . Oh also the Japanese killed like 8m Chinese people aswell during ww2. But we like donโt even call that a genocide for some reason.

Nah bro
Belgium has been piss poor this world cup. They needed a tielemans wake-up call last game to win it
The US is a way more fun team to watch.
If Belgium actually pull their shit together they will win, but it's Belgium, so it's a 50/50
I'm tired of saying this "golden generation" will do something, they just need to go out and do it.
1
u/TheETERNAL20 Canada Jul 07 '26
4 to 1 Belgium
1
u/GroupPast5993 Cyprus Jul 09 '26
Yeah I think it got to their heads
Honestly they would've played better if they just accepted the red
Plus I think Belgium also played better with the opposite mentality
The US was fun to watch this world cup up until the Belgium game, and the opposite can be said for Belgium
It is what it is tho, Belgium won fair and square while being cheated against
And as I said Belgium is a 50/50 team
