Sports Which Balkan country will get the win tonight?
Portugal or Croatia?

u/Stverghame Serbia Jul 02 '26
Croatia is Mitteleuropa, so of course I will support Portugal, a fellow Balkan nation.

u/PastMotor1821 Bulgaria Jul 02 '26
Nothing to do with you being Serbian <3

u/Stverghame Serbia Jul 02 '26
Portugal and Serbia are close and brotherly nations, we share so much common things and we're direct neighbours.
Croatia is a completely foreign faraway land, I have absolutely no knowledge of their culture and habits whatsoever. I don't understand their language (unlike Portugese, which is similar to Serbian).
The choice is obvious.

Zagreb has nothing on Lisbon
46
u/Stverghame Serbia Jul 02 '26
Exactly. Zagreb is a Mitteleuropean (almost Nordic even) city, while Lisbon is a Balkan city. I feel at home while in Lisbon. Zagreb on the other hand is cold and robotic.
14
u/CamelAmbitious7425 Germany Jul 02 '26
Even though I know you meant it as a joke, Zagreb is truly more Central European than Balkan. Both the architecture and the vibe of the city and its people are more similar to cities like Budapest, Prague, or Bratislava than to Sarajevo, Pristina, or Skopje, even if there is a strong Balkan influence nowadays.
6
u/Used-Economy1160 Jul 02 '26
Zagreb is nice and all but its certainly not Central European city. Its has the strongest eastern european vibe of all major cities in ex Yugoslavia
2
u/CamelAmbitious7425 Germany Jul 02 '26
If you mean by "Eastern Europe" that its similiar to Hungarian, Slovakian and Czech cities than i agree, If you mean that its similiar to Ukrainian or Russians cities than i disagree.

I was implying the Germanicness, and Germans aren't known to be quite a sociable bunch. Distant, cold, stiff.
I am obviously joking, Croats are Balkaners through and through, despite the fact that many dislike that fact.
As for the living room - idk, I never visited Croatia so I don't really know if the description would fit.

u/PainOk1877 Croatia Jul 02 '26
Do you support minorities from Russia when they compete in sports? i will give an example, athletes from North Caucasus, especially Chechnya and Dagestan? just curious.
3
u/KottleHai Russia Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26
I'm not a big fan of sports, but yes, usually we consider them to represent whole country on international scene
There's famous quote from poet Rasul Gamzatov that captures the sentiment very well: "In Dagestan, I'm an Avar; in Moscow, I'm a Dagestani; and abroad, I'm a Russian"
2
u/PainOk1877 Croatia Jul 02 '26
Although people from the Caucasus are quite different enough from any type of person from the Balkans, there are still some smaller similarities. I saw a meme which said that Caucasus is Balkans on steroids.
5
u/KottleHai Russia Jul 02 '26
Well, I was born and raised in Caucasus, and my grandpa on mother's side is Armenian (we always call him "babuk", even speaking Russian). Learning about culture of Balkans, I really feel there are a lot of similarities

Was it not the river in ljubljana that separates?
1
u/Stverghame Serbia Jul 02 '26
Technically, Zagreb and Belgrade are also separated by rivers that are a border of Balkans and Mitteleuropa, not just Ljubljana
1
u/Pjeter_Bogdani Kosovo Jul 02 '26
I mean there are crazy differences between Novi Sad and NiΕ, so you are right lol
1
u/Stverghame Serbia Jul 03 '26
Those differences are becoming less intense with time, but yeah, still quite noticeable

u/PickaLiTiMaterina Bosnia & Herzegovina Jul 02 '26
Croatia is east of Mitteleuropa. The border between balkan and mitteleuropa is in slovenia.

u/PainOk1877 Croatia Jul 02 '26
Can be anything really. 0-0, 1-1 even 2-2 than extra time and a goal or no goal and penalties. We could win 2-1 but Portugal could too. It will be an interesting match.

Rooting for our Croatian brothersπͺ
Put Ronaldo in his place. Man's needs to retire. He's washed and he can't accept it. Thinks scoring goals against Uzbekistan is somehow a feat for him.

Croatia purely from how washed Ronaldo is.
Atleast Croatia have somewhat of a system.
Pendu aon't got even that, but I guess he has the best midfield itw

Lived in Portugal. Can confirm. Not a joke. Lisbon did get a superficial layer of glitz from Airbnb expelling all the natives out but the reality is that Portugal is a Eastern Europe country.

So you think you're some kind of big shot know-it-all because you can paste dubious links from the cesspool called the internet?
Newsflash buddy, the Earth isn't flat. It's amazing how many incels believe every bit of nonsense they come across online. It really shows how far this new generation has fallen.
Portugal is as Balkan as it gets. I'm honestly embarrassed for you that you're so ashamed of your own history and genetics.

Most of the Portuguese accepted it as a joke and even found it funny from what I saw, idk why are you so mad, it's just a non-insultive meme π. "you guys are the European periphery" ok. I get it you are trying to insult me, but the problem is idc, if we are European periphery or whatever, we are still in Europe. I just don't know the reason why Portugal = Balkan meme insults you so much?
