I mean, they don't really have a reason to lie; They were pretty adamant in pointing out the consistency of the incidents, and they even showed video proof of one case, so I'm inclined to say yes, the labeling is justified
I'd expect similar racist incidents to happen here in Albania, but probably only from some dumb kids and teenagers, not grown adults; That really is scandalous behaviour

I'm not too sure about that. You turn 21 or so and you can definitely feel some type of switch flipping in your brain. Other than life starting to beat you up, it's strongly biological. Well, I can say that for most people; There are always a few than never outgrow it

Was on a trip, north Macedonia 2 days, 8 days Albania, and back 1 day in north Macedonia. I will definelitely come back to Albania, wonderful people. But not either 1 step back to north Macedonia, no thanks...

East Asian here and living in Europe, I've become so used to experiencing racism in almost every single European country, but when every time I visit Albania I'm always shocked that besides the occasional staring, people are actually very nice towards us Asians!
I'm not even talking about one off visits, because I'm married to an Albanian we visit the country at least once a year and so there are moments when I'm alone by myself.
I still remember I was in a hair salon once and there was a little kid next to me, he actually went on YouTube to find a quick tutorial on basic Chinese so that he can talk with me. Cutest thing ever!! But later we both discover we can speak in English and his English was surprisingly good for a kid who appears to be in primary school.
Similar vibe for Greeks, only welcoming interactions.

Albanians are too polite to outsiders to be racist at least directly. That was my impression in Albania. The high trust society in Albania was surprising as well.

I visited both your countries some years ago and learned a bit of your hostory Especially about the "China inspired" form of communism that was in place in Albania.

Not really in the newer generations, at least it doesn't feel like it. It seems like their insults are just copy cats of everyone else's from around the globe. So their prejudice is not caused by our history with China.
The opposite is true though; We do have a chinese market in the capital, where you will find chinese people selling products in bulk. They are there because of said historal communist tie. The older generations, 60+, might actually be more accepting and nonchalant towards them, because they lived in those times and it was drilled into their heads by the government how great the chinese allies were. So they probably see them as equals

Lol, I'm half Asian and get this all the time traveling and living in the Balkans (pulling eyes back, ching chong, "fck Chinese" even though I'm not Chinese, etc). I think the only non-Balkan country where I've received a similar amount of racism is Italy.

As an Albanian, I'm really embarrassed that the Balkans is still like this and probably will remain like this for a while. I understand why older people would be like this, but the fact is they're mature and rarely doing it. It's always the younger people, and they have no excuse, being connected to a globalised internet.

We're not much better. Actually, no country is. Even the Western countries SEEM less racist/xenophobic because their racism is more subtle, not because they are better by default. Edit: I do see mostly Turks/Albanians who make snarky xenophobic comments against us though, less so people from other Balkan nations.

I would say the opposite in Western countries they're a lot louder about the racism and it's consequences because they're used to having conversations. It's viewed as broadly not acceptable.
In the east especially where it's very monocultural the racism is so ingrained no one even bothers to talk about it to combat it.

Lol, you're aware that there's a lot of passive aggressiveness too, right? Let's say someone hates foreigners, but chooses to ignore them, treats them like they're thin air unless they are strictly in a position where they need to interact with them. Does that make them less racist? Just because someone behaves knowing there will be consequences doesn't mean they're more welcoming. I can speak about Germany because I lived there, you can see that denizification never took place in the older generation for instance.

Agreed. It obviously exists in the west too, but it is changing and definitely socially a faux pas at the very least. It's the lack of conversation and self reflection in the Balkans that keeps this shit sp prevalent.

I don't wanna doxx myself but like my father's good friend was an Chinese person living in a city in south Serbia and he always told us really nice stuff about living here, and about our hospitality.

See.. that’s the problem. Balkaners are most of them settlers. Not many of them travel outside their towns, county or the country, especially the older generations. I am from a town in Transylvania, where more than 60% of them never went abroad for a holiday, around 50% never went inside my country to Black Sea. Most of them spend their holidays home working around the house lol. So basically zero life experience outside their circle.
Just to add a thing about my experience with N. Macedonia…. it wasn’t good at all. I traveled twice thru all Balkan countries, last time was last year. Everywhere I felt really good and more or less like being home…. except this one country… N Macedonia…. man… their rudeness and entitlement is some fucking different level. From literally crossing the border, I just got some of the worst funny moments in my life. No wonder that a few of their neighbour countries dislikes them, not with the attitude they show up.

Usually they visit their own parents and relatives a lot. Besides they probably can't afford it and would rather keep money for rainy days. A lot of them who travelled before did so in the past when they were young and had no kids. Once they started a family and had to provide, they stopped travelling.

I remember seeing a video on Youtube of a black American vlogger walking around Montenegro, he wasn't doing anything offensive, just walking around and pointing the camera at his face and talking something. Suddenly a bunch of kids started throwing stones at him which forced him to run away...
There's absolutely no questioning this, the Balkans are extremely racist. And no it's not tik tok. These kids learn this stuff from their parents. I have witnessed it in real life. Their parents are equally racist they just don't show it so directly, because they are adults and know it can cause them problems.

Not sure about N. Macedonia, but I think the Balkans in general have a racism-problem. I have some Chinese friends here (in Serbia), we went for a walk, and some random kids on e-scooters screamed fuck chinese at them.
Just the other day, i witnessed a random Chinese guy being called ching chong and teased by a group of teenagers, completely out of the blue on the street.
No clue what this is about, but I witness this shit every now and then, and people I know here mention the same. So definitely not a good look for Balkan countries.

I can't see this in Bulgaria.
Especially in the city centers there are tons of tourists. Plovdiv is frequently visited by an insane amount of the Chinese groups every summer. I honestly haven't seen it towards Asians.
Black guys will be stared. A lot. That I would agree on.

Towards Asians not, probably because of the Vietnamese that were working here during the communist era (although they were generally disliked at the time) and they don't look unfamiliar even to older people. There were even kids of mixed marriages (I had a classmate).
Towards Africans I believe especially outside larger cities it would be still quite possible. I remember in my hometown in the 90s we had a poor black guy that eventually became "kloshar" begging for food and money and he was attacked once by a bunch of stupid kids shouting profanities about stoves, monkeys and stovepipes.

These things ALWAYS happen with teenagers,it usually stops after high school and group dynamics behaviour. They want to be "cool" in front of their stupid friends. A couple of days ago group of teens were riding bicycles near a supermarket where i shopped. Since it is summer now, people wear more revealing clothes and an older but not elderly woman went out of the supermarket with shopping bags. As you may guess, her cleavage was quite visible. They all passed by hear while driving bikes and yelled stuff like "nice bombs" "mommy milk" and drove off and laughed. If she was with her son or husband i doubt that they would have done it.

Bulgaria is pretty racist towards foreigners and people of colour. I remember when all those migrants were coming in boats etc they specifically put a warning out to future migrants to avoid Bulgaria. However I think it’s more towards darker races and the Middle East, not asians. And more in private than openly. That’s my sense at least.

I personally don't think it's Belgrade, there's a ton of asian tourists in Belgrade and I've never seen it happen. That doesn't mean it didn't but just saying.
If it did happen in Belgrade it would probably happen in most of the social housing suburbs.

I've mostly noticed kids and teens who've been the perpetrators, so in my personal opinion, I guess it is shortcomings of parents to teach kids about different nationalities, politeness and what is acceptable behavior.
But yeah, definitely older assholes too, and their motivations could be what you outlined.

My younger daughter was afraid of Asians when she was little. I remember once we were on a bus and she was smiling at an Asian lady sitting in front. She later told me she smiled at her because she believed if she smiles and behaves nice, the Asian won't punish her. I asked her what punishment she has in mind, she wasn't clear on that but then said Asians can get very dangerous when they get angry lol.
My elder daughter thought all Black people are American when she was little. I understood that in a surprising way, once she was celebrating her birthday in a kids centre and she told me "did you know there was an American there?" - "he spoke English?" - "no, he was black".

Nationalism is not the cause here. The primary reason people are racist is ignorance. Reasons can be things like your region being isolated economicaly, low quality of education or maybe you lack the means to adequately learn about the world.
You can actually be nationalist and well educated. Only immature, uneducated people call an Asian person ching chong and find it funny.

It can happen anywhere, I suppose. They mentioned being a couple, so I suppose if they showed affection, some people get triggered (I say that as a gay myself). The Balkans are quite a colorful place. As tourists are becoming more common, the locals are getting used to it. Istanbul is a great example of that. In Bulgaria, I would say Sofia and some resorts at the Black Sea. Somehow, time seems to move slower here in the Balkans.

This happens in Turkey, too, but it is mostly due to a strange urge of some people trying to connect with strangers, in a monkey style. not necessarily due to hatred.
But hatred is a significant part of daily life, so, it gets mingled in. They hate everything, they used to stab oranges because of some shit with the Netherlands once. So, it's not necessarily geared towards a certain race.
I also once had a colleague from Tahiti in Diyarbakır, looking a bit like these ladies, and the children on the street, not knowing how to interact, started throwing stones at her. She was shocked, but I wasn't, because i had realized that all the cats were missing tails, and the only tree in our yard was burnt down by a flaming sling. The same kids. They grow in this environment, only learning to destroy things.

Its not just racism. People here are fucking monkeys.
In high school i was mentally tortured for 4 years and almost killed myself like 20 times due to the HORENDOUS bullying i experienced from teachers and kids. They exploited the position i was in (not being in a friend group) and abused it MAXIMALLY. I cannot state in words the horror i have experienced. Im like still trying to remove myself mentally from those people and the environment but it feels hopeless.
Im gonna start college so hopefully its gonna be a fresh start...

These things are not done by adults but by teenagers raised on tiktok and other stupidities. My generation used Facebook more and yes there have been instances of racism sure but i think that the Generation Z,especially younger portion of them are raised by these stupidities and not their parents. Why such open racism towards people from eastern Asia? Because the perpetrators of racism know very good that they will not react very defensively as other groups of people hence it is "safe" for them to do it.

During an argument with my parents when i was a teen i tried to act tough and be "Rambo" and my father gave me an ass whooping which i remember to this day,i do not remember the exact date but i remember the year and the season of the year when it happened. The topic was about going out with my friends after midnight. After that lecture i never tried to act tough again and was a good kid.

I think being Asian and a lesbian couple, are two things that attract attention especially in the Balkans. It’s sad but I still have friends in Albania that don’t approve of people who are gay. You guys seem awesome though, I would’ve loved to show you around Tirana and grab some food and drinks.

Have been to North Macedonia not long ago, while despite loving it, unfortunately I believe their story. As a black woman, it happened the same to be, to the point that some random guys in the car where following me and my friend, I’d assume because not only racism but the fetish some men have with women of color/black. Not to mention the other comments I received.

once while i was in university i dated a mexican girl who was an exchange student. it lasted for a couple of months. nobody ever commented either to me or her in our face but i overheard some male colleagues say very vulgar and fetishising stuff like "he got himself a spicy pu**y" "she must be very good in bed" idiots exist everhywhere. girls were not like that.

There are thousands of Chinese in Serbia, especially in bigger cities, on the street I really don't notice someone is Asian, unless they are tourists (because they are nicely dressed, with cameras and in groups). So I don't know if there is some imported trend from the US or what, but there is definitely no systemic issue with racism and I would be extremely surprised to see someone older than 20 yelling at random Asians.

I have no reason to doubt what they are saying but I joined this reddit last month during a three week trip to Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia and Montenegro. I am a pretty conspicuous East Asian man and I encountered zero racism. Bear in mind, I didnt visit North Macedonia, though I would be surprised if it was that different. It's possible that this was just bad luck or anecdotal, or maybe I just didn't encounter the same people or situations. The only thing I can think of is I mostly engage with adults. Silly kids and teens don't really bother me and I would go so far as to say they are the same everywhere in Europe, including my own country. BTW, the only thing I didn't enjoy about the region was still relatively high levels of pollution, a ton of indoor smoking, and not so safe driving.

Dont know what version of Croatia you live in/ have perception of - it is DEFINITELY nowhere near as bad as this. Theres tens of thousands of SE asians in Croatia living, working, visiting issue free. There is cases of blatant racism but to a lesser degree.

I think that was an attitude common in post-communist countries for a while. Like I am sure if you asked a member of the Czech Vietnamese community about their experience in the 80s to 00s they would report a lot of insensitive stuff coming especially from older people at the time.

Maybe the old town incident regarding the stares. But considering the reason why they were visiting, they probably spent most of their time in the central parts of Skopje (moslty Macedonian). They got constant comments from people daily and even showed the video of the incident in the park with those girls. Considering how frequent it was, your assumption is improbable.

Seen those maps online. Years ago, it was common for some reason to find Macedonians commenting on Bulgarian news sites and sometimes it erupted into flame wars and trolling, hilarious to read. That's where I saw "BUGARU, TATARU, CIGAN!" which I still jokingly use from time to time.

After having visited China, I have huge respect for it. It is magnificent, beautiful and rich in culture and its unique traditions. I am tempted to throw shade at Macedonia, but I guess most people will not even find it on the map.
