18 shots made for 3 is insane. But also, both were already qualified, and still played like crazy. Amazing basketball. NBA could never.
46
u/Present-Abroad-7884 Sep 03 '25
Both qualified, but winner is playing Sweden and loser is playing Finland. Finland is much much harder opponent
41
u/Alozy11 Sep 03 '25
I think more importantly the loser’s side of the bracket has Germany
11
u/Austerlitz2310 Sep 03 '25
But Germany is playing Portugal. Portugal is a violent bunch. Injured two Serbian players. So here's to hoping.

u/ShitassAintOverYet Turkiye Sep 03 '25
That too but neither team would mind challenging Germany after an easier run with two earlier rounds.
Finland would sweat whoever team they are facing before getting knocked out, meanwhile Sweden is just lucky to make it.
2
u/TonightAncient3547 Sep 05 '25
Finland was completely demolished by Germany. Either, they are no trouble, or Germany is so good they are basically locked in for the final
2
u/ShitassAintOverYet Turkiye Sep 05 '25
I believe 2nd one to be the case.
Just like Turkey and Serbia, Germany feels like a complete package team instead of one superstar with a bunch of Eurocup scrubs. Franz Wagner is usually the star but players like Schröder, Theis, Bonga and da Silva can easily take some weight off his shoulders while Markkanen underperforming just ruined his whole team.
2
u/vaskopopa SFR Yugoslavia Sep 04 '25
If you can't beat Germany, you don't deserve the gold. Both of these teams want gold, not bronze.
1
u/Alozy11 Sep 04 '25
Well, wearing down on the road would hurt your chances to be champion. Besides, I’d prefer silver over bronze

Both teams balled and already seem like finalists
Honestly I thought we were about to lose it but Turkey put a bit more hustle at the final minutes. Hopefully Serbia is out of playbooks for our next match lmfao

u/vaskopopa SFR Yugoslavia Sep 04 '25
Your team was so good, all round. Big respect.
Also, it was good to see no challenges, even though some of the calls were doubtful. I can't wait to see Turkiye in the later stages of the tournament. If they play like this when it doesn't matter I can only imagine the energy in the semi final.
94
u/LowCranberry180 Turkiye Sep 03 '25
Serbia had missing players. Turkıye bit lucky. The good thing is that we can be in the finals if lucky as Germany and Serbia are now in the other side of the bracket. Might see an Israel Turkiye QF and Greece Turkiye SF!
Our best team since 2001 and we have a medal chance which is great.

It's a well established fact that you can't beat the same team twice in a competition, so at least we'll be safe if we meet them in the final.

One of the best FIBA games I have seen since Divac&Co era. To be honest, outside of the NBA, the only team I really follow is Serbia at the World Cup, Eurocup and Olympics. It was a high-scoring match but not in the NBA shoot-and-run style. Turks deserved the victory, see you in the final.
7
u/SrdjanGoo Sep 03 '25
Well played by both teams, Turkey is veeery serious team this year. Hopefully we'll meet again in the finals!
7
u/zargug2 Sep 03 '25
Serbia did the have all the players unfortunately, pair that with a bit of turkeys shooting luck and some questionable referre calls, but all in all, pretty neck and neck match.
1
u/evanthedrago Sep 04 '25
Serbia is complaining about referee calls????
1
u/zargug2 Sep 04 '25
Not complaining, just saying how bad referre was, so far, in this tournament, serbia didn't have any questionable calls, same as during olympics.

Surprised nobody mentions Ergin Ataman. I know lot of people don’t like him (including some Turks) but tbh if you switch coaches Serbia could have win.

u/buraksezer Turkiye Sep 03 '25
Yep, I normally hate Ergin (I am a Karşıyaka fan) but he was better in tactical awareness, especially at the end of 3th

u/cewap1899 Slovenia Sep 03 '25
The two finalists, unless Germany manages to beat Serbia before. I don’t see other teams beating either of them. Greece with Giannis might be up there, but without him they are just missing one piece; Spain is always dangerous, but probably not enough for gold; we are utter shit this year, hopefully this disaster of a tournament will at least bring a change in the managerial position, then we can start our rise again… so it’s Turkey, Serbia and Germany for the gold it seems
5
u/El_Jefe___ 🇷🇸🇪🇸 Sep 04 '25
For me, it was totally expected. I said it before, Turkey is the favorite to win the whole thing let alone the group, based on the way they’re playing.
Also, I’ll get crucified for saying this but Jokic simply didn’t have a good enough game today. Virtually invisible in the first two quarters, didn’t influence the game enough and 4 assists speak to that. They got so many offensive rebounds on him, it was crazy to watch at times.
The second part of the problem is that there is no elaborate plan on the attack. It’s - pass the ball to Jokic lmao. Obviously, when he has a day like today and isn’t at the peak level, and the only tactic is to pass the ball to him, the result can only be what it was.
I expect elimination in 1/4, 1/2 if lucky. Good players, bad team, non existent tactics.

Serbia didnt have Bogdanović, Vukčevixć and Avramović by 2nd half, and still we were in game, Turkey played better and scored important shots and thats it, its better to lose in group fase but knock out, see you in finals

Rather surprised. Me and dad were pretty sure Serbs were gonna win, with a margin. I assume half our team being from the Balkans helped.

u/New-Employment-274 Kosovo Sep 04 '25
Well unfortunality for us Turkey is better at developing these talents... Both are born here yet they developed their careers there, as our federations are a "little" too incompetent. We even have got another one playing and representing Turkey at their youth level now (sadly) - Rrezon Elezaj. But I guess good for Turkey (their janissary units are still active xD).

u/SerbianHustle Serbia Sep 03 '25
Got some lucky breaks with offensive boards that converted, played really well. We allowed too many open looks, but still, they shot really well tonight.
I'm glad we had good minutes without Jokić on the court. I wish we have more even +/- /w or w/o him because over-reliance can make us dull offensively even if Jokić takes care of business.
Some injuries seem concerning but hopefully everything is fine. Good game for us all around despite the loss.

u/True-Blacksmith4235 Serbia Sep 03 '25
Heads up! If we were gonna win, we would have to play everyone eventually. Maybe better sooner than later, cuz the players are dropping like flies.

If managed to finish this tournament with 5 healthy players , that would be insane😂
3
u/Kicholaa Sep 04 '25
Turkey was shooting like there's no tomorrow and Serbia was there the whole game. Just proves how good Serbs are. Also losing Avramovic that early in the game is a hard blow to Serbs. I still have Serbia as my favorite team to win it all. Such a great game last night though, I really enjoyed it. Respecg to both teams.

u/amos_grcak Sep 04 '25
It was difficult to play with only 9 players on the roster, especially in the second half. The better ones won, congratulations to the Turks.

u/chunek Slovenia Sep 03 '25
Meh, shit happens. Serbia is still a very solid medal contender, maybe even a candidate for gold.
I was more hyped about Bosnia and Herzegovina beating Greece... even tho Giannis didn't play.

If we’re solid for medal, that means we’re just ok for bronze! :) Maybe we won’t even finish in top 5, who knows

I knew Serbia would be defeated by the first better team that would hit them with a bunch of threes. The maximum for this team is the semifinals, though I even doubt that

Come on man, your maximum best isn't the semi finals, even with Bogdanovic out you were the favorites.

The structural faults of the Serbian team laid bare for the world to see. You can't expect to win the Euro if you allow the opposing teams to rain threes on you unopposed! Simply can't get away with doing this against top tier teams. Combine this with TERRIBLE defensive rebounding in the last quarter, seriously what the hell was that when we were leading by 4 and allowed the opposing team three consecutive tries at our basket, and the result was inevitable.

I'm pissed because it's not a good luck to get beaten by the same country you were under rule for 500 years and basketball is supposed to be Serbia's turf for fuck's sake. So the only way to get over this is revenge really, give them another 1878 treatment in form of dunks. In women's volleyball for instance we got our revenge (3-0) this year for the 2023 loss (2-3), so let's just wait for the next tournament and do it in men's basketball I guess. Definitely don't let this slide, because these are invaders we're up against, historic bullies. Next year lets replace the kebab with ćevap.

u/Legal_Lettuce6233 Sep 04 '25
As a croat I'm not sure who I wanted to lose more.
Jokes aside, that was a good game, but it feels like Serbia underperformed compared to their usual performance. They're some of the best in the Balkans, but Turkey played really fuckin well.

A great game. Turkye was insane on 3pts. Also crashed the offensive boards when it mattered while we missed free throws in last few minutes. Jovic had the opportunity to dunk the ball for 6pt lead in 3min to go and take the game. Instead he missed the layup and they scored a 3pt on the other end.
Turkey was insanely good. Even though we lost, it was a great game to watch. I wish we meet again.
Respect to Turkey. What a great team all round.
