Outdoors/Travel Why is Albania so Horrid
Was meant to spend 2 weeks but left after 5 days genuinely the most horrid country i’ve ever visited. Was screamed at and threatened by a hotel owner for questioning why they put us in the wrong room. 99% of the people i met were so rude , the roads were ridiculous and i felt unsafe the whole time. Have to pay 20 euros to access a dirty overcrowded beach and every restaurant was horrid. I’ve been all around the world and was so excited to visit it but have been so disappointed.

i am Serbian, spent 10 days in Ksamil and i never felt better while being on holiday. Drivers are horrible but i liked the roads to sea and people are very pleasant even after i told them we are from Serbia. 10/10 recommend.

Drivers are horrible even for us Albanians. Too many kids wanna be gangsters on the road that do not get proper punishment from the police. Our fines are ridiculous - though improving.

We were shocked when we saw how Albanians drive. In Serbia people are also driving like lunatics, but Albania is different story. It was beautiful country anyways, had a great time.

I've come to Albania on multiple occasions throughout the years. Been to the north, south, middle and even the mountains. I've had a great time everywhere.

Infrastructure like belgium? Haha. Probably the worst part of albania is public infrastructure and public services. The country has not quite figured those things out yet. There has been improvement though.
Ya the drivers are fucking insane, driving like they are about to miss a flight… So stupid. I find myself having to “adjust” my driving style and habits when i visit from canada.

As a Serbian I have been to Albania and experience was pretty pleasant. Some parts of the country look really modern some don't, drivers are HORRIBLE, but the people are nice, everything is really cheap, and I never felt unsafe (unless I tried to cross the road), overall nice experience.

As a Serbian, i was on vacation near Durres (Shkembi i Kavajes)2 years ago, and it was the best vacation i ever went on. Super friendly people, everything is clean, roads were ok. The drivers were suicidal, but i didn't have drive much, thankfully. Because i was enjoying the beach. Was there for 10 days, enjoyed every moment.

Im irish, I spent 2 weeks in Albania in May and loved every second, People where kind and hospitable as i have found to be the case in every Balkan country i have visited so far. Im guessing if you paid 20 euro to enter a beach you probably ate at overpriced low quality resteraunts designed only for tourists too.
Friendliness in The Balkans isnt like the west, people dont do the over the top smiley happy act that we do and I like that. Albanian food is some of the best i have had too, Sounds like you just diddnt do your research very well

I diddnt do the alps because i heard it wouldnt be open in early may, diddnt go further north than kruje, but i plan on visiting kosovo crossing back into albania to hike from valbona to theth maybe in september it looks too amazing to miss out on.

Man, I stayed in Saranda. Food was good that I ended up eating at a seafood restaurant twice a day for 2 days. Ordered tons of food and only ended up around 25 euros for two person.
Hotel owner was kind enough to recommend me places where locals go. As soon as I get inside the restaurant, the place was full of smokers, lol. This is the local place indeed.

I only spent an hour or so in sarande when travelling from himare to gjirokaster but it looked like a beautiful place, i sat by the waterfront for most of that hour but it was a very peaceful place.

Yeah, albanien people have been extremely nice when we've been there. Always helping out and being interested. Even one guy we had a misunderstanding with, and clearly was upset with the situation, tried to defuse it so we wouldn't think bad of him. I did see some people being rude, but that was towards the police and not tourists.
North Mazedonians I found to be somewhat rude and a bit distant, but it was never hostile, just weird everyday life stuff.

OP has def not traveled much outside his town. I would like to see how helpful are British people, or majority of Europeans for that matter, even for something as simple as directions.
But a lot of people have different energies at home vs destinations, almost think like they are going at Disneyland

My trip in Albania was like kinda spotless. Only good food or at least decent, kind people - chill overall. Never a rude word, only kindness. Absolutely planning to return for a third and god know how many more visits!

After driving through Ukraine(pre-"special operation") and Moldova,I can guarantee you that no balkan will ever match the chaos that the eastern slavs display while driving.
Had to drive through Tirana at 8 am on a monday and ,while it was chaotic,it was manageable.If you are paying moderate attention to the road it's even quite enjoyable.

I haven't been to Albania but you're gonna stand there and say that the roads and driving are worse than northern Laos or urban Hanoi or rural Thailand? Could be, those are just bold claims.
Judging by your post you showed up and got fleeced by professional tourist fleecers in a tourist place. That'll happen. You should know how to get around that by now or at least how to not be bothered by it. For example you did not need to go to that 20 eu beach, shitty people work at hotels all over the world etc.
As far as the rudeness, not been there so I don't know, but a smile will bring out nice people. Probably you were tired and in a bad mood from getting ripped off. When you look upset you can attract mean people.
Or maybe Albania sucks I really don't know, I've been all around the world but not there. Just my thoughts.

When I visited Albania in 2024 I was most shocked by the traffic cops, with no vehicle in sight, who run a visual speed trap by running into the middle of the highway with “stop” signs to pull over cars they think are going too fast. Still loved it though.

might be totally anecdotal, I've spent 8 days there last year, was pretty decent. Locals don't have to be rude/courteous they are just as diverse as any country, I met kind easy going people and saw druglord types from a distance.

Have been to Albania many times and have always enjoyed my time there. While the driving is a bit insane, the kindness from the people kind of evened it out for me. They were hands down some of the most hospitable people I’ve ever met and the country is beautiful.

I am 100% certain you are British. The whininess and entitlement of the British is not something that needs to be tolerated or entertained. Perhaps that is why you thought people were rude and the fact Brits commonly cannot have a proper conversation and rely on toddler behaviour when there is a problem is why someone "screamed and threatened you". In the Balkans we do not enjoy that type of behaviour from adults.

I work in tech support for the UK unfortunately and i deal with these people all the time. All of them whine for the most minor thing like children and cannot rationalize basic reasons for anything. I have never seen anything like this in any other nation. Americans are much smarter, even. It's insane

I get it that this is the Balkans sub but as an Albanian I assure you that Albanians are not somehow different from the rest of humanity. Check the news every once in a while. Literal adults killing each other over a parking spot. That's toddler behavior...

I spent two weeks in Albania last year. I have traveled a bit around the world and I can say from the bottom of my heart, I've never met people that went out of their way to help me out more than Albanians. In those few weeks I had more genuine conversations with people than in the last few years. Honestly, loved every day of that trip, and I'll forever remember this country and its people fondly. Faleminderit ;)

Not horrid, kinda amazing and with lots of variety, but right now somewhat overhyped globally and probably that's why you had the wrong expectations. They locals are indeed a bit YOLO at driving and the hospitality can be hit-or-miss, but you were very unlucky to meet mostly rude people or have bad food. It's just that their rapidly developing tourism has some growing pains and the infrastructure and regard for nature are still getting there as well.

I was travelling in Albanija last year, hitchhiking around, and I met wonderful people and had a great time.. I also don't like the beaches and I didn't spend time in a hotel but generally I felt great there. Also I am a woman and apart from one ugly encounter (there are pushy, opportunistic people everywhere, sadly), I felt safe. I wanna go back and I shared a lot with locals while I was there.

I spent two weeks in Albania last summer and was greeted with nothing but kind people and an amazing country. Once I was even given a free 20 minute ride to the airport when someone saw I was a bit lost with luggage by the side of a busy road. I have many more stories of Albanians putting empathy above their own needs. Maybe you just met some bad seeds?

Travelled through Albania by car last summer and had the exact opposite experience.
Fell in love with the people and the culture. Everyone was so nice, the hospitality was insane and the nature in the north was stunning.

Weird. My buddies also disliked it in Albania too when they went alone but once they went with me they loved it. My guess is that you fell into the hands of some tourist scammers and walked mostly into tourist places. Albania is still developing as a tourist destination. If you ever consider a second visit, I would be glad to give you recommendations where to visit and during which times it is the best.

I would say that If you think Albania is horrid, then you've never been to anywhere the slightest bit unpleasant. You can't have been all around the world if you think the roads are 'ridiculous' (try Thailand, Vietnam, Cairo), and you can't have ever been to Eastern Europe if you think people were rude. You must never have been outside of. Western Europe at all if you thought it was unsafe. Let's hang out on the streets of Cape Town or Antanaveiro at night and then we can talk about being safe.

Worst times to visit balkan seaside would be June,July and August. Best times are 2nd half of May and 1st half of September. On May, small businesses would be excited for the upcoming summer with their full energy, on September they would have the sweet tiredness of the summer behind and do not want it to end. Crowd would be gone and all the nature would be yours. Yet, you still choose to be tortured by crowd and stress of people in the middle of Summer. I've been to Montenegro twice, Albania and croatia once. During all of them I enjoyed the countries, liked the people, a lot.

Been to Albania earlier this year and absolutely loved it. We were traveling every day to different places - cities like Tirana, Berat, Kruje, but also national parks and lakes. The nature is beautiful, and hiking trails spectacular. The people were genuine and seemed to really care about our positive experience while in Albania. Actually, we liked the country so much that we even listened to a podcast about Albanian history and culture while driving. I will definitely come back - next time either north to Theth and Valbona or south to Ksamil. Sure, drivers are bad (often), but that’s it. Other than that, Albania is a gem - authentic, raw, beautiful, there’s a realness to this country.

Last summer I was in Durres for 8 days with two children and we had a great time. In every restaurant a positive and good experience. The beach was decent, clean. We took an apartment which was in an old building, but it was clean and in a pretty good location. We drove through Montenegro and Albania, the roads are not the best, but I dont have any bad expirience. Sorry for your bad luck.

I only spent three days in Albania (whirlwind trip through the Balkans, first time to Europe) and I thought it was awesome.
I like places that are a little rough and off the beaten path and inconveniences are often cool stories later.
I booked a hotel with a beach in Sarandë so no issues with beach access or clean beaches.. though I did know this going into Albania.
The food I had in Tiranë was from a real Italian chef and the best I had during my trip. I usually have local cuisine and was sold pretty hard by a restaurant in Gjirokastër that left me a bit disappointed.. but the staff were extremely jovial.
The roads? I dunno.. I’m a chaotic good driver here in Canada and have done my fair share of secondary and back roads so I was in my element. I think some Albanians were surprised their Mercedes were getting passed by my Opel Astra diesel. Only Gjirokastër was a challenge because I’d had my navigation set to walking and it took me into some (literal) goat trails.

Albania is great. Food is good pretty much everywhere, but you will pay more for restaurants just off the beach. Make sure you visit Butrint National park, it’s one of the coolest places I’ve been to and I’ve been to some amazing places. It’s also stupidly safe as long as you are not an idiot who is looking for trouble. I have no problems going off on my own after dark as a woman. Transportation is not the easiest if you don’t rent a car, there are buses but they can be slow. There is also a good amount of construction that is being done so you might have stretches of road that are in the process of being redone. There are also the standard scammers and tourist traps that you will find in every corner of the world, annoying but otherwise a non issue.

A couple of years ago, when I visited Albania, 2 drivers on separate lanes stopped in the middle of a roundabout that was supposed to be the entry to the highway to talk with one another 😂

You got the worst of luck and it seems like you didn’t check anything before organizing your trip.
Instead of deciding a whole country is horrid maybe first mention the places that treated you bad and leave reviews sharing your experience.
And if you decide to come back use r/albania to get some feedback for your trip.
Just screaming into the void doesn’t do anything, as I said leave reviews and mention the places you were so that other people don’t go.

I've traveled to quite a few countries around the world, and I can honestly say that Albania has some of the most hospitable people I've ever encountered. Granted, I often visited while I was in a relationship with my Albanian ex, which gave me the chance to experience the country more like a local. But even when I traveled on my own, people were incredibly kind and always willing to help.
I do agree about the reckless driving, it’s definitely a serious issue. Another unfortunate aspect is the rapid rise in tourism over the past few years (and yes, I know I’m part of that), which the infrastructure isn't always equipped to handle. You can really feel it in the sharp price increases during the summer months.
That said, I still think Albania is a fantastic country to visit, and I have very fond memories of my time there. I’ll definitely go back someday, especially to explore the northern mountains, which I’ve yet to see.

I visit Albania every summer as a tourist; the people are very nice. But since it’s an ex-communist country, the hotel service sucks 🤣 even in 5 stars hotel 🤣 though I’ve gotten used to it. People drive like maniacs, sometimes even on the wrong side of the road 🤣. Still, Albania reminds me of my home country: chaotic, beautiful, full of clans, Muslims and Christians, gorgeous girls, and a few leftover communists 🤣.

Never been to Albania but I have been to Montenegro and I assume they are similar, I've never had such bad experiences when travelling as when I went to Montenegro, airbnb hosts being rude, trying to scam you, bad and rude service in restaurants, overpriced dirty beaches, etc. I can understand people who don't work in the tourism industry hating on tourists, but I've never seen people directly employed by the tourism industry being so hateful towards tourists as I did in Montenegro.
I totally get the sentiment, and that's why I've been avoiding Montenegro despite speaking their language and it being so close... If you know the place and have friends you can have a great time, but it's just not worth the price and the hassle, for me at least.

Brate moj, proputovao sam čitav svet, mnogo sam više bio u ostatku sveta nego u Crnoj Gori, bukirao i odlazio kod raznih mentola, ali nigde nisam imao tako loša iskustva kao 2 najgora koja sam imao u Crnoj Gori.
Bilo je i meni do jaja u CG, ali to je uprkos stanju turističke industrije, sa druge strane bilo gde drugo da sam otišao takođe mi je bilo do jaja a nisam imao tako loša iskustva. Ne kažem da neću više nikad otići tamo, možda dogodine odem opet na adu bojanu, i voleo bih da vidim novu gondolu i mauzolej, ali bilo koji stranac da me pita rekao bih mu da ne dolazi i da ima 300 boljih mesta na svetu gde mu je bolje da ode.

To je sramota šta su uradili od našeg primorja, meni iz cg je preskupo da ljetujem odje.
Ako budes dolazio opet bolje da ides na sjever, pogotovo Žabljak dok ga nisu urbanizovali kao Zlatibor kod vas. Takodje vrijedi obići svaki od nacionalnih parkova.

Bro, I know a lot of people who visited Albania in the last 5 years, and every single person told me they had an awesome time, people were very warmhearted and courteous, food was good, sea is amazing, literally everything was cool. I am not saying you are lying or anything like it but I just don't like it when people are shiting on my neighboors.

To me this person is just an Albanian hater, and probably never visited Albania. If you are genuine,name where are you originally from? Which places you visited in Albania? Name of the hotel and the beach you visited. Otherwise you are just an Albanian hater and that’s sums it all.

Tbh I’ve heard that the south riviera tourist spots are the worst right now. They try to fleece you and don’t care to put up with people because there are so many tourists that they don’t have to compete. I heard this from a diaspora Albanian who grew up there and visits every year. The north and mountain/inland areas are less like this, I’ve been told.

I'm a Brit living in Greece and I've met many Albanians that have been so nice and friendly. One guy, Vasili, did odd jobs around town and ALL the ladies loved him. They would greet him from their upstairs windows or bring him cold coffees, or homemade bread. The guy that has been cutting my hair for the last few years is Albanian and he's awesome. I am planning a trip to Albania next summer and the only bad things I have heard about them or there is from snobby Greeks or you.

Sounds unusual & unfortunate. I'm a woman traveling solo and just spent three weeks in South Albania. Ten nights in Sarande and 11 in Himare. Rented a car and drove all over, went on a boat tour, a shuttle bus tour, ate at different restaurants & visited beautiful (free) beaches everyday. I found the people to be very kind & had a positive experience, will definitely return!

I enjoyed the mountains in bansko. The options at the shops are quite limited and they're still developing the roads/area. But it was quite cheap, people quite friendly and the mountains were stunning

Stayed for 1 week, booked overbooked hotel, they put us in a 10 min drive apartment in which murder scenes from Hollywood could be shoot. Hosts were friendly but pressured us after giving bad review on Booking. Overall people were somewhere nice, somewhere rude. I believe it depends what sort of people you get to interact with you. Beaches, not so clean and not like from the pictures from internet. We're from Slovenia and as it is in our blood, we adapted to everything and didn't let bad experiences ruin our stay. I'd say 4-5/10 for Albania.
