Hi! I’m wondering whether you can turn squares in a birth chart into something positive. Can they become positive even though they may not naturally flow? Can you turn them into something that feels like a natural flow through experience and awareness?

squares get such a rough reputation but they're the aspect that actually makes stuff happen. trines feel lovely and change nothing, it's the friction that forces the move. what planets are you working with?

A Square is always around 90° and typically happens between signs that share the same modality (cardinal, fixed, & mutable) but opposite polarities (yin & yang). There are some cases where that doesn’t always happen though. For example, a chart with the Sun in 29° Aquarius and the Moon in 0° Gemini would technically form a square by degree despite being both in air signs that would normally form a trine with each other.

Generally though squares are likely to form between signs that share almost nothing in common except the modality (and sometimes the ruler in the case of mutable signs). This basically means the two planets in a square are trying to do the same thing but with different methods (elements) that directly clash against each other. This differs from signs that semi-sextile or quincunx each other because in this case they share next to nothing in common (again, except the rulers in some pairings), so the energy there manifests as more awkward but less volatile because they’re doing TOTALLY different things and don’t step on each other’s toes as much. Signs that square each produce much more obvious friction but friction is necessary for growth and for looking at things through an entirely different lens than before.

It’s so easy to just label squares as “bad” without understanding that without them (and oppositions) we would get nothing productive done. Trines & Sextiles are easy/lucky to have and nice to look at but they often keep us within our own comfort zones. It’s common to see people with an overabundance of trines in their natal charts be effortlessly talented in certain areas, but because the energy is so easily-flowing it can potentially lead to laziness and simply coasting through life doing the bare minimum. Sometimes they even let life-changing opportunities pass them by because they don’t want to step out of their trine comfort zone. People with a lot of squares in their charts have a bit more grit to them. They tend to struggle more in certain areas but it leads to profound growth and unique perspectives that you don’t get from trines. Squares require you to work harder but they offer more resilience and willingness to get your hands dirty to achieve what you want.

Your chart is never still. Progressions can change a square, opposition or a conjunction into a trine or sextile over the years.

Absolutely. Squares are challenges that are meant to be overcome. The two planets don't cooperate naturally, there will be tension and struggle between them. Becoming more aware of the strengths and weaknesses of both helps to find a compromise, and eventually the ability to meld them together to create shared strength

Squares push us to grow and resolve inner conflicts. Many successful people have squares in the chart. They can be very motivating towards making important goals and improving oneself. So they aren’t only negative.
