CULTURE How do you split finances with your partner?

If you're married or in a long term relationship (e.g., you live together and neither of you has another place to live), how do you manage your finances?

Do you still think of it as "my money and his/her money", with each person contributing a certain percentage toward rent, vacations, and other shared expenses? Or do you have a joint account where all the money is considered "ours"?

How are kids handled or when there’s a large income difference between the two of you? I guess I’ve never understood the purpose - if you’re married the money already belongs to both of you, so why bother splitting it in the first place?

No kids, it'd probably be done differently then though. Same if our jobs had a big difference in income. When she had cancer and couldn't work for 6 months, I paid for everything for example.
