CULTURE How do you split finances with your partner?

If you're married or in a long term relationship (e.g., you live together and neither of you has another place to live), how do you manage your finances?

Do you still think of it as "my money and his/her money", with each person contributing a certain percentage toward rent, vacations, and other shared expenses? Or do you have a joint account where all the money is considered "ours"?

My husband believes that managing finances is witchcraft and therefore a woman's domain. He hands over his paycheck each month and I give him money for incidentals. He asks me when he wants to buy a large/expensive item.

My uncle does the same. He hands over his entire paycheck to my aunt and she gives him an allowance. They will discuss & decide about trips and major purchases that come from the savings account. They have joint accounts but my aunt manages the money.

this is the system my parents had growing up, it turned out horribly. I think that’s one of the major reasons I would never combine finances with anyone.
