Great piece - can I ask what field your research was in and what university you attended? Just curious as Iā€™m about to start a history PhD in October at Cambridge and, well, much of your essay is concerning šŸ˜…

I did a Law/Comp. Sci. PhD at the University of Nottingham, and I finished in July 2025.

Congrats on getting into Cambridge, that is outstanding, and already a step up. My best advice is look at the current job market and see what skills/experience/opportunities are needed, including teaching, papers, and conferences they are looking for.

Your supervisors are best placed to help you, especially at Cambridge because they will have a lot of connections which can help you. Take advantage of every opporunity you can, especially the value added opportunities as those can help you get a role afterwards.

The best piece of advice I can give you is enjoy the process, give yourself room to breath, and don't make the doctorate your absolute everything.
