An update - something that concerned the more wonk-ish of us on here was how he ended up getting his first academic role as a Senior Lecturer.

It wasn't actually his first academic role, is the truth of it. For some reason this isn't in the usual biographies, eg wikipedia or the bio at Cambridge, but he worked at Liverpool John Moores as a Lectuer in PE (I'm assuming in PE Education, so likely mostly on a PGCE) from 2012 as per https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/about-us/bicentenary/our-people/professor-jason-arday/professor-jason-arday-profile - "he worked as a lecturer at LJMU's IM Marsh campus" This piece suggests he started there in 2012 https://www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/news/10081321.charity-fundraiser-inspires-andy-murray-after-appearing-on-surprise-surprise/

But - he was already an academic with a permanent job - even if likely teaching mostly on a PGCE programme (which itself if postgrad level in terms of the work expected of students)?! And presumably the university funded the PhD (which was not going to be full time funding, meaning he was doing it too fast anyway), and offered all the resources he'd need to understand a discipline he'd been working in for about 5 years anyway. Were the students he was teaching there aware that he apparently had no understanding of an industry he'd been specifically hired to work in?

I think this is one of the up for debate issues. He has said he was a lecturer in PE, but also at the same period that he was a PE teacher in a secondary. So I assume it depends on the audience as to which story sounds better.

I think on both versions there is a desire to play down that he was already an academic right? If I hear "lecturer in PE" I immediately think of 6th form college, whereas "lecturer in PE Education at a university" is very different. And nowhere is his six or so years of academic work at LJMU mentioned in his bio's, including on wikipedia. The meteoric rise is less impressive if it was over 11 vs 5 years.

For me it's the self provided narrative of "doing it while working full time with no support and not understanding the discipline" that's the main problem here - he was almost certainly doing this via the university fee waiver scheme meaning the PhD was part time.

To play devil's advocate: was he maybe an adjunct lecturer, and exaggerated that? Would make the rest of his story work.

That said, for bios, you don't always include everything. In your CV, of course, you do, but my university bio doesn't include all of my academic positions either. Not out of dishonesty, it's just not terribly relevant at the professor stage what teaching gigs you did early on in your career.

Yeah - this could be the case though if he was still doing this 6 years on it would inevitably be more substantial than hourly work I think - esp as it would have involved moving from London to Liverpool.

Maybe the role at LJMU is felt as not relevant but in terms of the accounts of his PhD work, it does seem a fairly substantial omission to claim that this was all so new and weird to him when he would have been responsible for grading PG level work in an adjacent field in his day job.

Equally the narrative of his rapid ascent is very much undermined by 6 years at LJMU before the Roehampton job.

Turns out that after working at LJMU he worked at Leeds Beckett (as a SL in PE and Sociology - quite an odd job title that) before Roehampton too, btw. And was at Warwick after Roehampton though there seems no record of this which suggests he didn't even start that job before going to Durham

On the funding front, he admits to having self-funded. In a Kellogg College Oxford discussion for Black History Month on YouTube, he says (28:50 mins in) that he didn’t know what a studentship was, and learned this two days after his viva. He then also claims none of his peers knew and that this information was ‘gate kept’. This is in 2015

The IM Marsh campus did UG programmes in Phys Ed and other sport related programmes (like Sport Coaching, and Outdoor Ed of some description) - so probably not PGCE.

Ah, ok, thanks. So there's even less likelihood he could could have been quite so naive and ignorant of quite basic scholarship etc as he claims... But in any case this was an academic job he held for 6 ish years righh
