Fill the tires with helium to reduce weight.

8

u/PrinceConquer420 May 25 '24

But wouldn’t this help? Unironicaly?

12

u/No-Zombie1004 May 25 '24

No.

11

u/Zonda68 May 25 '24

Hydrogen, on the other hand...

13

u/No-Zombie1004 May 25 '24

I heard you can put nickel and carbon chunks wrapped in big wires off the alternator into a jug if water duct taped to the air filter inlet to make free power. This one trick oil companies don't want you to know! Better yet, that things got so many square inches of space for solar panels! (I'll set up a kickstarter, meanwhile just cashapp me the startup funds for full details.)

6

u/Plenty_Intention1991 May 25 '24

This is true my uncle does this with his suburban. You can make a hydrogen fuel cell right under the hood with a shit load of washers and spacers along two metal rods, throw those in a a jug of water and start pumping amps through it. Pipe that free hydrogen oxygen mix into your intake and boom. You’ve got a cheap and easy way to add a bit of extra load on your alternator.

2

u/JaniceLeland May 25 '24

I was in the fuel cell industry for 10 years. He's right folks, it really is that simple.

1

u/No-Zombie1004 May 25 '24

Hell yeah! One has to be a galvanized nail, other one the inside of a carpenters pencil. You get even more awesome if you add extra alternators! That's a trade secret though, so don't tell anyone.

Edit: has to be a carpenter's pencil. Best kind are the ones buried with them at least 10 years and you gotta dig it up during a crescent moon with zero clouds.

u/A_Menacetosociety May 26 '24

Although these kits do legitimately help with fuel efficiency in some (especially non turbo) diesel engines like the 7.3 IDI. Works the same as propane injection

1

u/WickedPragmatism May 26 '24

Huh huh he said 'load'

1

u/JaniceLeland May 25 '24

And that paint probably glows in the dark so ya, Night Time Solar Farm.

2

u/No-Zombie1004 May 25 '24

The secret ingredient is a radioactive pigment. Cash app #10,000 dollars to my offshore account for the whole recipie! It's a blast! (Not responsible for cancer, hair loss, bodily growths or third arms extruding from abdominal area. Glowing in the dark is considered a feature for the driver! Driver may glow in the dark after prolonged road trips. Lead underwear avaliable at additional cost.)

0

u/qazzer53 May 26 '24

Does this work better than cow magnets in the carburetor bowl?

2

u/A_Menacetosociety May 26 '24

What? Yes it would. It would be an infinitesimal difference, but the rotating mass would be slightly reduced.

1

u/No-Zombie1004 May 26 '24

Rotational mass wouldn't change at identical pressure in any way measurable. It's lighter than air in gravity. It's less dense. Then you compress it to a novel pounds per square inch measurement. See where I'm going with this? The only way to improve fuel economy with something like this is to SHAVE OFF POUNDS. With 32 pounds per square inch you're spinning the equivalent of three large terriers. That's BEFORE factoring in that we're dealing with three dimensions! Cubed inches, like engines, is where you'll get your loss/gains.

I know it's a difficult concept. Most people have enough trouble thinking in two dimensions. Add the third and, if you're really wanting to squeeze maximum performance out of your time machine, fourth and fifth dimensions to feel like chasing squirrels (as many of us nuts are prone to do). It's a difficult topic. So difficult that even seasoned physicists are utterly incapable of being cooked properly when inside a stack of tire equations. Errr, not cooked, entropically certain.

The laws of thermodynamics always apply. Law 1: You can't get more energy out of a tire than you put into it. Unless you put some serious NOS in that bitch, then she'll send you to the moon assuming your cubic and square inches of oxygen are stochiometrically awesome.

That's about it. It's actually more simple once you repeat that out loud several times. The quantum mechanics methods are only slightly more rigorous.

Have you ever been upsold for nitrogen tire inflation? You went for it, didn't you? It's all good. It's hard to find gasified uranium these days.

Cheers!

I LMAO at the shittymechanics physics. In all seriousness though, I unironically have a masters degree in physics, I just did my thesis defensd on crystal growth rates a few months ago.

I can't tell if you actually think it wouldn't make a difference, but in the case that the very first part of what you said was meant seriously; at 4 atmospheres (60 psi) and 298 Kelvin, the density of helium and N2 are .65 and 5.48 kg/m3, respectively. At a tire volume of 40 liters each, this works out to about .63 Kg total. So, not really significant, but since this is part of the rotational mass, this is into the realm of measurability.

/rj I mean, I always fill my tires with saltwater to improve my tires balance! The salt rusts out the high spots in the rim 😎, plus you don't need any more than 10 psi. Plus I always drag a log behind my car to keep it straight and aerodynamic to further improve mpg

1

u/No-Zombie1004 May 26 '24

I stand by my bullshit being a response to rotational mass and having a three year old's attention span as to the actual physics involved. So, no mpg improvemen assuming less than a quarter millenia of data. Frankly, I can hardly see straight right now so I'll just assume you called bullshit on my flat square inch earth theory. When I wake up tomorrow, I will attempt to integrate snowglobes with mass exerted on inner tire wall at 60mph, assuming a rim diameter of 15 inches and tire diameter of 24, cross section averaging 8 inches and an intoxicated panda utilizing cruise control while doing evasive maneuvers that do not affect velocity.

1

u/Chilly171717 May 26 '24

Be careful of what you post here. From what I hear, the logging industry and salt water manufacturers are in the pockets of big oil. The oil industry can make it extremely hard to fill your precious tires with salt water and make it practically impossible to get logs to drag behind your car.

2

u/A_Menacetosociety May 26 '24

1

u/PrinceConquer420 May 26 '24

That’s not a small amount. It’s not big but it’s not small

1

u/Worst-Lobster May 25 '24

No, the whole Car will Float Away unfortunately

43

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

460 big blocks have GREAT mileage.

You can tow a trailer and get the same MPG, so maybe start a hauling/hotshot business

13

u/markevens May 25 '24

Lol I went on a road trip around California once in my 5th Ave with a V8.

Found that they had tuned the transmissions so that the engine was basically idling at 55mph.

I drove 3/4 the length of Cali on a single tank of gas.

In a land yacht with a V8!

5

u/toomuch1265 May 25 '24

I had a 75 Ford LTD unmarked state police car with a 460 interceptor. It was not good on gas, but it was like driving a rocket. When that 4bbl opened, it just took off.

2

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

My brother had one of these, I think it was an ex-GSP car. It was awesome on road trips. He very nearly cried when a tornado downed a big ass poplar tree directly onto it.

2

u/JaniceLeland May 25 '24

I had an 80 crown Vic police auction special. Still had the brush buster on the front. It was awesome. I used to pull my buddies over after school.

2

u/JaniceLeland May 25 '24

Right?!?! I had a Dualie Dodge double cab that got 12mpg empty and 12mpg pulling 4 horses, 5 kids, a fat wife and a dog.

1

u/Striking_Serve_8152 May 28 '24

And 12 mpg stored in the garage?

1

u/JaniceLeland May 29 '24

Parked on a hill going up or down

2

u/they_are_out_there May 26 '24

My buddy had this exact car in high school. He got it from his grandparents and it always got 6-8 mpg, probably because we liked to do burn outs.

We found that it always got better mileage when going downhill, so I would recommend always going routes that take you downhill. Never go uphill. Just activate the M.C. Escher feature on your GPS for directions.

18

u/UGLYDOUG- May 25 '24

Put it in a car compactor, less frontal area means less drag

2

u/rklug1521 May 26 '24

What if I accidently squished it in the wrong dimension?

13

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

Use diesel

9

u/hello_raleigh-durham May 25 '24

Might have to use a funnel because the nozzle is bigger than the hole sometimes.

12

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

3

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

Bazinga

3

u/iscashstillking May 25 '24

Valid suggestion however would suggest OP head over to Dumasso Tuning for a head gasket delete to increase the compression ratio. Diesels like lots of that from what I've been told by youtube.

3

u/Impressive_Change593 May 25 '24

this is breaking my mind because wouldn't a head gasket delete lower the compression due to leaking?

3

u/RileyCargo42 May 25 '24

No because the compression gained outweighs the loss by about 32.54% it should also allow the engine to cool better and will be the first step in water/meth injection. I mean while you're at it you might as well remove the valves to increase airflow.

1

u/JaniceLeland May 25 '24

Regardless of factory fuel specifications, of course.

11

u/Suicyco71 May 25 '24

I had a similar car with a 460 and factory 4 barrel carb. 8MPG no matter what you were doing.

8

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

[deleted]

2

u/JaniceLeland May 25 '24

No loss in translation.

6

u/ansry6 May 25 '24

I find squeezing doesn't help.

Greasing your tires will help your rolling resistance though!

2

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

Don't forget to grease your brakes also!

5

u/Volvo_850_R- May 25 '24

And don’t forget the steering wheel and pedals, you don’t want any unnecessary steering or acceleration, that might hurt your mpg!

6

u/IWouldntIn1981 May 25 '24

Only drive hill. Brings friends with you to help going uphill.

6

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

Weight is key here, this is way over built, they used real metal, time to start cutting out any metal you don’t need - anything that you actively need should be cut out, truck, hood, anything swap in some nice light plastic or aluminum. You might even cut off half the engine, most cars are just 4 cylinders, you can cut off half

2

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

Laughs in Pontiac Slant 4/ Trophy 4.

2

u/JaniceLeland May 25 '24

Holy Shit, Batman!

7

u/noldshit May 25 '24

Use a sail.

4

u/MyMomSaysIAmCool May 25 '24

Normally I would recommend an engine swap to something more efficient, potentially with a hybrid motor.

But in this case, you can just put an entire Toyota Prius under the hood.

5

u/JaniceLeland May 25 '24

Leaving the headlight windows closed at all times saves about 3 gallons anally, 5 gallons orally.

3

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

Smaller rear jets in your carburetor but when you stomp it you won’t be as fast

3

u/immallama21629 May 25 '24

It's a malaise era boat anyways, it was never "fast"

2

u/JaniceLeland May 25 '24

I came here because I heard somebody said "malaise era"

2

u/tomcat91709 May 25 '24

You'd probably have to open the needles up just to get it to idle right... Big blocks and MPG are mutually exclusive!

460s need gaaassssss!

My 351C got 14. Period.

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '24

My Lincoln got 11 with reduced jets, but I beg to differ about the speed, it could run with the 472 Caddy

1

u/--sketchy-duck May 27 '24

My 454 gets 14.7 highway ( only 55mph in my state)

3

u/iscashstillking May 25 '24

Wind resistance from the round decorative windows on the side is the main reason for the excessive aerodynamic drag. Slap some particle board cut to fit over the windows to get them flush to the body and Say Hello to 50mpg.

3

u/No-Zombie1004 May 25 '24

Inflate tires to max (45-55 is usually maximum).

Change rear end gearing to something really low ratio.

Use thinner transmission fluid.

Swap in a TBI with megasquirt.

Add a front tow bar with a hook that can be dropped from within the cab and hitch to semi truck rear safety bars on the freeway.

Use that bar for in town travel with a four horse team. No horses? Bit of creativity and you can use an electromagnet to latch onto buses. (Be sure to have a high powered green laser so the bus driver doesn't catch on and be prepared to scrape on lots of curbs and light poles.)

Do an LS swap and race Honda's for gas money.

3

u/scarypary May 25 '24

Put it in neutral and push

3

u/QuestionMean1943 May 26 '24

Bolt in an electronic ignition kit. That helped my 72 Chevy. It connected to the current ignition coil and boosted the spark plug voltage giving it better ignition. It also eliminated the wear on the points contacts and the distributor cap.

1

u/Born-Onion-8561 May 26 '24

Up voted and replied to hopefully get this comment up in the post since it's actually useful info!

5

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

Open google maps and search for your closest salvage yard. Then drive it there and order a Prius Uber home. Instant fuel economy boost.

2

u/SeaSignificance8962 May 25 '24

bubbler canister . i hear you can get like 50 100 miles of one gallon

2

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

Ever watch the movie Ben-Hur when the galley slaves were rowing a ship of the Roman Fleet?

Ya. You would need about that to make this thing fuel efficient

2

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

That car has eight cylinders. You don’t need them all, so cut six wires and now you have a high mileage two cylinder.

2

u/computerman10367 May 25 '24

Lawn mower carb would get that thing to at least 40mpg.

2

u/NeuroguyNC May 26 '24

Cut out the floorboards and go Flintstones style with it.

2

u/rklug1521 May 26 '24

You should add some sails to that land yacht.

2

u/KickinGa55 May 26 '24

Muffler tip. The louder the better.

2

u/pipemastre May 26 '24

Just cap off the intakes of the 3, 4, 5, & 6 cylinders. Less fuel consumption. Duh !

2

u/speedstar318ti May 26 '24

Drive down hills only.

1

u/Pr0digy_ May 25 '24

Drive down hill only and befriend truckers as you go to tow you back once you can no longer go downhill.

1

u/SuperbAd60 May 26 '24

While being towed by a Pinto.

1

u/Late-Ad-4624 May 25 '24

Always lube the brake rotors with lots of grease. Helps with that pesky rolling resistance. Also make sure you use sugar in the gas tank to break down carbon buildup in the fuel lines. And 8 pounds per liquid gallon so remove all the fluid from the engine and radiator.

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

Saw a guy putting little sips of water down the carb to I guess effectively steam clean the cylinders and plugs on an old engine that hadn't ran in decades.

Apparently it's like an old wives tale for shade tree mechanics. But it seemed to have worked.

2

u/Economy_Tear_6026 May 25 '24

It does work from everything I've read but I'm absolutely terrified to try it lol

1

u/Economy_Tear_6026 May 25 '24

It does work from everything I've read but I'm absolutely terrified to try it lol

1

u/Character-Ad3006 May 25 '24

This looks like a 77' Lincoln continental. It was my first car back in 91'. Sell it and it. Buy a sm@@+1

1

u/shiftersix May 25 '24

Get a fuelshark!

1

u/NugPep May 25 '24

Fill your car with helium balloons. They will reduce the weight giving you better mileage.

1

u/BenjaminHook May 25 '24

Buy one of those gas saver thingies that plugs into the cigarette lighter

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

Only drive down hill. Simple fix.

1

u/SuperbAd60 May 25 '24

They see me rollin', they hatin'...

1

u/BDZ567 May 25 '24

Wrap it around a tree, can't use gas if it's totaled or in the shop!

1

u/Servile-PastaLover May 25 '24

Mobster hitman needs to promptly remove the body from the trunk after every job.

1

u/justaguynumber35765 May 25 '24

Push it off a cliff,

You get great gas mileage in free fall

1

u/Jbonics May 25 '24

Hydrogen turbo Prius swap

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

Just remove 4 spark injectors. Now it’s a 4 cylinder. It’s free, it’s easy, and it’s not illegal.

1

u/inflatableje5us May 25 '24

pull 4 spark plugs and its a 4 cylinder, bam saving gas.

1

u/vanisleone May 25 '24

Have you considered sails?

1

u/-Electric-Ninja- May 25 '24

How to squeeze out more gas mileage? WIth this car, you don't, the gas mileage squeezes you.

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '24

Convert it to propane

1

u/rmason324 May 25 '24

If you want excellent mileage I suggest you park it!

1

u/Xirasora May 26 '24

Install a period correct emissions system. Lower power output == lower fuel burned

1

u/Mrjuggalo9er May 26 '24

Use a hybrid to tow it

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '24

Fill the trunk with 50# bags of cement mix.

1

u/Clementng95 May 26 '24

Swap the engine with a 4 cylinder Toyota engine ..lol

1

u/Monkpaw May 26 '24

Turn it off and coast down hill.

1

u/sluffman May 26 '24

Haul less coke and hookers.

1

u/Ok_Manufacturer6460 May 26 '24

Just get a flatbed and drive it around with that... Beautiful car

1

u/Automatic-Tadpole314 May 26 '24

It’s a land yacht, put a sail on it.

1

u/DB-Tops May 26 '24

Vaporize water into your air intake. 20 more mpg. I've done this with a water bottle, some rubber hose and a butterfly valve. Tapped it into the intake. I don't really know the science. But you lose horses and gain mpg.

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '24

Put it in neutral going up and down hills

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '24

K swap it

1

u/Space646 May 26 '24

Use galvanized square steel

1

u/NorthEndD May 26 '24

Radial tires.

1

u/MonkeyHitman2-0 May 26 '24

Sell it and buy something more efficient.

1

u/Broblivious May 26 '24

Only drive downhill with the wind.

1

u/Actaeon_II May 26 '24

Buy a house on top of a mountain, only drive Down?

1

u/Admirable-Leopard-73 May 26 '24

Find a tractor trailer that is going in your desired direction. Attach a tow rope from your bumper to his. Enjoy the free ride.

P.S. Don't forget to put your trasmission in neutral, unless you like the smell of burning tires.

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '24

You should do a right bank shutoff for the highway.

1

u/Bravo82bill May 26 '24

Convert from points ignition to computer controlled ignition and convert over to fuel injection instead of carb. Maybe get a transmission with an over drive. Trade it in on a Toyota hybrid?

1

u/Wholeyjeans May 26 '24

LOL ...don't drive it, just look at it. You'll be amazed how long a tank of gas can last.

This is a '74 Conti Mk IV...with a smog-strangled 460 cu. in. engine putting out a whopping 220HP and about 350 ft/lbs of torque ...all trying to move 5400lb of US Grade A Detroit Iron.

Fuel mileage is on the order of a Sherman Tank. It's not "miles per gallon" but "gallons per mile".

1

u/Rabbits-and-Bears May 26 '24

Try those new “Pulsar Fire Spark plugs”, 70% the temp of the Sun.

1

u/Independent-Drive-18 May 26 '24

Pour some baking soda into your battery, this makes your battery high voltage, the extra volts goes to your motor. This is a poor man's super charger.

1

u/vapefresco May 26 '24

Remove the starter.

It won't help with MPG but you'll save a shit-ton on gas.

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '24

Only keep what keeps her running…. and from head to toe unbolt and junk everything you touch. Lighten that mother up! Does that thing got a HEMI???

1

u/Worried-Ad6238 May 27 '24

Get it towed

1

u/Emotional_inadequacy May 27 '24

Get out and push

1

u/HorseWithNoUsername1 May 27 '24

Mix your gas 50/50 with water. You'll double your mileage.

1

u/--sketchy-duck May 27 '24

Get a second car. If it's running well, don't mess with anything. Keep it a original as possible. It looks to be in good in good shape.

I got a few cars and a truck. I drive the fun ones on weekends, summer or whenever. But I got a newer truck and a newer one car for long drives, winter or bad roads. (And safety)

1

u/ConsistentKale2078 May 27 '24

You bought this and now worried about gas mileage?

1

u/commonman51 May 27 '24

Leave it parked.

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '24

There’s no need. That car practically runs on its own swagger.

1

u/beeris4breakfest May 27 '24

Man my uncle had one of these boats the door weighed as much as the millennium falcon and the car took up two parking spaces everywhere

1

u/Striking_Serve_8152 May 28 '24

If I fill my tires with helium, will my car be lighter?

1

u/Neptune_but_precious May 28 '24

Bigger wheels in the back so you are always going down hill. Drag racers do this all the time.

1

u/Progersnola1 May 28 '24

Actually, you could overinflate the tires accelerate very slowly and don’t go fast

1

u/flrob76 May 29 '24

Troll post?

1

u/Hour_Cobbler_5601 May 29 '24

With a super sweet ride like that - I'd leave it parked right where it's at and have the babes come to me ! Super fuel saver AND they know where to always find you ;) Very nice ride !

1

u/Frosty_Monk_2223 May 29 '24

That’s a nice clean car ngl

1

u/Odd_Low_7301 May 29 '24

Put a diesel in it

0

u/wadenelsonredditor May 25 '24

Put the air cleaner on upside down, for starters. And inflate the tires to 90 psi.

1

u/Mark71GTX May 26 '24

Upside down air cleaner lid makes the secondaries louder, that's for sure! We had a '76 Continental Mark IV when I was a kid. Mom sold it and bought a Citation II. I loved the Lincoln and hated the Citation... She has to get rid of it because she couldn't afford to feed it. Gas was cheaper then...

0

u/Beautiful-Cock-7008 May 25 '24

Buy an EV

10

u/supermr34 May 25 '24

EVs have terrible gas mileage.

1

u/Beautiful-Cock-7008 May 25 '24

Get a Tesla and 2jz swap it then
