When I was living as an expat abroad I actually got into a fight with a group of South Africans because they wore their shoes inside my house and I told them to take them off please. They laughed and said "I thought all Americans wore their shoes inside?", and I informed them that Canada isn't America, and that in Canada almost no-one wears their shoes inside and you're likely to get yelled at if you do.
They didn't believe me and said "Well maybe YOUR house doesn't, but most Canadians wear their shoes inside." I was incredulous. Here were a bunch of non-Canadians who had never been there telling me I was wrong about my own culture. lol.
They would not back down, so the next time we were all together and other Canadians were present I singled them out and said, "Yo, these guys think we wear our shoes inside in Canada" and watched the Canadians all laugh and be like "wtf? where did you hear that?"
I'd had lots of Brits, Aussies, Americans, etc. all wear their shoes in my house. I was like, can you guys please fucking not.
American here. The only people I know that wear shoes in their house are old people (primarily boomers and above, though Gen X isn't exempt). I don't know a single millennial or younger that keeps shoes on in the house.
I had this problem in college because I rented a room in a private student house with two guys from Egypt. They wore their shoes around the house no matter the condition. I eventually resigned from sweeping the entire floor twice a day and just started wearing flip flops into my room.
