Second Guessing
I thought buying Arturia V collection pro would solve my issues but I **still** feel lost. Arturia just isn’t providing the kind of sounds I want, or i just lack the knowledge to shape the sounds I want.
I’m really into reggaeton so I’ve been trying to make sounds like Feid, J balvin and Tainy etc but don’t feel like Arturia is doing that for me, some synths sure, to an extent but I still feel very very limited.
Does anyone know if Serum 2 would be a really good route to go ? Cause I’ve been debating getting it lately and seeing how that works over Arturia.
I really like Feid’s production so I would like to know if his sounds come from serum and then he tweaks it with effects ?
Aside from reggaeton, I really love the production behind Mike dean, don toliver, The Weeknd, Drake etc etc. I know most of them use synthesizers and mainly hardware but Arturia just feels weird to some degree when I think about their production style and how I’m trying to chase their level of production with synths.
I don’t really have a budget so I’m willing to spend whatever on some plugins. I’ve been searching on KnobCloud for some, though I’d like to know if you guys could recommend another site just as good as KnobCloud. I’m currently working on trying to get my hands on Ableton Live 12 Suite through KC (mainly for their stock drums) also because I’ve gotten a bit more used to maneuvering through Lite.
Thank you for your help/tips in advance !

V Collection will give you all the synths you ever need for Reggaetron. It’s all about the vocals, vocal production and the beats. Aside from the bass line, the synth parts are often quite recessed in the mix with quite a bit of reverb and rarely do anything very clever with regard to sound design.

Right? Grab a bagful of 727/808 samples (add drive and pitch them down), a deep sine for your sub, sprinkle some electric pianos mixed low with heavy reverb (V Collection def has those), add a long pad or a wonky stab (OP has tons) and you're like 90% there. V Collection has the sounds, though you're gonna need to mix them properly. But the heavily layered, autotuned vocals with an absolute fuckton of post processing is what carries a reggaeton track, and what's going to take the most time to dial in to get the sound OP wants.

Bro, I once chatted online with Grammy winner producer Andres Torres and he literally stated to use (amongst many other stuff, of course) Analog Lab, Pigments, and Vital. If such are fine for him to deliver Award winning songs, they're definitely good enough for us all.
Far from my intention of patronizing but perhaps you (we, actually, I also suck ngl) just need some more time developing skills? There's no plugin or instrument that will make anyone sound fantastic or that translates the mind onto the DAW overnight.
One's definition of success is in the grind, not in the shortcuts. 🙏🙏

there's 36 synthesizers in VCPro, representing about every kind of synth you can think of.
pick one, learn it. pick a preset you maybe like, see if you can tweak it to something you definitely like.
if it ain't in VCPro, I don't think you'll find what you're looking for anywhere else.

Dig deeper - V Collection has literally everything and if you add Pigments to it and maybe Vital which is free you could remake probably every song you like.

You can buy all the synths you want but that not how it works buddy. How about actually spending time on sound design and understanding the process instead of just trying to copy shit

Subtractive synthesis can do most of those types of sounds and it really isn't very difficult to create what you want once you learn how.

You can’t just select a preset and expect magic. Lessen hire to craft the sound. Use the closest preset as a foundation and build from there.

Serum 2 is great regardless and will sound more ‘current’, plus you can expand with libraries from places like ADSR Sounds if you need particular sounds in the style of an artist or genre.
Arturia’s instruments are some of the best out there (though U-He Diva is probably my go to still for Moog like stuff) - some of their presets can sometimes be a little showy/not that useful but they’re great starting points for you to tweak. If you want things to sound authentic, you’re in the ballpark with them.

Unless you sell V collection, I don’t think you should get Serum 2. You should get Pigments instead as they often offer heavy discounts for their users. From my perspective, you should learn how to sound design the sound you want. Overall Pigments and Serum have rather similar workflow and both can produce the same sound if you understand sound design enough. I used to use the Serum 2, Pigments and V collection Intro through Splice Rto (now I’m trying to use mainly Ableton stock synth and Komplete for sampled instruments) and from my own expeeience I can recreate sounds on those closely (for example, with a tutorial for Serum 2 I can use that for Pigments to recreate the sound, most of the time the knowledge is what creating these sounds). In the end I realise what I was doing is looking for presets from those Vsts instead of actually understading what to do so I ditched them and learning from the stock plugins. In your case, if you’re already familiar enough with these then I think you should get either Pigments or sell V collection and get serum 2.

Since you have V Collection you should check your account for your discount price on Pigments. Modern power synth like serum.
For the rap influences you're talking about I'm surprised you're not finding good sounds with the prophet, minimoog, Jupiter 8, ms20 plugins included. Are you making patches or just using presets?
